Gauge-fixed Lattice QCD and the dispersion relation of Wilson fermions

We show that, when investigating Wilson-fermions correlation functions on the lattice, one is bound to encounter major difficulties in defining their dispersion relation, even at tree level. The problem is indeed quite general and, although we stumbled upon it while studying Coulomb-gauge applications, it also affects gauge fixed studies in covariant gauges, including their most popular version, Landau gauge. In this paper we will discuss a solution to this problems based on a redefinition of the kinematic momentum of the fermion.

Coulomb vs. physical string tension on the lattice

From continuum studies it is known that the Coulomb string tension $σ_C$ gives an upper bound for the physical (Wilson) string tension $σ_W$ [D. Zwanziger, Phys. Rev. Lett. 90, 102001 (2003)]. How does however such relationship translate to the lattice? In this paper we give evidence that there, while the two string tensions are related at zero temperature, they decouple at finite temperature. More precisely, we show that on the lattice the Coulomb gauge confinement scenario is always tied to the spatial string tension, which is known to survive the deconfinement phase transition and to cause screening effects in the quark-gluon plasma. Our analysis is based on the identification and elimination of center vortices which allows to control the physical string tension and study its effect on the Coulomb gauge observables. We also show how alternative definitions of the Coulomb potential may sense the deconfinement transition; however a true static Coulomb gauge order parameter for the phase transition is still elusive on the lattice.

Lattice Coulomb propagators, effective energy and confinement

We show that in the lattice Hamiltonian limit all Coulomb gauge propagators are consistent with the Gribov-Zwanziger confinement mechanism, with an IR enhanced effective energy for quarks and gluons and a diverging ghost form factor compatible with a dual-superconducting vacuum. Multiplicative renormalizability is ensured for all static correlators, while for non-static ones their energy dependence plays a crucial role in this respect. Moreover, from the Coulomb potential we can extract the Coulomb string tension σ_C ~ 2 σ.

Ghost propagator and the Coulomb form factor from the lattice

We calculate the Coulomb ghost propagator G(|p|) and the static Coulomb potential V_C(|r|) for SU(2) Yang-Mills theory on the lattice. In view of possible scaling violations related to deviations from the Hamiltonian limit we use anisotropic lattices to improve the temporal resolution. We find that the ghost propagator is infrared enhanced with an exponent kappa_gh ~ 0.5 while the Coulomb potential exhibits a string tension larger than the Wilson string tension, sigma_C ~ 2 sigma. This agrees with the Coulomb "scaling" scenario derived from the Gribov-Zwanziger confinement mechanism.

Running mass, effective energy and confinement: the lattice quark propagator in Coulomb gauge

We calculate the lattice quark propagator in Coulomb gauge both from dynamical and quenched configurations. We show that in the continuum limit both the static and full quark propagator are multiplicatively renormalizable. From the propagator we extract the quark renormalization function Z(|p|) and the running mass M(|p|) and extrapolate the latter to the chiral limit. We find that M(|p|) practically coincides with the corresponding Landau gauge function for small momenta. The computation of M(|p|) can be however made more efficient in Coulomb gauge; this can lead to a better determination of the chiral mass and the quark anomalous dimension. Moreover from the structure of the full propagator we can read off an expression for the dispersion relation of quarks, compatible with an IR divergent effective energy. If confirmed on larger volumes this finding would allow to extend the Gribov-Zwanziger confinement mechanism to the fermionic sector of QCD.

Hamiltonian approach to Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge - revisited

I briefly review results obtained within the variational Hamiltonian approach to Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge and confront them with recent lattice data. The variational approach is extended to non-Gaussian wave functionals including three- and four-gluon kernels in the exponential of the vacuum wave functional and used to calculate the three-gluon vertex. A new functional renormalization group flow equation for Hamiltonian Yang--Mills theory in Coulomb gauge is solved for the gluon and ghost propagator under the assumption of ghost dominance. The results are compared to those obtained in the variational approach.

BRST symmetry vs. Horizon condition in Yang-Mills theories

We show that in SU(2) Yang-Mills theories a simple relation exists between lattice gluon propagators in Coulomb and Landau gauge and discuss the physical implications of such result. In particular, the realization of the Gribov-Zwanziger confinement mechanism in Coulomb gauge, linked to dual-superconductivity, would imply that the standard BRST charge must be ill defined non perturbatively. As a consequence, the Kugo-Ojima confinement criterion, which relies on BRST charge conservation beyond perturbation theory, would not be fulfilled.

The role of center vortices in Gribov's confinement scenario

The connection of Gribov's confinement scenario in Coulomb gauge with the center vortex picture of confinement is investigated. For this purpose we assume a vacuum wave functional which models the infrared properties of the theory and in particular shows strict confinement, i.e. an area law of the Wilson loop. We isolate the center vortex content of this wave functional by standard lattice methods and investigate their contributions to various static propagators of the Hamilton approach to Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge. We find that the infrared properties of these quantities, in particular the infrared divergence of the ghost form factor, are dominated by center vortices.

Hamiltonian approach to Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge

I review results recently obtained within the Hamiltonian approach to Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge. In particular, I will present results for the ghost and gluon propagators and compare these with recent lattice data. Furthermore, I will give an interpretation of the inverse of the ghost form factor as the dielectric function of the Yang-Mills vacuum. Our ansatz for the vacuum wave functional will be checked by means of functional renormalization group flow equations, which are solved for the gluon energy and the ghost form factor. Finally, we calculate the Wilson loop for the vacuum wave functional obtained from the variational approach, using a Dyson equation.

Improved Landau gauge fixing and the suppression of finite-volume effects of the lattice gluon propagator

For the gluon propagator of pure SU(2) lattice gauge theory in the Landau gauge we investigate the effect of Gribov copies and finite-volume effects. Concerning gauge fixing, we enlarge the accessible gauge orbits by adding non-periodic Z(2) gauge transformations and systematically employ the simulated annealing algorithm. Strategies to keep all Z(2) sectors under control within reasonable CPU time are discussed. We demonstrate that the finite-volume effects in the infrared regime become ameliorated. Reaching a physical volume of about (6.5 fm)^4, we find that the propagator, calculated with the indicated improvements, becomes flat in the region of smallest momenta. First signs in 4d of a final decrease towards vanishing momentum are discussed.

Fixed twist dynamics of SO(3) gauge theory

We perform a throughout study of 3+1 dim. SO(3) LGT for any fixed-twist background. We concentrate in particular on the physically significant trivial and 1-twist sectors. Introducing a Z(2) monopole chemical potential the 1st order bulk transition is moved down in the strong coupling region and weakened to 2nd order in the 4-dim Ising model universality class. In this extended phase diagram we gain access to a confined phase in every fixed twist sector of the theory. The Pisa disorder operator is employed together with the Polyakov loop to study the confinement-deconfinement transition in each sector. Due to the specific properties of both operators, most results can be used to gain insight in the ergodic theory, where all twist sectors should be summed upon. An explicit mapping of each fixed twist theory to effective positive plaquette models with fixed twisted boundary conditions is applied to better establish their properties in the different phases.

Vortex free energy and deconfinement in center-blind discretizations of Yang-Mills theories

Maximal 't Hooft loops are studied in SO(3) lattice gauge theory at finite temperature T. Tunneling barriers among twist sectors causing loss of ergodicity for local update algorithms are overcome through parallel tempering, enabling us to measure the vortex free energy F and to identify a deconfinement transition at some $β_A^{crit}$. The behavior of F below $β_A^{crit}$ shows however striking differences with what is expected from discretizations in the fundamental representation.

Finite temperature phase transition, adjoint Polyakov loop and topology in SU(2) LGT

We investigate the phase structure of pure SU(2) LGT at finite temperature in the mixed fundamental and adjoint representation modified with a Z2 monopole chemical potential. The decoupling of the finite temperature phase transition from unphysical zero temperature bulk phase transitions is analyzed with special emphasis on the continuum limit. The possible relation of the adjoint Polyakov loop to an order parameter for the finite temperature phase transition and to the topological structure of the theory is discussed.

Lattice calculation of $1/p^2$ corrections to $α_s$ and of $Λ_{\rm {QCD}}$ in the $\widetilde{MOM}$ scheme

We report on very strong evidence of the occurrence of power terms in $\as(p)$, the QCD running coupling constant in the $\widetilde{MOM}$ scheme, by analyzing non-perturbative measurements from the lattice three-gluon vertex between 2.0 and 10.0 GeV at zero flavor. While putting forward the caveat that this definition of the coupling is a gauge dependent one, the general relevance of such an occurrence is discussed. We fit $Λ_{\bar{\rm MS}}^{(n_f=0)}= 237 \pm 3 ^{+ 0}_{-10}$ MeV in perfect agreement with the result obtained by the ALPHA group with a totally different method. The power correction to $\as(p)$ is fitted to $(0.63\pm 0.03 ^{+ 0.0}_{- 0.13}) {\rm GeV}^2/p^2$.

Hamiltonian LGT in the complete Fourier analysis basis

The main problem in the Hamiltonian formulation of Lattice Gauge Theories is the determination of an appropriate basis avoiding the over-completeness arising from Mandelstam relations. We short-cut this problem using Harmonic analysis on Lie-Groups and intertwining operators formalism to explicitly construct a basis of the Hilbert space. Our analysis is based only on properties of the tensor category of Lie-Group representations. The Hamiltonian of such theories is calculated yielding a sparse matrix whose spectrum and eigenstates could be exactly derived as functions of the coupling $g^2$
