Landau level spectroscopy of Bi$_2$Te$_3$

Here we report on Landau level spectroscopy in magnetic fields up to 34 T performed on a thin film of topological insulator Bi$_2$Te$_3$ epitaxially grown on a BaF$_2$ substrate. The observed response is consistent with the picture of a direct-gap semiconductor in which charge carriers closely resemble massive Dirac particles. The fundamental band gap reaches $E_g=(175\pm 5)$~meV at low temperatures and it is not located on the trigonal axis, thus displaying either six or twelvefold valley degeneracy. Notably, our magneto-optical data do not indicate any band inversion. This suggests that the fundamental band gap is relatively distant from the $Γ$ point where profound inversion exists andgives rise to relativistic-like surface states of Bi$_2$Te$_3$.

Large magnetic gap at the Dirac point in a Mn-induced Bi$_2$Te$_3$ heterostructure

Magnetically doped topological insulators enable the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) which provides quantized edge states for lossless charge transport applications. The edge states are hosted by a magnetic energy gap at the Dirac point but all attempts to observe it directly have been unsuccessful. The gap size is considered crucial to overcoming the present limitations of the QAHE, which so far occurs only at temperatures one to two orders of magnitude below its principle limit set by the ferromagnetic Curie temperature $T_C$. Here, we use low temperature photoelectron spectroscopy to unambiguously reveal the magnetic gap of Mn-doped Bi$_2$Te$_3$ films, which is present only below $T_C$. Surprisingly, the gap turns out to be $\sim$90 meV wide, which not only exceeds $k_BT$ at room temperature but is also 5 times larger than predicted by density functional theory. By an exhaustive multiscale structure characterization we show that this enhancement is due to a remarkable structure modification induced by Mn doping. Instead of a disordered impurity system, it forms an alternating sequence of septuple and quintuple layer blocks, where Mn is predominantly incorporated in the septuple layers. This self-organized heterostructure substantially enhances the wave-function overlap and the size of the magnetic gap at the Dirac point, as recently predicted. Mn-doped Bi$_2$Se$_3$ forms a similar heterostructure, however, only a large, nonmagnetic gap is formed. We explain both differences based on the higher spin-orbit interaction in Bi$_2$Te$_3$ with the most important consequence of a magnetic anisotropy perpendicular to the films, whereas for Bi$_2$Se$_3$ the spin-orbit interaction it is too weak to overcome the dipole-dipole interaction. Our findings provide crucial insights for pushing the lossless transport properties of topological insulators towards room-temperature applications.

Massive and massless Dirac fermions in Pb1-xSnxTe topological crystalline insulator probed by magneto-optical absorption

Dirac fermions in condensed matter physics hold great promise for novel fundamental physics, quantum devices and data storage applications. IV-VI semiconductors, in the inverted regime, have been recently shown to exhibit massless topological surface Dirac fermions protected by crystalline symmetry, as well as massive bulk Dirac fermions. Under a strong magnetic field (B), both surface and bulk states are quantized into Landau levels that disperse as B^1/2, and are thus difficult to distinguish. In this work, magneto-optical absorption is used to probe the Landau levels of high mobility Bi-doped Pb0.54Sn0.46Te topological crystalline insulator (111)-oriented films. The high mobility achieved in these thin film structures allows us to probe and distinguish the Landau levels of both surface and bulk Dirac fermions and extract valuable quantitative information about their physical properties. This work paves the way for future magnetooptical and electronic transport experiments aimed at manipulating the band topology of such materials.

Nonmagnetic band gap at the Dirac point of the magnetic topological insulator (Bi$_{1-x}$Mn$_x)_2$Se$_3$

Magnetic doping is expected to open a band gap at the Dirac point of topological insulators by breaking time-reversal symmetry and to enable novel topological phases. Epitaxial (Bi$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$)$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ is a prototypical magnetic topological insulator with a pronounced surface band gap of $\sim100$ meV. We show that this gap is neither due to ferromagnetic order in the bulk or at the surface nor to the local magnetic moment of the Mn, making the system unsuitable for realizing the novel phases. We further show that Mn doping does not affect the inverted bulk band gap and the system remains topologically nontrivial. We suggest that strong resonant scattering processes cause the gap at the Dirac point and support this by the observation of in-gap states using resonant photoemission. Our findings establish a novel mechanism for gap opening in topological surface states which challenges the currently known conditions for topological protection.

Observation of the rare $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ decay from the combined analysis of CMS and LHCb data

A joint measurement is presented of the branching fractions $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ and $B^0\toμ^+μ^-$ in proton-proton collisions at the LHC by the CMS and LHCb experiments. The data samples were collected in 2011 at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, and in 2012 at 8 TeV. The combined analysis produces the first observation of the $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ decay, with a statistical significance exceeding six standard deviations, and the best measurement of its branching fraction so far. Furthermore, evidence for the $B^0\toμ^+μ^-$ decay is obtained with a statistical significance of three standard deviations. The branching fraction measurements are statistically compatible with SM predictions and impose stringent constraints on several theories beyond the SM.

Effective potentials between gold nano crystals -- functional dependence on the temperature

A method is presented that allows to combine the effective potential between two nano crystals, the potential of mean force (PMF), as obtained from all-atomistic Molecular Dynamics simulations with perturbation theory. In this way, a functional dependence of the PMF on temperature is derived, that enables the prediction of the PMF in a wide temperature range. We applied the method for systems of capped gold nano crystals of different size. They show very good agreement with data from atomistic simulations.

Measurement of the Mass Difference Between Top and Anti-top Quarks at CDF

We present a measurement of the mass difference between top ($t$) and anti-top ($\bar{t}$) quarks using $t\bar{t}$ candidate events reconstructed in the final state with one lepton and multiple jets. We use the full data set of Tevatron $\sqrt{s} = 1.96$ TeV proton-antiproton collisions recorded by the CDF II detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.7 fb$^{-1}$. We estimate event-by-event the mass difference to construct templates for top-quark signal events and background events. The resulting mass difference distribution of data compared to signal and background templates using a likelihood fit yields $ΔM_{top} = {M}_{t} - {M}_{\bar{t}} = -1.95 $pm$ 1.11 (stat) $pm$ 0.59 (syst)$ and is in agreement with the standard model prediction of no mass difference.

On Irreversibility and Radiation in Classical Electrodynamics of Point Particles

The direct interaction theory of electromagnetism, also known as Wheeler-Feynman electrodynamics, is often misinterpreted and found unappealing because of its reference to the absorber and, more importantly, to the so-called absorber condition. Here we remark that the absorber condition is indeed questionable and presumably not relevant for the explanation of irreversible radiation phenomena in our universe. What is relevant and deserves further scrutiny is the emergent effective description of a test particle in an environment. We therefore rephrase what we consider the relevant calculation by Wheeler and Feynman and comment on the status of the theory.

Photoemission of Bi$_2$Se$_3$ with Circularly Polarized Light: Probe of Spin Polarization or Means for Spin Manipulation?

Topological insulators are characterized by Dirac cone surface states with electron spins aligned in the surface plane and perpendicular to their momenta. Recent theoretical and experimental work implied that this specific spin texture should enable control of photoelectron spins by circularly polarized light. However, these reports questioned the so far accepted interpretation of spin-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. We solve this puzzle and show that vacuum ultraviolet photons (50-70 eV) with linear or circular polarization probe indeed the initial state spin texture of Bi$_2$Se$_3$ while circularly polarized 6 eV low energy photons flip the electron spins out of plane and reverse their spin polarization. Our photoemission calculations, considering the interplay between the varying probing depth, dipole selection rules and spin-dependent scattering effects involving initial and final states explain these findings, and reveal proper conditions for light-induced spin manipulation. This paves the way for future applications of topological insulators in opto-spintronic devices.

Absence of nonlocal resistance in microstructures of PbTe quantum wells

We report on experiments allowing to set an upper limit on the magnitude of the spin Hall effect and the conductance by edge channels in quantum wells of PbTe embedded between PbEuTe barriers. We reexamine previous data obtained for epitaxial microstructures of n-type PbSe and PbTe, in which pronounced nonlocal effects and reproducible magnetoresistance oscillations were found. Here we show that these effects are brought about by a quasi-periodic network of threading dislocations adjacent to the BaF$_2$ substrate, which give rise to a p-type interfacial layer and an associated parasitic parallel conductance. We then present results of transport measurements on microstructures of modulation doped PbTe/(Pb,Eu)Te:Bi heterostructures for which the influence of parasitic parallel conductance is minimized, and for which quantum Hall transport had been observed, on similar samples, previously. These structures are of H-shaped geometry and they are patterned of 12 nm thick strained PbTe quantum wells embedded between Pb$_{0.92}$Eu$_{0.08}$Te barriers. The structures have different lateral sizes corresponding to both diffusive and ballistic electron transport in non-equivalent L valleys. For these structures no nonlocal resistance is detected confirming that PbTe is a trivial insulator. The magnitude of spin Hall angle gamma is estimated to be smaller than 0.02 for PbTe/PbEuTe microstructures in the diffusive regime.

An inclusive search for the Higgs boson in the four-lepton final state at CDF

An inclusive search for the standard model Higgs boson using the four-lepton final state in proton-antiproton collisions produced by the Tevatron at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV is conducted. The data are recorded by the CDF II detector and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 9.7 /fb. Three distinct Higgs decay modes, namely ZZ, WW, and tau-tau, are simultaneously probed. Nine potential signal events are selected and found to be consistent with the background expectation. We set a 95% credibility limit on the production cross section times the branching ratio and subsequent decay to the four lepton final state for hypothetical Higgs boson masses between 120 GeV/c^2 and 300 GeV/c^2.

Excitation intensity dependence of photoluminescence spectra of SiGe quantum dots grown on prepatterned Si substrates: Evidence for biexcitonic transition

The pumping intensity (I) dependence of the photoluminescence (PL) spectra of perfectly laterally two-dimensionally ordered SiGe quantum dots on Si(001) substrates was studied. The PL results from recombinations of holes localized in the SiGe quantum dots and electrons localized due to the strain field in the surrounding Si matrix. The analysis of the spectra revealed several distinct bands, attributed to phonon-assisted recombination and no-phonon recombination of the excitonic ground state and of the excited excitonic states, which all exhibit a linear I dependence of the PL intensity. At approximately I>3W/cm^2, additional bands with a nearly quadratic I dependence appear in the PL spectra, resulting from biexcitonic transitions. These emerging PL contributions shift the composite no-phonon PL band of the SiGe quantum dots to higher energies. The experimentally obtained energies of the no-phonon transitions are in good agreement with the exciton and biexciton energies calculated using the envelope function approximation and the configuration interaction method.

Precision Top-Quark Mass Measurements at CDF

We present a precision measurement of the top-quark mass using the full sample of Tevatron $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV proton-antiproton collisions collected by the CDF II detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.7 $fb^{-1}$. Using a sample of $t\bar{t}$ candidate events decaying into the lepton+jets channel, we obtain distributions of the top-quark masses and the invariant mass of two jets from the $W$ boson decays from data. We then compare these distributions to templates derived from signal and background samples to extract the top-quark mass and the energy scale of the calorimeter jets with {\it in situ} calibration. The likelihood fit of the templates from signal and background events to the data yields the single most-precise measurement of the top-quark mass, $\mtop = 172.85 $\pm$ 0.71 (stat) $\pm$ 0.85 (syst) GeV/c^{2}.$

Search for a low mass Standard Model Higgs boson in the tau-tau decay channel in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 1.96 TeV

We report on a search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying into pairs of tau leptons in $p\bar{p}$ collisions produced by the Tevatron at $\sqrt{s}$ = 1.96 TeV. The analyzed data sample was recorded by the CDFII detector and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 6.0 fb$^{-1}$. The search is performed in the final state with one tau decaying leptonically and the second one identified through its semi-hadronic decay.Since no significant excess is observed, a 95% credibility level upper limit on the production cross section times branching ratio to the tau-tau final state is set for hypothetical Higgs boson masses between 100 and 150 GeV/$c^2$. For a Higgs boson of 120 GeV/$c^2$ the observed (expected) limit is 14.6 (15.3) the predicted value.

Search for Standard Model Higgs Boson Production in Association with a W Boson Using a Matrix Element Technique at CDF in p-bar{p} Collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV

This paper presents a search for standard model Higgs boson production in association with a $W$ boson using events recorded by the CDF experiment in a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.6 fb-1. The search is performed using a matrix element technique in which the signal and background hypotheses are used to create a powerful discriminator. The discriminant output distributions for signal and background are fit to the observed events using a binned likelihood approach to search for the Higgs boson signal. We find no evidence for a Higgs boson, and 95% confidence level (C.L.) upper limits are set on the Higgs boson production rate. The observed limits range from 3.5 to 37.6 relative to the standard model expectation for Higgs boson masses between 100 and 150 GeV. The 95% C.L. expected limit is estimated from the median of an ensemble of simulated experiments and varies between 2.9 and 32.7 relative to the production rate predicted by the standard model over the Higgs boson mass range studied.

Search for the Higgs boson in the all-hadronic final state using the full CDF data set

This paper reports the result of a search for the standard model Higgs boson in events containing four reconstructed jets associated with quarks. For masses below 135GeV/c2, Higgs boson decays to bottom-antibottom quark pairs are dominant and result primarily in two hadronic jets. An additional two jets can be produced in the hadronic decay of a W or Z boson produced in association with the Higgs boson, or from the incoming quarks that produced the Higgs boson through the vector-boson fusion process. The search is performed using a sample of \sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV proton-antiproton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.45 fb-1 recorded by the CDF II detector. The data are in agreement with the background model and 95% credibility level upper limits on Higgs boson production are set as a function of the Higgs boson mass. The median expected (observed) limit for a 125GeV/c2 Higgs boson is 11.0 (9.0) times the predicted standard model rate.

Search for WZ+ZZ production with MET + jets with b enhancement at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV

Diboson production ($WW+WZ+ZZ$) has been observed at the Tevatron in hadronic decay modes dominated by the $WW$ process. This paper describes the measurement of the cross section of $WZ$ and $ZZ$ events in final states with large $\mett$ and using $b$-jet identification as a tool to suppress $WW$ contributions. Due to the limited energy resolution, we cannot distinguish between partially hadronic decays of $WZ$ and $ZZ$, and we measure the sum of these processes. The number of signal events is extracted using a simultaneous fit to the invariant mass distribution of the two jets for events with two $b$-jet candidates and events without two $b$-jet candidates. We measure a cross section $σ(p\bar{p}\to WZ,ZZ) = 5.8^{+3.6}_{-3.0}$ pb, in agreement with the standard model.

Maxwell-Lorentz Dynamics of Rigid Charges

We establish global existence and uniqueness of the dynamics of classical electromagnetism with extended, rigid charges and fields which need not to be square integrable. We consider also a modified theory of electromagnetism where no self-fields occur. That theory and our results are crucial for approaching the as yet unsolved problem of the general existence of dynamics of Wheeler Feynman electromagnetism, which we shall address in the follow up paper.

Measurement of branching ratio and Bs0 lifetime in the decay Bs0 -> J/psi f0(980) at CDF

We present a study of Bs0 decays to the CP-odd final state J/psi f0(980) with J/psi -> mu+ mu- and f0(980) -> pi+ pi-. Using ppbar collision data with an integrated luminosity of 3.8/fb collected by the CDF II detector at the Tevatron we measure a Bs0 lifetime of tau(Bs0 -> J/psi f0(980)) = 1.70 -0.11+0.12(stat) +-0.03(syst) ps. This is the first measurement of the Bs0 lifetime in a decay to a CP eigenstate and corresponds in the standard model to the lifetime of the heavy Bs0 eigenstate. We also measure the product of branching fractions of Bs0 -> J/psi f0(980) and f0(980) -> pi+ pi- relative to the product of branching fractions of Bs0 -> J/psi phi and phi -> K+ K- to be R_f0/phi = 0.257 +_0.020(stat) +-0.014(syst), which is the most precise determination of this quantity to date.

Measurement of the Top Pair Production Cross Section in the Lepton + Jets Channel Using a Jet Flavor Discriminant

We present a new method to measure the top quark pair production cross section and the background rates with 2.7 fb$^{-1}$ of data from $p\bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} =1.96$ TeV collected with the CDF II Detector. The size of the dataset was chosen to directly show the improvements of this new method. We select events with a single electron or muon, missing transverse energy, and at least one b-tagged jet. We perform a simultaneous fit to a jet flavor discriminant across nine samples defined by the number of jets and b-tags. We measure a top cross section of $σ_{t\bar{t}} = 7.64 \pm 0.57 \mathrm{(stat + syst)} \pm 0.45 \mathrm{(luminosity)}$ pb. An advantage of this approach is that many systematic uncertainties are measured in situ and inversely scale with integrated luminosity.

Measurement of the top-quark mass in the lepton+jets channel using a matrix element technique with the CDF II detector

A measurement of the top-quark mass is presented using Tevatron data from proton-antiproton collisions at center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV collected with the CDF II detector. Events are selected from a sample of candidates for production of $t\bar t$ pairs that decay into the lepton+jets channel. The top-quark mass is measured with an unbinned maximum likelihood method where the event probability density functions are calculated using signal and background matrix elements, as well as a set of parameterized jet-to-parton transfer functions. The likelihood function is maximized with respect to the top-quark mass, the signal fraction in the sample, and a correction to the jet energy scale (JES) calibration of the calorimeter jets. The simultaneous measurement of the JES correction ($\JES$) amounts to an additional \textit{in situ} jet energy calibration based on the known mass of the hadronically decaying $W$ boson. Using the data sample of 578 lepton+jets candidate events, corresponding to 3.2 $fb^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, the top-quark mass is measured to be $m_t = \rm 172.4 \pm 1.4\:(stat+\JES) \pm 1.3\:(syst) GeV/{\it c}^2$.

In this paper we present a precise measurement of the total ZZ production cross section in pp collisions at {\surd}s= 1.96 TeV, using data collected with the CDF II detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 6 fb-1. The result is obtained by combining separate measurements in the four-charged (lll'l'), and two-charged-lepton and two-neutral-lepton (llvv) decay modes of the Z. The combined measured cross section for pp {\to} ZZ is 1.64^(+0.44)_(-0.38) pb. This is the most precise measurement of the ZZ production cross section in 1.96 TeV pp collisions to date.

On the Existence of Dynamics of Wheeler-Feynman Electromagnetism

We study the equations of Wheeler-Feynman electrodynamics which is an action-at-a-distance theory about world-lines of charges that interact through their corresponding advanced and retarded Liénard-Wiechert field terms. The equations are non-linear, neutral, and involve time-like advanced as well as retarded arguments of unbounded delay. Using a reformulation in terms of Maxwell-Lorentz electrodynamics without self-interaction, which we have introduced in a preceding work, we are able to establish the existence of conditional solutions. These are solutions that solve the Wheeler-Feynman equations on any finite time interval with prescribed continuations outside of this interval. As a byproduct we also prove existence and uniqueness of solutions to the Synge equations on the time half-line for a given history of charge trajectories.

Search for a Heavy Top-Like Quark in p\bar{p} Collisions at {\surd}s = 1.96 TeV

We present the results of a search for pair production of a heavy top-like (t') quark decaying to Wq final states using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.6 fb-1 collected by the CDF II detector in pp collisions at {\surd}s = 1.96 TeV. We perform parallel searches for t' \to Wb and t' \to Wq (where q is a generic down-type quark) in events containing a lepton and four or more jets. By performing a fit to the two-dimensional distribution of total transverse energy versus reconstructed t quark mass, we set upper limits on the t \bar{t} production cross section and exclude a standard model fourth-generation t' quark decaying to W b (W q) with mass below 358 (340) GeV/c2 at 95% CL.

A search for a narrow Higgs boson resonance in the diphoton mass spectrum is presented based on data corresponding to 7.0 fb^-1 of integrated luminosity from p-pbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV collected by the CDF experiment. No evidence of such a resonance is observed, and upper limits are set on the cross section times branching ratio of the resonant state as a function of Higgs boson mass. Search for New Dielectron Resonances and Randall-Sundrum Gravitons at the Collider Detector at Fermilab

A search for new dielectron mass resonances using data recorded by the CDF II detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.7/fb is presented. No significant excess over the expected standard model prediction is observed. In this dataset, an event with the highest dielectron mass ever observed (960 GeV/c^2) was recorded. The results are interpreted in the Randall-Sundrum (RS) model. Search for Standard Model Higgs Boson Production in Association with a W Boson at CDF

We present a search for the standard model Higgs boson production in association with a $W$ boson in proton-antiproton collisions ($p\bar{p}\rightarrow W^\pm H \rightarrow \ellνb\bar{b}$) at a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV. The search employs data collected with the CDF II detector which correspond to an integrated luminosity of approximately 2.7 fb$^{-1}$. We recorded this data with two kinds of triggers. The first kind required high-p$_T$ charged leptons and the second required both missing transverse energy and jets. The search selects events consistent with a signature of a single lepton ($e^\pm/μ^\pm$), missing transverse energy, and two jets. Jets corresponding to bottom quarks are identified with a secondary vertex tagging method and a jet probability tagging method. Kinematic information is fed in an artificial neural network to improve discrimination between signal and background. The search finds that both the observed number of events and the neural network output distributions are consistent with the standard model background expectations, and sets 95% confidence level upper limits on the production cross section times branching ratio. The limits are expressed as a ratio to the standard model production rate. The limits range from 3.6 (4.3 expected) to 61.1 (43.2 expected) for Higgs masses from 100 to 150 GeV/$c^{2}$, respectively.

Contact superconductivity in In-PbTe junctions

The authors report on electron transport studies on superconductor-semiconductor hybrid structures of indium and n-type lead telluride, either in the form of quantum wells or bulk crystals. In-PbTe contacts form by spontaneous alloying, which occurs already at room temperature. The alloyed phase penetrates deeply into PbTe and forms metallic contacts even in the presence of depletion layers at the semiconductor surface. Although the detailed structure of this phase is unknown, we observe that it exhibits a superconducting transition at temperatures below 10 K. This causes such substantial reduction of the contact resistances that they even become comparable to those predicted for ideal superconductor-normal conductor contacts. Most importantly, this result indicates that the interface phase in the superconducting state becomes nearly homogeneous - in contrast to the structure expected for alloyed contacts. We suggest that the unusual interface superconductivity is linked to the unique properties of PbTe, namely, its huge static dielectric constant. Apparently the alloyed interface phase contains superconducting precipitates randomly distributed within the depletion layers, and their Coulomb charging energies are extremely small. According to the existing models of the granular superconductivity, even very weak Josephson coupling between the neighboring precipitates gives rise to the formation of a global superconducting phase which explains our observations.

Embedded magnetic phases in (Ga,Fe)N: the key role of growth temperature

The local chemistry, structure, and magnetism of (Ga,Fe)N nanocomposites grown by metal organic vapor phase epitaxy is studied by high resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction and absorption, transmission electron microscopy, and superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry as a function of the growth temperature $T_{\mathrm{g}}$. Three contributions to the magnetization are identified: i) paramagnetic -- originating from dilute and non-interacting Fe$^{3+}$ ions substitutional of Ga, and dominating in layers obtained at the lowest considered $T_{\mathrm{g}}$ (800$^{\circ}$C); ii) superparamagnetic-like -- brought about mainly by ferromagnetic nanocrystals of $ε-$Fe$_3$N but also by $γ'$-Fe$_4$N and by inclusions of elemental $α$- and $γ$-Fe, and prevalent in films obtained in the intermediate $T_{\mathrm{g}}$ range; iii) component linear in the magnetic field and associated with antiferromagnetic interactions -- found to originate from highly nitridated Fe$_x$N ($x \leq$ 2) phases, like $ζ$-Fe$_2$N, and detected in samples deposited at the highest employed temperature, $T_{\mathrm{g}}$ = 950$^{\circ}$C. Furthermore, depending on $T_{\mathrm{g}}$, the Fe-rich nanocrystals segregate towards the sample surface or occupy two-dimensional planes perpendicular to the growth direction.

Strain determination in the Si channel above a single SiGe island inside a field effect transistor using nanobeam x-ray diffraction

SiGe islands are used to induce tensile strain in the Si channel of Field Effect Transistors to achieve larger transconductance and higher current driveabilities. Studying the Underlying Event in Drell-Yan and High Transverse Momentum Jet Production at the Tevatron

We study the underlying event in proton-antiproton collisions by examining the behavior of charged particles (transverse momentum pT > 0.5 GeV/c, pseudorapidity |η| < 1) produced in association with large transverse momentum jets (~2.2 fb-1) or with Drell-Yan lepton-pairs (~2.7 fb-1) in the Z-boson mass region (70 < M(pair) < 110 GeV/c2) as measured by CDF at 1.96 TeV center-of-mass energy. We use the direction of the lepton-pair (in Drell-Yan production) or the leading jet (in high-pT jet production) in each event to define three regions of η-ϕspace; toward, away, and transverse, where ϕis the azimuthal scattering angle. For Drell-Yan production (excluding the leptons) both the toward and transverse regions are very sensitive to the underlying event. In high-pT jet production the transverse region is very sensitive to the underlying event and is separated into a MAX and MIN transverse region, which helps separate the hard component (initial and final-state radiation) from the beam-beam remnant and multiple parton interaction components of the scattering. The data are corrected to the particle level to remove detector effects and are then compared with several QCD Monte-Carlo models. The goal of this analysis is to provide data that can be used to test and improve the QCD Monte-Carlo models of the underlying event that are used to simulate hadron-hadron collisions.

Spin-induced optical second harmonic generation in the centrosymmetric magnetic semiconductors EuTe and EuSe

Spectroscopy of the centrosymmetric magnetic semiconductors EuTe and EuSe reveals spin-induced optical second harmonic generation (SHG) in the band gap vicinity at 2.1-2.4eV. The magnetic field and temperature dependence demonstrates that the SHG arises from the bulk of the materials due to a novel type of nonlinear optical susceptibility caused by the magnetic dipole contribution combined with spontaneous or induced magnetization. This spin-induced susceptibility opens access to a wide class of centrosymmetric systems by harmonics generation spectroscopy.

The X(3872) at the Tevatron

I report results on the X(3872) from the Tevatron. Mass and other properties have been studied, with a focus on new results on the dipion mass spectrum in X -> J/PsiPi^+Pi^- decays. Dipions favor interpreting the decay as J/PsiRho, implying even C-parity for the X. Modeling uncertainties do not allow distinguishing between S- and P-wave decays of the J/PsiRho mode. Effects of Rho-Omega interference in X decay are also introduced.

The X(3872) Meson and "Exotic" Spectroscopy at CDF II

A spate of remarkable new hadrons reported in 2003 may lead to unequivocal proof of states beyond conventional $q\bar{q}$ and $qqq$ structure. Claimed baryonic states Theta+, Phi, and Theta^0_c would consist of five quarks, and new D_{sJ}-states and/or X(3872) might contain four quarks. I review efforts to search for and study this ``new'' spectroscopy in pbarp-collisions with the CDF II detector. Pentaquark searches are negative, and no evidence for exotic analogs of D_{sJ}-states was found. CDF has confirmed the X(3872). My main focus is the production and decay properties of the X(3872), and its possible interpretations. Comparison of Three-jet Events in Proton-Antiproton Collisions at Center-of-mass Energy 1.8 TeV to Predictions from a Next-to-leading Order QCD Calculation

The properties of three-jet events with total transverse energy greater than 320 GeV and individual jet energy greater than 20 GeV have been analyzed and compared to absolute predictions from a next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD calculation. These data, of integrated luminosity 86 pb^-1, were recorded by the CDF Experiment for proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV. This study tests a model of higher order QCD processes that result in gluon emission and can be used to estimate the magnitude of the contribution of processes higher than NLO. The total cross section is measured to be 466 +/- 3(stat.)^{+207}_{-70}(syst.) pb. The differential cross section is furthermore measured for all kinematically accessible regions of the Dalitz plane, including those for which the theoretical prediction is unreliable. While the measured cross section is consistent with the theoretical prediction in magnitude, the two differ somewhat in shape in the Dalitz plane.

The X(3872) at CDF II

Last year's X(3872) discovery was confirmed with the CDF II detector in pbarp collisions. We measure its mass to be $3871.3 \pm 0.7 \pm 0.4 MeV/c2$. The source of X-mesons in the large CDF sample is resolved by studying their vertex displacement. We find $16.1 \pm 4.9 \pm 2.0$% of our X-sample comes from decays of b-hadrons, and the remainder from prompt sources: either direct production or by decay of (unknown) short-lived particles. The mix of production sources is similar to that observed for the psi(2S) charmonium state.

Weak localization in the 2D metallic regime of Si-MOS

The negative magnetoresistance due to weak localization is investigated in the two-dimensional metallic state of Si-MOS structures for high conductance values between 35 and 120 e^2/h. The extracted phase coherence time is equal to the momentum relaxation time at 10 K but nearly 100 times longer at the lowest temperature. Nevertheless, only weak logarithmic corrections to the conductivity are present in the investigated temperature and concentration range thus proving the absence of strong quantum effects due to electron-electron interaction. From saturation effects of the phase coherence time a lower boundary for spin-orbit scattering of about 200 ps is estimated.

Interaction effects at the magnetic-field induced metal-insulator transition in Si/SiGe superlattices

A metal-insulator transition was induced by in-plane magnetic fields up to 27 T in homogeneously Sb-doped Si/SiGe superlattice structures. The localisation is not observed for perpendicular magnetic fields. A comparison with magnetoconductivity investigations in the weakly localised regime shows that the delocalising effect originates from the interaction-induced spin-triplet term in the particle-hole diffusion channel. It is expected that this term, possibly together with the singlet particle-particle contribution, is of general importance in disordered n-type Si bulk and heterostructures.
