Consecutive level spacings in the chiral Gaussian unitary ensemble: From the hard and soft edge to the bulk

The local spectral statistics of random matrices forms distinct universality classes, strongly depending on the position in the spectrum. Surprisingly, the spacing between consecutive eigenvalues at the spectral edges has received little attention, where the density diverges or vanishes, respectively. This different behaviour is called hard or soft edge. We show that the spacings at the edges are almost indistinguishable from the spacing in the bulk of the spectrum. We present analytical results for consecutive spacings between the $k$th and $(k+1)$st smallest eigenvalues in the chiral Gaussian unitary ensemble, both for finite- and large-$n$. The result depends on the number of the generic zero modes $ν$ and the number of flavours $N_{\rm f}$, which are given in terms of characteristic polynomials, as motivated by Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). We find that the convergence in $n$ is very rapid. The same can be said separately about the limit $k\to\infty$ (limit to the bulk) and $ν\to\infty$ (limit to the soft edge). Interestingly, the Wigner surmise is a very good approximation for all these cases and, apart from $k=1$, shows a deviation below one percent. These findings are corroborated with Monte-Carlo simulations. We finally compare for $k=1$ with data from QCD on the lattice, being in this symmetry class.

Completing the picture for the smallest eigenvalue of real Wishart matrices

Rectangular real $N \times (N + ν)$ matrices $W$ with a Gaussian distribution appear very frequently in data analysis, condensed matter physics and quantum field theory. A central question concerns the correlations encoded in the spectral statistics of $WW^T$. The extreme eigenvalues of $W W^T$ are of particular interest. We explicitly compute the distribution and the gap probability of the smallest non-zero eigenvalue in this ensemble, both for arbitrary fixed $N$ and $ν$, and in the universal large $N$ limit with $ν$ fixed. We uncover an integrable Pfaffian structure valid for all even values of $ν\geq 0$. This extends previous results for odd $ν$ at infinite $N$ and recursive results for finite $N$ and for all $ν$. Our mathematical results include the computation of expectation values of half integer powers of characteristic polynomials.

Permanental processes from products of complex and quaternionic induced Ginibre ensembles

We consider products of independent random matrices taken from the induced Ginibre ensemble with complex or quaternion elements. The joint densities for the complex eigenvalues of the product matrix can be written down exactly for a product of any fixed number of matrices and any finite matrix size. We show that the squared absolute values of the eigenvalues form a permanental process, generalising the results of Kostlan and Rider for single matrices to products of complex and quaternionic matrices. Based on these findings, we can first write down exact results and asymptotic expansions for the so-called hole probabilities, that a disc centered at the origin is void of eigenvalues. Second, we compute the asymptotic expansion for the opposite problem, that a large fraction of complex eigenvalues occupies a disc of fixed radius centered at the origin; this is known as the overcrowding problem. While the expressions for finite matrix size depend on the parameters of the induced ensembles, the asymptotic results agree to leading order with previous results for products of square Ginibre matrices.

The Interpolating Airy Kernels for the beta=1 and beta=4 Elliptic Ginibre Ensembles

We consider two families of non-Hermitian Gaussian random matrices, namely the elliptical Ginibre ensembles of asymmetric N-by-N matrices with Dyson index beta=1 (real elements) and with beta=4 (quaternion-real elements). Both ensembles have already been solved for finite N using the method of skew-orthogonal polynomials, given for these particular ensembles in terms of Hermite polynomials in the complex plane. In this paper we investigate the microscopic weakly non-Hermitian large-N limit of each ensemble in the vicinity of the largest or smallest real eigenvalue. Specifically, we derive the limiting matrix-kernels for each case, from which all the eigenvalue correlation functions can be determined. We call these new kernels the "interpolating" Airy kernels, since we can recover -- as opposing limiting cases -- not only the well-known Airy kernels for the Hermitian ensembles, but also the complementary error function and Poisson kernels for the maximally non-Hermitian ensembles at the edge of the spectrum. Together with the known interpolating Airy kernel for beta=2, which we rederive here as well, this completes the analysis of all three elliptical Ginibre ensembles in the microscopic scaling limit at the spectral edge.

Individual Eigenvalue Distributions for the Wilson Dirac Operator

We derive the distributions of individual eigenvalues for the Hermitian Wilson Dirac Operator D5 as well as for real eigenvalues of the Wilson Dirac Operator DW. The framework we provide is valid in the epsilon regime of chiral perturbation theory for any number of flavours Nf and for non-zero low energy constants W6, W7, W8. It is given as a perturbative expansion in terms of the k-point spectral density correlation functions and integrals thereof, which in some cases reduces to a Fredholm Pfaffian. For the real eigenvalues of DW at fixed chirality nu this expansion truncates after at most nu terms for small lattice spacing "a". Explicit examples for the distribution of the first and second eigenvalue are given in the microscopic domain as a truncated expansion of the Fredholm Pfaffian for quenched D5, where all k-point densities are explicitly known from random matrix theory. For the real eigenvalues of quenched DW at small "a" we illustrate our method by the finite expansion of the corresponding Fredholm determinant of size nu.

The k-th Smallest Dirac Operator Eigenvalue and the Pion Decay Constant

We derive an analytical expression for the distribution of the k-th smallest Dirac eigenvalue in QCD with imaginary isospin chemical potential in the Dirac operator. Because of its dependence on the pion decay constant F through the chemical potential in the epsilon-regime of chiral perturbation theory this can be used for lattice determinations of that low-energy constant. On the technical side we use a chiral Random-Two Matrix Theory, where we express the k-th eigenvalue distribution through the joint probability of the ordered k smallest eigenvalues. The latter can be computed exactly for finite and infinite N, for which we derive generalisations of Dyson's integration Theorem and Sonine's identity.

Universal microscopic correlation functions for products of independent Ginibre matrices

We consider the product of n complex non-Hermitian, independent random matrices, each of size NxN with independent identically distributed Gaussian entries (Ginibre matrices). The joint probability distribution of the complex eigenvalues of the product matrix is found to be given by a determinantal point process as in the case of a single Ginibre matrix, but with a more complicated weight given by a Meijer G-function depending on n. Using the method of orthogonal polynomials we compute all eigenvalue density correlation functions exactly for finite N and fixed n. They are given by the determinant of the corresponding kernel which we construct explicitly. In the large-N limit at fixed n we first determine the microscopic correlation functions in the bulk and at the edge of the spectrum. After unfolding they are identical to that of the Ginibre ensemble with n=1 and thus universal. In contrast the microscopic correlations we find at the origin differ for each n>1 and generalise the known Bessel-law in the complex plane for n=2 to a new hypergeometric kernel 0_F_n-1.

Universality Conjecture for all Airy, Sine and Bessel Kernels in the Complex Plane

We address the question of how the celebrated universality of local correlations for the real eigenvalues of Hermitian random matrices of size NxN can be extended to complex eigenvalues in the case of random matrices without symmetry. Depending on the location in the spectrum, particular large-N limits (the so-called weakly non-Hermitian limits) lead to one-parameter deformations of the Airy, sine and Bessel kernels into the complex plane. This makes their universality highly suggestive for all symmetry classes. We compare all the known limiting real kernels and their deformations into the complex plane for all three Dyson indices beta=1,2,4, corresponding to real, complex and quaternion real matrix elements. This includes new results for Airy kernels in the complex plane for beta=1,4. For the Gaussian ensembles of elliptic Ginibre and non-Hermitian Wishart matrices we give all kernels for finite N, built from orthogonal and skew-orthogonal polynomials in the complex plane. Finally we comment on how much is known to date regarding the universality of these kernels in the complex plane, and discuss some open problems.

Random matrix theory of unquenched two-colour QCD with nonzero chemical potential

We solve a random two-matrix model with two real asymmetric matrices whose primary purpose is to describe certain aspects of quantum chromodynamics with two colours and dynamical fermions at nonzero quark chemical potential mu. In this symmetry class the determinant of the Dirac operator is real but not necessarily positive. Despite this sign problem the unquenched matrix model remains completely solvable and provides detailed predictions for the Dirac operator spectrum in two different physical scenarios/limits: (i) the epsilon-regime of chiral perturbation theory at small mu, where mu^2 multiplied by the volume remains fixed in the infinite-volume limit and (ii) the high-density regime where a BCS gap is formed and mu is unscaled. We give explicit examples for the complex, real, and imaginary eigenvalue densities including Nf=2 non-degenerate flavours. Whilst the limit of two degenerate masses has no sign problem and can be tested with standard lattice techniques, we analyse the severity of the sign problem for non-degenerate masses as a function of the mass split and of mu. On the mathematical side our new results include an analytical formula for the spectral density of real Wishart eigenvalues in the limit (i) of weak non-Hermiticity, thus completing the previous solution of the corresponding quenched model of two real asymmetric Wishart matrices.

Spectrum of the Wilson Dirac Operator at Finite Lattice Spacings

We consider the effect of discretization errors on the microscopic spectrum of the Wilson Dirac operator using both chiral Perturbation Theory and chiral Random Matrix Theory. A graded chiral Lagrangian is used to evaluate the microscopic spectral density of the Hermitian Wilson Dirac operator as well as the distribution of the chirality over the real eigenvalues of the Wilson Dirac operator. It is shown that a chiral Random Matrix Theory for the Wilson Dirac operator reproduces the leading zero-momentum terms of Wilson chiral Perturbation Theory. All results are obtained for fixed index of the Wilson Dirac operator. The low-energy constants of Wilson chiral Perturbation theory are shown to be constrained by the Hermiticity properties of the Wilson Dirac operator.

Effects of dynamical quarks on the spectrum of the Wilson Dirac operator

Effects of dynamical quarks on the microscopic spectrum of the Wilson Dirac operator are analyzed by means of effective field theory. We consider the distributions of the real modes of the Wilson Dirac operator as well as the spectrum of the Hermitian Wilson Dirac operator, and work out the case of one flavor in all detail. In contrast to the quenched case, the theory has a mild sign problem that manifests itself by giving a spectral density that is not positive definite as the spectral gap closes.

Skew-orthogonal Laguerre polynomials for chiral real asymmetric random matrices

We apply the method of skew-orthogonal polynomials (SOP) in the complex plane to asymmetric random matrices with real elements, belonging to two different classes. Explicit integral representations valid for arbitrary weight functions are derived for the SOP and for their Cauchy transforms, given as expectation values of traces and determinants or their inverses, respectively. Our proof uses the fact that the joint probability distribution function for all combinations of real eigenvalues and complex conjugate eigenvalue pairs can be written as a product. Examples for the SOP are given in terms of Laguerre polynomials for the chiral ensemble (also called the non-Hermitian real Wishart-Laguerre ensemble), both without and with the insertion of characteristic polynomials. Such characteristic polynomials play the role of mass terms in applications to complex Dirac spectra in field theory. In addition, for the elliptic real Ginibre ensemble we recover the SOP of Forrester and Nagao in terms of Hermite polynomials.

Wilson Fermions, Random Matrix Theory and the Aoki Phase

The QCD partition function for the Wilson Dirac operator, $D_W$, at nonzero lattice spacing $a$ can be expressed in terms of a chiral Lagrangian as a systematic expansion in the quark mass, the momentum and $a^2$. Starting from this chiral Lagrangian we obtain an analytical expression for the spectral density of $γ_5 (D_W+m)$ in the microscopic domain. It is shown that the $γ_5$-Hermiticity of the Dirac operator necessarily leads to a coefficient of the $a^2$ term that is consistent with the existence of an Aoki phase. The transition to the Aoki phase is explained, and the interplay of the index of $D_W$ and nonzero $a$ is discussed. We formulate a random matrix theory for the Wilson Dirac operator with index $ν$ (which, in the continuum limit, becomes equal to the topological charge of gauge field configurations). It is shown by an explicit calculation that this random matrix theory reproduces the $a^2$-dependence of the chiral Lagrangian in the microscopic domain, and that the sign of the $a^2$-term is directly related to the $γ_5$-Hermiticity of $D_W$.

A Wigner Surmise for Hermitian and Non-Hermitian Chiral Random Matrices

We use the idea of a Wigner surmise to compute approximate distributions of the first eigenvalue in chiral Random Matrix Theory, for both real and complex eigenvalues. Testing against known results for zero and maximal non-Hermiticity in the microscopic large-N limit we find an excellent agreement, valid for a small number of exact zero-eigenvalues. New compact expressions are derived for real eigenvalues in the orthogonal and symplectic classes, and at intermediate non-Hermiticity for the unitary and symplectic classes. Such individual Dirac eigenvalue distributions are a useful tool in Lattice Gauge Theory and we illustrate this by showing that our new results can describe data from two-colour QCD simulations with chemical potential in the symplectic class.

Gap Probabilities in Non-Hermitian Random Matrix Theory

We compute the gap probability that a circle of radius r around the origin contains exactly k complex eigenvalues. Four different ensembles of random matrices are considered: the Ginibre ensembles and their chiral complex counterparts, with both complex (beta=2) or quaternion real (beta=4) matrix elements. For general non-Gaussian weights we give a Fredholm determinant or Pfaffian representation respectively, depending on the non-Hermiticity parameter. At maximal non-Hermiticity, that is for rotationally invariant weights, the product of Fredholm eigenvalues for beta=4 follows from beta=2 by skipping every second factor, in contrast to the known relation for Hermitian ensembles. On additionally choosing Gaussian weights we give new explicit expressions for the Fredholm eigenvalues in the chiral case, in terms of Bessel-K and incomplete Bessel-I functions. This compares to known results for the Ginibre ensembles in terms of incomplete exponentials. Furthermore we present an asymptotic expansion of the logarithm of the gap probability for large argument r at large N in all four ensembles, up to including the third order linear term. We can provide strict upper and lower bounds and present numerical evidence for its conjectured values, depending on the number of exact zero eigenvalues in the chiral ensembles. For the Ginibre ensemble at beta=2 exact results were previously derived by Forrester.

The chiral Gaussian two-matrix ensemble of real asymmetric matrices

We solve a family of Gaussian two-matrix models with rectangular Nx(N+v) matrices, having real asymmetric matrix elements and depending on a non-Hermiticity parameter mu. Our model can be thought of as the chiral extension of the real Ginibre ensemble, relevant for Dirac operators in the same symmetry class. It has the property that its eigenvalues are either real, purely imaginary, or come in complex conjugate eigenvalue pairs. The eigenvalue joint probability distribution for our model is explicitly computed, leading to a non-Gaussian distribution including K-Bessel functions. All n-point density correlation functions are expressed for finite N in terms of a Pfaffian form. This contains a kernel involving Laguerre polynomials in the complex plane as a building block which was previously computed by the authors. This kernel can be expressed in terms of the kernel for complex non-Hermitian matrices, generalising the known relation among ensembles of Hermitian random matrices. Compact expressions are given for the density at finite N as an example, as well as its microscopic large-N limits at the origin for fixed v at strong and weak non-Hermiticity.

Individual Eigenvalue Distributions of Chiral Random Two-Matrix Theory and the Determination of F_pi

Dirac operator eigenvalues split into two when subjected to two different external vector sources. In a specific finite-volume scaling regime of gauge theories with fermions, this problem can be mapped to a chiral Random Two-Matrix Theory. We derive analytical expressions to leading order in the associated finite-volume expansion, showing how individual Dirac eigenvalue distributions and their correlations equivalently can be computed directly from the effective chiral Lagrangian in the epsilon-regime. Because of its equivalence to chiral Random Two-Matrix Theory, we use the latter for all explicit computations. On the mathematical side, we define and determine gap probabilities and individual eigenvalue distributions in that theory at finite N, and also derive the relevant scaling limit as N is taken to infinity. In particular, the gap probability for one Dirac eigenvalue is given in terms of a new kernel that depends on the external vector source. This expression may give a new and simple way of determining the pion decay constant F_pi from lattice gauge theory simulations.

On matrix model partition functions for QCD with chemical potential

Partition functions of two different matrix models for QCD with chemical potential are computed for an arbitrary number of quark and complex conjugate anti-quark flavors. In the large-N limit of weak nonhermiticity complete agreement is found between the two models. This supports the universality of such fermionic partition functions, that is of products of characteristic polynomials in the complex plane. In the strong nonhermiticity limit agreement is found for an equal number of quark and conjugate flavours. For a general flavor content the equality of partition functions holds only for small chemical potential. The chiral phase transition is analyzed for an arbitrary number of quarks, where the free energy presents a discontinuity of first order at a critical chemical potential. In the case of nondegenerate flavors there is first order phase transition for each separate mass scale.

Characteristic Polynomials of Complex Random Matrix Models

We calculate the expectation value of an arbitrary product of characteristic polynomials of complex random matrices and their hermitian conjugates. Using the technique of orthogonal polynomials in the complex plane our result can be written in terms of a determinant containing these polynomials and their kernel. It generalizes the known expression for hermitian matrices and it also provides a generalization of the Christoffel formula to the complex plane. The derivation we present holds for complex matrix models with a general weight function at finite-N, where N is the size of the matrix. We give some explicit examples at finite-N for specific weight functions. The characteristic polynomials in the large-N limit at weak and strong non-hermiticity follow easily and they are universal in the weak limit. We also comment on the issue of the BMN large-N limit.

Microscopic universality of complex matrix model correlation functions at weak non-Hermiticity

The microscopic correlation functions of non-chiral random matrix models with complex eigenvalues are analyzed for a wide class of non-Gaussian measures. In the large-N limit of weak non-Hermiticity, where N is the size of the complex matrices, we can prove that all k-point correlation functions including an arbitrary number of Dirac mass terms are universal close to the origin. To this aim we establish the universality of the asymptotics of orthogonal polynomials in the complex plane. The universality of the correlation functions then follows from that of the kernel of orthogonal polynomials and a mapping of massive to massless correlators.

New Critical Matrix Models and Generalized Universality

We study a class of one-matrix models with an action containing nonpolynomial terms. By tuning the coupling constants in the action to criticality we obtain that the eigenvalue density vanishes as an arbitrary real power at the origin, thus defining a new class of multicritical matrix models. The corresponding microscopic scaling law is given and possible applications to the chiral phase transition in QCD are discussed. For generic coupling constants off-criticality we prove that all microscopic correlation functions at the origin of the spectrum remain in the known Bessel universality class. An arbitrary number of Dirac mass terms can be included and the corresponding massive universality is maintained as well. We also investigate the critical behavior at the edge of the spectrum: there, in contrast to the behavior at the origin, we find the same critical exponents as derived from matrix models with a polynomial action.

On Finite-Volume Gauge Theory Partition Functions

We prove a Mahoux-Mehta--type theorem for finite-volume partition functions of SU(N_c\geq 3) gauge theories coupled to fermions in the fundamental representation. The large-volume limit is taken with the constraint V << 1/m_π^4. The theorem allows one to express any k-point correlation function of the microscopic Dirac operator spectrum entirely in terms of the 2-point function. The sum over topological charges of the gauge fields can be explicitly performed for these k-point correlation functions. A connection to an integrable KP hierarchy, for which the finite-volume partition function is a $τ$-function, is pointed out. Relations between the effective partition functions for these theories in 3 and 4 dimensions are derived. We also compute analytically, and entirely from finite-volume partition functions, the microscopic spectral density of the Dirac operator in SU(N_c) gauge theories coupled to quenched fermions in the adjoint representation. The result coincides exactly with earlier results based on Random Matrix Theory.

Universality of random matrices in the microscopic limit and the Dirac operator spectrum

We prove the universality of correlation functions of chiral unitary and unitary ensembles of random matrices in the microscopic limit. The essence of the proof consists in reducing the three-term recursion relation for the relevant orthogonal polynomials into a Bessel equation governing the local asymptotics around the origin. The possible physical interpretation as the universality of soft spectrum of the Dirac operator is briefly discussed.
