Computation of harmonic weak Maass forms

Harmonic weak Maass forms of half-integral weight are the subject of many recent works. They are closely related to Ramanujan's mock theta functions, their theta lifts give rise to Arakelov Green functions, and their coefficients are often related to central values and derivatives of Hecke L-functions. We present an algorithm to compute harmonic weak Maass forms numerically, based on the automorphy method due to Hejhal and Stark. As explicit examples we consider harmonic weak Maass forms of weight 1/2 associated to the elliptic curves 11a1, 37a1, 37b1. We made extensive numerical computations and the data we obtained is presented in the final section of the paper. We expect that experiments based on our data will lead to a better understanding of the arithmetic properties of the Fourier coefficients.

Newforms and Spectral Multiplicities for $Γ_0(9)$

The goal of this paper is to explain certain experimentally observed properties of the (cuspidal) spectrum and its associated automorphic forms (Maass waveforms) on the congruence subgroup $Γ_{0}(9)$. The first property is that the spectrum possesses multiplicities in the so-called new part, where it was previously believed to be simple. The second property is that the spectrum does not contain any "genuinely new" eigenvalues, in the sense that all eigenvalues of $Γ_{0}(9)$ appear in the spectrum of some congruence subgroup of lower level. The main theorem in this paper gives a precise decomposition of the spectrum of $Γ_{0}(9)$ and in particular we show that the genuinely new part is empty. We also prove that there exist an infinite number of eigenvalues of $Γ_{0}(9)$ where the corresponding eigenspace is of dimension at least two and has a basis of pairs of Hecke-Maass newforms which are related to each other by a character twist. These forms are non-holomorphic analogues of modular forms with inner twists and also provide explicit (affirmative) examples of a conjecture stating that if the Hecke eigenvalues of two "generic" Maass newforms coincide on a set of primes of density 1/2 then they have to be related by a character twist.

Weil representations associated to finite quadratic modules

To a finite quadratic module, that is, a finite abelian group D together with a non-singular quadratic form Q:D --> Q/Z, it is possible to associate a representation of either the modular group, SL(2,Z), or its metaplectic cover, Mp(2,Z), on C[D], the group algebra of D. This representation is usually called the Weil representation associated to the finite quadratic module. The main result of this paper is a general explicit formula for the matrix coefficients of this representation. The formula, which involves the p-adic invariants of the quadratic module, is given in a way which is easy to implement on a computer. The result presented completes an earlier result by Scheithauer for the Weil representation associated to a discriminant form of even signature.

The transfer operator for the Hecke triangle groups

In this paper we extend the transfer operator approach to Selberg's zeta function for cofinite Fuchsian groups to the Hecke triangle groups G_q, q=3,4,..., which are non-arithmetic for q \not= 3,4,6. For this we make use of a Poincare map for the geodesic flow on the corresponding Hecke surfaces which has been constructed in arXiv:0801.3951 and which is closely related to the natural extension of the generating map for the so called Hurwitz-Nakada continued fractions. We derive simple functional equations for the eigenfunctions of the transfer operator which for eigenvalues rho =1 are expected to be closely related to the period functions of Lewis and Zagier for these Hecke triangle groups.
