A Robust Two-Level Schwarz Preconditioner For Sparse Matrices

This paper introduces a fully algebraic two-level additive Schwarz preconditioner for general sparse large-scale matrices. The preconditioner is analyzed for symmetric positive definite (SPD) matrices. For those matrices, the coarse space is constructed based on approximating two local subspaces in each subdomain. These subspaces are obtained by approximating a number of eigenvectors corresponding to dominant eigenvalues of two judiciously posed generalized eigenvalue problems. The number of eigenvectors can be chosen to control the condition number. For general sparse matrices, the coarse space is constructed by approximating the image of a local operator that can be defined from information in the coefficient matrix. The connection between the coarse spaces for SPD and general matrices is also discussed. Numerical experiments show the great effectiveness of the proposed preconditioners on matrices arising from a wide range of applications. The set of matrices includes SPD, symmetric indefinite, nonsymmetric, and saddle-point matrices. In addition, we compare the proposed preconditioners to the state-of-the-art domain decomposition preconditioners.

Mathematical Analysis of Robustness of Two-Level Domain Decomposition Methods with respect to Inexact Coarse Solves

Convergence of domain decomposition methods rely heavily on the efficiency of the coarse space used in the second level. The GenEO coarse space has been shown to lead to a fully robust two-level Schwarz preconditioner which scales well over multiple cores [27, 19] as has been proved rigorously in [27]. The robustness is due to its good approximation properties for problems with highly heterogeneous material parameters. It is available in the finite element packages FreeFem++, Feel++ and recently in Dune and is implemented as a standalone library in HPDDM But the coarse component of the preconditioner can ultimately become a bottleneck if the number of subdomains is very large and exact solves are used. It is therefore interesting to consider the effect of approximate coarse solves. In this paper, robustness of GenEO methods is analyzed with respect to approximate coarse solves. Interestingly, the GenEO-2 method has to be modified in order to be able to prove its robustness in this context.

Parallel Controllability Methods For the Helmholtz Equation

The Helmholtz equation is notoriously difficult to solve with standard numerical methods, increasingly so, in fact, at higher frequencies. Controllability methods instead transform the problem back to the time-domain, where they seek the time-harmonic solution of the corresponding time-dependent wave equation. Two different approaches are considered here based either on the first or second-order formulation of the wave equation. Both are extended to general boundary-value problems governed by the Helmholtz equation and lead to robust and inherently parallel algorithms. Numerical results illustrate the accuracy, convergence and strong scalability of controllability methods for the solution of high frequency Helmholtz equations with up to a billion unknowns on massively parallel architectures.

Robin Schwarz algorithm for the NICEM Method: the Pq finite element case

In Gander et al. [2004] we proposed a new non-conforming domain decomposition paradigm, the New Interface Cement Equilibrated Mortar (NICEM) method, based on Schwarz type methods that allows for the use of Robin interface conditions on non-conforming grids. The error analysis was done for P1 finite elements, in 2D and 3D. In this paper, we provide new numerical analysis results that allow to extend this error analysis in 2D for piecewise polynomials of higher order and also prove the convergence of the iterative algorithm in all these cases.

Generalized Filtering Decomposition

This paper introduces a new preconditioning technique that is suitable for matrices arising from the discretization of a system of PDEs on unstructured grids. The preconditioner satisfies a so-called filtering property, which ensures that the input matrix is identical with the preconditioner on a given filtering vector. This vector is chosen to alleviate the effect of low frequency modes on convergence and so decrease or eliminate the plateau which is often observed in the convergence of iterative methods. In particular, the paper presents a general approach that allows to ensure that the filtering condition is satisfied in a matrix decomposition. The input matrix can have an arbitrary sparse structure. Hence, it can be reordered using nested dissection, to allow a parallel computation of the preconditioner and of the iterative process.
