Metrology of Rydberg states of the hydrogen atom

We present a method to precisly measure the frequencies of transitions to high-$n$ Rydberg states of the hydrogen atom which are not subject to uncontrolled systematic shifts caused by stray electric fields. The method consists in recording Stark spectra of the field-insensitive $k=0$ Stark states and the field-sensitive $k=\pm2$ Stark states, which are used to calibrate the electric field strength. We illustrate this method with measurements of transitions from the $2\,\text{s}(f=0\text{ and } 1)$ hyperfine levels in the presence of intentionally applied electric fields with strengths in the range between $0.4$ and $1.6\,$Vcm$^{-1}$. The slightly field-dependent $k=0$ level energies are corrected with a precisely calculated shift to obtain the corresponding Bohr energies $\left(-cR_{\mathrm{H}}/n^2\right)$. The energy difference between $n=20$ and $n=24$ obtained with our method agrees with Bohr's formula within the $10\,$kHz experimental uncertainty. We also determined the hyperfine splitting of the $2\,\text{s}$ state by taking the difference between transition frequencies from the $2\,\text{s}(f=0 \text{ and }1)$ levels to the $n=20,k=0$ Stark states. Our results demonstrate the possibility of carrying out precision measurements in high-$n$ hydrogenic quantum states.

Characterization of the electronic ground state of Mg$_2^+$ by PFI-ZEKE photoelectron spectroscopy

The $\mathrm{X}^+\ ^2Σ_u^+$ ground electronic state of the Mg$_2^+$ ion has been studied by pulsed-field-ionization zero-kinetic-energy (PFI-ZEKE) photoelectron spectroscopy. Rotationally cold Mg$_2$ molecules produced in a laser-ablation supersonic-expansion source were ionized by resonant two-photon absorption from the $\mathrm{X}\ ^1Σ_g^+(v"=0)$ ground vibronic state. The photoelectron spectra of the $v^+=3-14$ vibrational levels of the $\mathrm{X}^+$ state were recorded with rotational resolution and their analysis led to the determination of accurate term values and rotational constants for these levels. Improved values of the adiabatic ionization energy of $^{24}$Mg$_2$ ($51\,503.9(4)$ cm$^{-1}$) and of the ground-state dissociation energy of $^{24}$Mg$_2^+$ ($10 572.3(6)$ cm$^{-1}$) were determined from experimental data.

Precision millimetre-wave spectroscopy and calculation of the Stark manifolds in high Rydberg states of para-H$_2$

Precision measurements of transitions between singlet ($S=0$) Rydberg states of H$_2$ belonging to series converging on the $\mathrm{X}^+\,^2Σ_g^+(v^+=0,N^+=0)$ state of H$_2^+$ have been carried out by millimetre-wave spectroscopy under field-free conditions and in the presence of weak static electric fields. The Stark effect mixes states with different values of the orbital-angular-momentum quantum number $\ell$ and leads to quadratic Stark shifts of low-$\ell$ states and to linear Stark shifts of the nearly degenerate manifold of high-$\ell$ states. Transitions to the Stark manifold were observed for the principal numbers 50 and 70, at fields below 50 mV/cm, with linewidths below 500~kHz. The energy-level structure was calculated using a matrix-diagonalisation approach, in which the zero-field positions of the $\ell\leq 3$ Rydberg states were obtained either from multichannel-quantum-defect-theory calculations or experiment, and those of the $\ell\geq 4$ Rydberg states from a long-range core-polarisation model. This approach offers the advantage of including rovibronic channel interactions through the MQDT treatment while retaining the advantages of a spherical basis for the determination of the off-diagonal elements of the Stark operator. Comparison of experimental and calculated transition frequencies enabled the quantitative description of the Stark manifolds, with residuals typically below 50 kHz. We demonstrate how the procedure leads to quantum defects and binding energies of high Rydberg states with unprecedented accuracy, opening up new prospects for the determination of ionisation energies in molecules.

Structure and dynamics of HD$^+$ in the vicinity of the H$^+$ + D and D$^+$ + H dissociation thresholds: Feshbach resonances and the role of g/u-symmetry breaking

We report on the measurement and analysis of photoionisation, mass-analysed-threshold-ionisation and pulsed-field-ionisation zero-kinetic-energy photoelectron spectra of HD in the vicinity of the dissociative-ionisation thresholds H$^+$ + D(1s) + e$^-$ and H(1s) + D$^+$ + e$^-$. The spectra were recorded via the $v=11$-13 vibrational levels of the $\bar{\rm H}$ and $\bar{\rm B}$ outer wells of the H$\bar{\rm H}$~$^1Σ_g^+$ and B$^{\prime\prime}\bar{\rm B}$~$^1Σ_u^+$ states and provide information on the weakly bound levels of the X$^+$ $^2Σ_g^+$ ground state of HD$^+$ with vibrational quantum numbers $v^+=16$-21 and rotational angular-momentum quantum numbers $N^+=0$-10. The spectra also reveal for the first time shape and Feshbach resonances of HD$^+$ located energetically above the H$^+$ + D(1s) dissociation limit. The structure and dissociation dynamics of the $\bar{\rm H}$ and $\bar{\rm B}$ states of HD and of the X$^+$ $^2Σ_g^+$ and A$^+$ $^2Σ_u^+$ states of HD$^+$ near the dissociation thresholds are strongly influenced by the g/u-symmetry breaking caused by the nuclear-mass asymmetry.

Precision Measurements in Few-Electron Molecules: The Ionization Energy of Metastable $\mathbf{^4}$He$\mathbf{_2}$ and the First Rotational Interval of $\mathbf{^4}$He$\mathbf{{_2}^+}$

Molecular helium represents a benchmark system for testing $\textit{ab initio}$ calculations on few-electron molecules. We report on the determination of the adiabatic ionization energy of the $a\,^3Σ_u^+$ state of He$_2$, corresponding to the energy interval between the $a\,^3Σ_u^+$ ($v''=0$, $N''=1$) state of He$_2$ and the $X^+\,^2Σ_u^+$ ($v^+=0$, $N^+=1$) state of He${_2}^+$, and of the lowest rotational interval of He${_2}^+$. These measurements rely on the excitation of metastable He$_2$ molecules to high Rydberg states using frequency-comb-calibrated continuous-wave UV radiation in a counter-propagating-laser-beam setup. The observed Rydberg states were extrapolated to their series limit using multichannel quantum-defect theory. The ionization energy of He$_2$ ($a\,^3Σ_u^+$) and the lowest rotational interval of He${_2}^+$ ($X^+\,^2Σ_u^+$) are 34301.207002(23)$\pm 0.000037_{\mathrm{sys}}$ cm$^{-1}$ and 70.937589(23)$\pm 0.000060_{\mathrm{sys}}$ cm$^{-1}$, respectively.

Long-range Rydberg molecules, Rydberg macrodimers and Rydberg aggregates in an ultracold Cs gas

We present an overview of our recent investigations of long-range interactions in an ultracold Cs Rydberg gas. These interactions are studied by high-resolution photoassociation spectroscopy, using excitation close to one-photon transitions into $n$p$_{3/2}$ Rydberg states with pulsed and continuous-wave ultraviolet laser radiation, and lead to the formation of long-range Cs$_2$ molecules. We observe two types of molecular resonances. The first type originates from the correlated excitation of two atoms into Rydberg-atom-pair states interacting at long range via multipole-multipole interactions. The second type results from the interaction of one atom excited to a Rydberg state with one atom in the electronic ground state. Which type of resonances is observed in the experiments depends on the laser intensity and frequency and on the pulse sequences used to prepare the Rydberg states. We obtain insights into both types of molecular resonances by modelling the interaction potentials, using a multipole expansion of the long-range interaction for the first type of resonances and a Fermi-contact pseudo-potential for the second type of resonances. We analyse the relation of these long-range molecular resonances to molecular Rydberg states and ion-pair states, and discuss their decay channels into atomic and molecular ions. In experiments carried out with a two-colour two-photon excitation scheme, we observe a large enhancement of Rydberg-excitation probability, which we interpret as a saturable autocatalytic antiblockade phenomenon.

Precision measurement of the ionization energy of Cs I

We present absolute-frequency measurements for the transitions from the 6s$_{1/2}$ ground state of $^{133}$Cs to $n$p$_{1/2}$ and $n$p$_{3/2}$ Rydberg states. The transition frequencies are determined by one-photon UV spectroscopy in ultracold samples of Cs atoms using a narrowband laser system referenced to a frequency comb. From a global fit of the ionization energy $E_\mathrm{I}$ and the quantum defects of the two series we determine an improved value of $E_\mathrm{I} = h c \cdot 31 406.467 732 5(14)$ cm$^{-1}$ for the ionization energy of Cs with a relative uncertainty of $5\times10^{-11}$. We also report improved values for the quantum defects of the $n$p$_{1/2}$, $n$p$_{3/2}$, $n$s$_{1/2}$, and $n$d$_{5/2}$ series.

Structure and dynamics of H$_2^+$ near the dissociation threshold: a combined experimental and computational investigation

The pulsed-field-ionization zero-kinetic-energy photoelectron spectrum of H$_2$ has been recorded in the vicinity of the dissociative-ionization threshold following three-photon excitation via selected rotational levels of the B $^1Σ_u^+$ ($v=19$) and $\bar{\rm H}$ $^1Σ_g^+$ ($v=11$) intermediate states. The spectra consist of transitions to bound levels of the X$^+$ $^2Σ_g^+$ state of H$_2^+$ with $v^+$ in the range 14-19 and $N^+$ in the range 0-9, of the A$^+$ $^2Σ_u^+$ state with $v^+=0$ and $N^+=0-2$, and of shape resonances corresponding to the X$^+\ (v^+=17,N^+=7)$ and X$^+\ (v^+=18,N^+=4)$ quasibound levels. Calculations of the level structure of H$_2^+$ have been carried out and the influence of adiabatic, nonadiabatic, relativistic and radiative corrections on the positions of these levels, and in the case of the shape resonances also on their widths, has been investigated. Different methods of calculating the widths and profiles of the shape resonances have been tested for comparison with the experimental observations. Slow oscillations of the dissociative-ionization yield have been observed and reflect, in first approximation, the Franck-Condon factors of the $\bar{\text H}$ $\rightarrow$ X$^+$, A$^+$ bound - free transitions.

Experimental characterization of singlet scattering channels in long-range Rydberg molecules

We observe the formation of long-range Cs$_2$ Rydberg molecules consisting of a Rydberg and a ground-state atom by photoassociation spectroscopy in an ultracold Cs gas near 6s$_{1/2}$($F$=3,4)$\rightarrow$np$_{3/2}$ resonances (n=26-34). The spectra reveal two types of molecular states recently predicted by D. A. Anderson, S. A. Miller, and G. Raithel [Phys. Rev. A 90, 062518 (2014)]: states bound purely by triplet s-wave scattering with binding energies ranging from 400 MHz at n=26 to 80 MHz at n=34, and states bound by mixed singlet-triplet s-wave scattering with smaller and F-dependent binding energies. The experimental observations are accounted for by an effective Hamiltonian including s-wave scattering pseudopotentials, the hyperfine interaction of the ground-state atom, and the spin-orbit interaction of the Rydberg atom. The analysis enabled the characterization of the role of singlet scattering in the formation of long-range Rydberg molecules and the determination of an effective singlet s-wave scattering length for low-energy electron-Cs collisions.

Pulsed excitation of Rydberg-atom-pair states in an ultracold Cs gas

Pulsed laser excitation of a dense ultracold Cs vapor has been used to study the pairwise interactions between Cs atoms excited to $n$p$_{3/2}$ Rydberg states of principal quantum numbers in the range $n=22-36$. Molecular resonances were observed that correspond to excitation of Rydberg-atom-pair states correlated not only to the $n$p$_{3/2}+n$p$_{3/2}$ dissociation asymptotes, but also to $n$s$_{1/2}+(n+1)$s$_{1/2}$, $n$s$_{1/2}+n'$f$_{j}$, and $(n-4)$f$_{j}+(n-3)$f$_{j}$ $(j=5/2,7/2)$ dissociation asymptotes. These pair resonances are interpreted as arising from dipole-dipole, and higher-order long-range-interaction terms between the Rydberg atoms on the basis of i) their spectral positions, ii) their response to static and pulsed electric fields, and iii) millimeter-wave spectra between pair states correlated to different pair-dissociation asymptotes. The Rydberg-atom--pair states were found to spontaneously decay by Penning ionization and the dynamics of the ionization process were investigated during the first 10 $μ$s following initial photoexcitation. To interpret the experimental observations, a potential model was derived that is based on the numerical determination of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the long-range interaction Hamiltonian. With this potential model, which does not include adjustable parameters, all experimental observations could be accounted for, and the results demonstrate that long-range-interaction models provide a global and accurate description of interactions in ultracold Rydberg gases and that they correctly account for, and enable the analysis of, phenomena as diverse as the formation of Rydberg macrodimers, Penning ionization in dense Rydberg gases, and Rydberg-excitation blockade effects.

Manipulating Rydberg atoms close to surfaces at cryogenic temperatures

Helium atoms in Rydberg states have been manipulated coherently with microwave radiation pulses near a gold surface and near a superconducting NbTiN surface at a temperature of $3 \text{K}$. The experiments were carried out with a skimmed supersonic beam of metastable $(1\text{s})^1(2\text{s})^1\, {}^1\text{S}_0$ helium atoms excited with laser radiation to $n\text{p}$ Rydberg levels with principal quantum number $n$ between $30$ and $40$. The separation between the cold surface and the center of the collimated beam is adjustable down to $250 μ\text{m}$. Short-lived $n\text{p}$ Rydberg levels were coherently transferred to the long-lived $n\text{s}$ state to avoid radiative decay of the Rydberg atoms between the photoexcitation region and the region above the cold surfaces. Further coherent manipulation of the $n\text{s}$ Rydberg levels with pulsed microwave radiation above the surfaces enabled measurements of stray electric fields and allowed us to study the decoherence of the atomic ensemble. Adsorption of residual gas onto the surfaces and the resulting slow build-up of stray fields was minimized by controlling the temperature of the surface and monitoring the partial pressures of H$_2$O, N$_2$, O$_2$ and CO$_2$ in the experimental chamber during the cool-down. Compensation of the stray electric fields to levels below $100 \text{mV}/\text{cm}$ was achieved over a region of $6 \text{mm}$ along the beam-propagation direction which, for the $1770 \text{m}/\text{s}$ beam velocity, implies the possibility to preserve the coherence of the atomic sample for several microseconds above the cold surfaces.

Observation of dipole-quadrupole interaction in an ultracold gas of Rydberg atoms

We observe the direct excitation of pairs of Cs atoms from the ground state to molecular states correlating asymptotically to $ns\,n'f$ asymptotes. The molecular resonances are interpreted as originating from the dipole-quadrupole interaction between the $ns\,n'f$ pair states and close-by $np\,np$ asymptotes ($22\leq n \leq 32$). This interpretation is supported by Stark spectroscopy of the pair states and a detailed modeling of the interaction potentials. The dipole-quadrupole interaction mixes electronic states of opposite parity and thus requires a coupling between electronic and nuclear motion to conserve the total parity of the system. This non-Born-Oppenheimer coupling is facilitated by the near-degeneracy of even and odd $L$ partial waves in the atom-atom scattering which have opposite parity.

Slow and velocity-tunable beams of metastable He$_2$ by multistage Zeeman deceleration

Metastable helium molecules (He$_2^*$) have been generated by striking a discharge in a supersonic expansion of helium gas from a pulsed valve. When operating the pulsed valve at room temperature, 77K, and 10K, the mean velocity of the supersonic beam was measured to be 1900m/s, 980m/s, and 530m/s, respectively. A 55-stage Zeeman decelerator operated in a phase-stable manner was then used to further reduce the beam velocity and tune it in the range between 100 and 150m/s. The internal-state distribution of the decelerated sample was established by photoionization spectroscopy.

Multistage Zeeman deceleration of metastable neon

A supersonic beam of metastable neon atoms has been decelerated by exploiting the interaction between the magnetic moment of the atoms and time-dependent inhomogeneous magnetic fields in a multistage Zeeman decelerator. Using 91 deceleration solenoids, the atoms were decelerated from an initial velocity of 580m/s to final velocities as low as 105m/s, corresponding to a removal of more than 95% of their initial kinetic energy. The phase-space distribution of the cold, decelerated atoms was characterized by time-of-flight and imaging measurements, from which a temperature of 10mK was obtained in the moving frame of the decelerated sample. In combination with particle-trajectory simulations, these measurements allowed the phase-space acceptance of the decelerator to be quantified. The degree of isotope separation that can be achieved by multistage Zeeman deceleration was also studied by performing experiments with pulse sequences generated for $^{20}$Ne and $^{22}$Ne.
