Multi-Kernel Polar Codes: Concept and Design Principles

In this paper, we propose a new polar code construction by employing kernels of different sizes in the Kronecker product of the transformation matrix, thus generalizing the original construction by Arikan. The proposed multi-kernel polar code allows for more flexibility in terms of the code length, moreover allowing for various new design principles. We describe in detail encoding as well as successive cancellation (SC) decoding and SC list (SCL) decoding, and we provide a novel design method for the frozen set that allows to optimise the performance under list decoding, as opposed to original relability-based code design. Finally, we numerically demonstrate the advantage of multi-kernel polar codes under the new design principles compared to punctured and shortened polar codes.

On Edge Caching in the Presence of Malicious Users

In this paper we investigate the problem of optimal cache placement in the presence of malicious mobile users in heterogeneous networks, where small-cell base stations are equipped with caches in order to reduce the overall backhaul load. In particular the malicious users aim at maximizing the congestion of files at the backhaul, i.e., at maximizing the average backhaul rate. For that adversarial model, we derive the achievable average backhaul rate of the heterogeneous network. Moreover, we study the system performance from a game-theoretic perspective, by naturally considering a zero-sum Stackelberg game between the macro-cell base station and the malicious users. We then thoroughly investigate the system performance in the presence of adversaries and we analyze the influence of the system parameters, such as the network topology and the capabilities of the small-cell base stations, on the overall performance of edge caching at the Stackelberg equilibrium. Our results highlight the impact of the malicious users on the overall caching performance of the network and they furthermore show the importance of an adversary-aware content placement at the small-cell base stations.

On Edge Caching with Secrecy Constraints

In this paper we investigate the problem of optimal cache placement under secrecy constraints in heterogeneous networks, where small-cell base stations are equipped with caches to reduce the overall backhaul load. For two models for eavesdropping attacks, we formally derive the necessary conditions for secrecy and we derive the corresponding achievable backhaul rate. In particular we formulate the optimal caching schemes with secrecy constraints as a convex optimization problem. We then thoroughly investigate the backhaul rate performance of the heterogeneous network with secrecy constraints using numerical simulations. We compare the system performance with and without secrecy constraints and we analyze the influence of the system parameters, such as the file popularity, size of the library files and the capabilities of the small-cell base stations, on the overall performance of our optimal caching strategy. Our results highlight the considerable impact of the secrecy requirements on the overall caching performance of the network.

Strong Secrecy in Pairwise Key Agreement over a Generalized Multiple Access Channel

This paper considers the problem of pairwise key agreement without public communication between three users connected through a generalized multiple access channel (MAC). While two users control the channel inputs, all three users observe noisy outputs from the channel and each pair of users wishes to agree on a secret key hidden from the remaining user. We first develop a "pre-generated" key-agreement scheme based on secrecy codes for the generalized MAC, in which the channel is only used to distribute pre-generated secret keys. We then extend this scheme to include an additional layer of rate-limited secret-key generation by treating the observed channel outputs as induced sources. We characterize inner and outer bounds on the strong secret-key capacity region for both schemes. For a special case of the "pre-generated" scheme, we obtain an exact characterization. We also illustrate with some binary examples that exploiting the generalized nature of the generalized MAC may lead to significantly larger key-agreement rates.

Optimizing MDS Codes for Caching at the Edge

In this paper we investigate the problem of optimal MDS-encoded cache placement at the wireless edge to minimize the backhaul rate in heterogeneous networks. We derive the backhaul rate performance of any caching scheme based on file splitting and MDS encoding and we formulate the optimal caching scheme as a convex optimization problem. We then thoroughly investigate the performance of this optimal scheme for an important heterogeneous network scenario. We compare it to several other caching strategies and we analyze the influence of the system parameters, such as the popularity and size of the library files and the capabilities of the small-cell base stations, on the overall performance of our optimal caching strategy. Our results show that the careful placement of MDS-encoded content in caches at the wireless edge leads to a significant decrease of the load of the network backhaul and hence to a considerable performance enhancement of the network.
