On $D_\ell$-extensions of odd prime degree $\ell$

Generalizing the work of A. Morra and the authors, we give explicit formulas for the Dirichlet series generating function of $D_{\ell}$-extensions of odd prime degree $\ell$ with given quadratic resolvent. Over the course of our proof, we explain connections between our formulas and the Ankeny-Artin-Chowla conjecture, the Ohno-Nakagawa relation for binary cubic forms, and other topics. We also obtain improved upper bounds for the number of such extensions (over Q) of bounded discriminant.

Identities for field extensions generalizing the Ohno-Nakagawa relations

In previous work, Ohno conjectured, and Nakagawa proved, relations between the counting functions of certain cubic fields. These relations may be viewed as complements to the Scholz reflection principle, and Ohno and Nakagawa deduced them as consequences of `extra functional equations' involving the Shintani zeta functions associated to the prehomogeneous vector space of binary cubic forms. In the present paper we generalize their result by proving a similar identity relating certain degree l fields with Galois groups D_l and F_l respectively, for any odd prime l, and in particular we give another proof of the Ohno-Nakagawa relation without appealing to binary cubic forms.

On the existence of large degree Galois representations for fields of small discriminant

Let $L/K$ be a Galois extension of number fields. We prove two lower bounds on the maximum of the degrees of the irreducible complex representations of ${\rm Gal}(L/K)$, the sharper of which is conditional on the Artin Conjecture and the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis. Our bound is nontrivial when $[K : \mathbb{Q}]$ is small and $L$ has small root discriminant, and might be summarized as saying that such fields can't be "too abelian."

An error estimate for counting $S_3$-sextic number fields

In this note, we prove a power-saving remainder term for the function counting $S_3$-sextic number fields. We also give a prediction on the second main term. We also present numerical data on counting functions for $S_3$-sextic number fields. Our data indicates that our prediction is likely to be correct, and it also suggests the existence of additional lower order terms which we have not yet been able to explain.

Dirichlet series associated to cubic fields with given quadratic resolvent

Let k be a quadratic field. We give an explicit formula for the Dirichlet series enumerating cubic fields whose quadratic resolvent field is isomorphic to k. Our work is a sequel to previous work of Cohen and Morra, where such formulas are proved in a more general setting, in terms of sums over characters of certain groups related to ray class groups. In the present paper we carry the analysis further and prove explicit formulas for these Dirichlet series over Q. In a companion paper we do the same for quartic fields having a given cubic resolvent. As an application (not present in the initial version), we compute tables of the number of S_3-sextic fields E with |Disc(E)| < X, for X ranging up to 10^23. An accompanying PARI/GP implementation is available from the second author's website.

Dirichlet series associated to quartic fields with given resolvent

Let $k$ be a cubic field. We give an explicit formula for the Dirichlet series $\sum_K|\Disc(K)|^{-s}$, where the sum is over isomorphism classes of all quartic fields whose cubic resolvent field is isomorphic to $k$. Our work is a sequel to an unpublished preprint of Cohen, Diaz y Diaz, and Olivier, and we include complete proofs of their results so as not to rely on unpublished work. This is a companion to a previous paper where we compute the Dirichlet series associated to cubic fields having a given quadratic resolvent.

Four Perspectives on Secondary Terms in the Davenport-Heilbronn Theorems

This paper is an expanded version of the author's lecture at the Integers Conference 2011. We discuss the secondary terms in the Davenport-Heilbronn theorems on cubic fields and 3-torsion in class groups of quadratic fields. Such secondary terms had been conjectured by Datskovsky-Wright and Roberts, and proofs of these or closely related secondary terms were obtained independently by Bhargava, Shankar, and Tsimerman; Hough; Zhao; and Taniguchi and the author. In this paper we discuss the history of the problem and highlight the diverse methods used to address it.
