Constraining the Charm-Yukawa coupling at the Large Hadron Collider

We present theoretical results for the sensitivity of charm Yukawa coupling measurements in future high-luminosity LHC runs in three channels: Vector Boson Fusion (VBF), W Higgs-strahlung and Z Higgs-strahlung production of a Higgs boson and its subsequent decay into charm quarks. To reduce the overwhelmingly large backgrounds and to reduce false positives, we apply a set of simple kinematic and jet feature cuts and feed neural network data structures of three types; jet features, jet images and particle level features. To facilitate straightforward comparison with experimental studies, we express our results in terms of signal strengths.

YFS Resummation for Future Lepton-Lepton Colliders in SHERPA

We present an implementation of the Yennie--\-Frautschi--\-Suura (YFS) scheme for the all-orders resummation of logarithms from the emission of soft real and virtual photons in processes that are critical for future lepton colliders. They include, in particular, $e^-e^+\to f\bar{f}$ and $e^-e^+\to W^-W^+$, where we validate the results of our implementation, improved with fixed-order corrections, with those obtained from the most precise calculations. We also show, for the first time, results for the Higgs-Strahlungs process, $e^-e^+\to ZH$, in YFS resummation including fixed-order improvements up to order $α^3L^3$.

Constraining SMEFT operators with associated $hγ$ production in Weak Boson Fusion

We consider the associated production of a Higgs boson and a photon in weak boson fusion in the Standard Model (SM) and the Standard Model Effective Theory (SMEFT), with the Higgs boson decaying to a pair of bottom quarks. Analysing events in a cut-based analysis and with multivariate techniques we determine the sensitivity of this process to the bottom-Yukawa coupling in the SM and to possible CP-violation mediated by dimension-6 operators in the SMEFT.

HL-LHC Computing Review: Common Tools and Community Software

Common and community software packages, such as ROOT, Geant4 and event generators have been a key part of the LHC's success so far and continued development and optimisation will be critical in the future. The challenges are driven by an ambitious physics programme, notably the LHC accelerator upgrade to high-luminosity, HL-LHC, and the corresponding detector upgrades of ATLAS and CMS. In this document we address the issues for software that is used in multiple experiments (usually even more widely than ATLAS and CMS) and maintained by teams of developers who are either not linked to a particular experiment or who contribute to common software within the context of their experiment activity. We also give space to general considerations for future software and projects that tackle upcoming challenges, no matter who writes it, which is an area where community convergence on best practice is extremely useful.

Large Effects from Small QCD Instantons: Making Soft Bombs at Hadron Colliders

It is a common belief that the last missing piece of the Standard Model of particles physics was found with the discovery of the Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider. However, there remains a major prediction of quantum tunnelling processes mediated by instanton solutions in the Yang-Mills theory, that is still untested in the Standard Model. The direct experimental observation of instanton-induced processes, which are a consequence of the non-trivial vacuum structure of the Standard Model and of quantum tunnelling in QFT, would be a major breakthrough in modern particle physics. In this paper, we present for the first time a full calculation of QCD instanton-induced processes in proton-proton collisions accounting for quantum corrections due to both initial and final state gluon interactions, a first implementation in an MC event generator as well as a basic strategy how to observe these effects experimentally.

Aspects of pQCD at a 100 TeV future hadron collider

In this publication we consider particle production at a future circular hadron collider with 100 TeV centre of mass energy within the Standard Model, and in particular their QCD aspects. Accurate predictions for these processes pose severe theoretical challenges related to large hierarchies of scales and possible large multiplicities of final state particles. We investigate scaling patterns in multijet-production rates allowing to extrapolate predictions to very high final-state multiplicities. Furthermore, we consider large-area QCD jets and study the expectation for the mean number of subjets to be reconstructed from their constituents and confront these with analytical resummed predictions and with the expectation for boosted hadronic decays of top-quarks and W-bosons. We also discuss the validity of Higgs-Effective-Field-Theory in making predictions for Higgs-boson production in association with jets. Finally, we consider the case of New Physics searches at such a 100 TeV hadron-collider machine and discuss the expectations for corresponding Standard-Model background processes.

Distinguishing b-quark and gluon jets with a tagged b-hadron

Based on the knowledge of the QCD radiation pattern, observables to distinguish jets containing one and two $b$-hadrons are discussed. A simple method is used to combine pairs of the most sensitive observables, girth, number of charged tracks and the energy or momentum fraction of the leading $b$-hadron with respect to the jet, into one discriminator. Their efficiencies, on particle level, are estimated and found to improve the performance and the robustness of the observables in different momentum slices.

Higgs-Strahlung: Merging the NLO Drell-Yan and Loop-Induced 0+1 jet Multiplicities

We analyse the production of a Higgs boson in association with a Z boson at hadron colliders in the Standard Model and some simple extensions. We show how multi-jet merging algorithms at leading and next-to-leading order for the loop-induced gluon fusion and the Drell-Yan like quark-induced processes, respectively, improve the descriptions for various differential distributions, in particular those that involve the production of additional jets. The phenomenological studies focus on two relevant channels of Higgs boson decays, namely $H\rightarrow invisible$ and $H\rightarrow b\bar{b}$. We find sizable and phenomenologically relevant corrections to the transverse momentum and invariant mass distributions for the Higgs boson candidate. Thanks to the large destructive interference for the top Yukawa terms, this process is very sensitive to the magnitude and sign of a possible non-standard top-Higgs coupling. We analyse the impact of this anomalous interaction on distributions and estimate constraints from LHC Run II.

Next-to-leading order QCD predictions for top-quark pair production with up to two jets merged with a parton shower

We present differential cross sections for the production of top-quark pairs in conjunction with up to two jets, computed at next-to leading order in perturbative QCD and consistently merged with a parton shower in the Sherpa+OpenLoops framework. Top quark decays including spin correlation effects are taken into account at leading order accuracy. The calculation yields a unified description of top-pair plus multi-jet production, and detailed results are presented for various key observables at the Large Hadron Collider. A large improvement with respect to the multi-jet merging approach at leading order is found for the total transverse energy spectrum, which plays a prominent role in searches for physics beyond the Standard Model.

Di-Higgs phenomenology: The forgotten channel

Searches for multi-Higgs final states allow to constrain parameters of the SM (or extensions thereof) that directly relate to the mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking. Multi-Higgs production cross sections, however, are small and the phenomenologically accessible final states are challenging to isolate in the busy multi-jet hadron collider environment of the LHC run 2. This makes the necessity to extend the list of potentially observable production mechanisms obvious. Most of the phenomenological analyses in the past have focused on $gg\to hh+jets$; in this paper we study $pp\to t\bar t hh$ at LHC run 2 and find that this channel for $h\to b\bar b$ and semi-leptonic and hadronic top decays has the potential to provide an additional handle to constrain the Higgs trilinear coupling in a global fit at the end of run 2.

Mass Effects in the Higgs-Gluon Coupling: Boosted vs Off-Shell Production

In the upcoming LHC run we will be able to probe the structure ofthe loop--induced Higgs--gluon coupling through kinematics. First, we establish state-of-the-art simulations with up to two jets to next-to-leading order including top mass effects. They allow us to search for deviations from the low-energy limits in boosted Higgs production. In addition, the size of the top mass effects suggests that they should generally be included in Higgs studies at the LHC. Next, we show how off-shell Higgs production with a decay to four leptons is sensitive to the same top mass effects. We compare the potential of both methods based on the same top--Higgs Lagrangian. Finally, we comment on related model assumptions required for a Higgs width measurement.

Precise Higgs-background predictions: merging NLO QCD and squared quark-loop corrections to four-lepton + 0,1 jet production

We present precise predictions for four-lepton plus jets production at the LHC obtained within the fully automated Sherpa+OpenLoops framework. Off-shell intermediate vector bosons and related interferences are consistently included using the complex-mass scheme. Four-lepton plus 0- and 1-jet final states are described at NLO accuracy, and the precision of the simulation is further increased by squared quark-loop NNLO contributions in the gg -> 4l, gg -> 4l+g, gq -> 4l+q, and qq -> 4l+g channels. These NLO and NNLO contributions are matched to the Sherpa parton shower, and the 0- and 1-jet final states are consistently merged using the MEPS@NLO technique. Thanks to Sudakov resummation, the parton shower provides improved predictions and uncertainty estimates for exclusive observables. This is important when jet vetoes or jet bins are used to separate four-lepton final states arising from Higgs decays, diboson production, and top-pair production. Detailed predictions are presented for the ATLAS and CMS H->WW analyses at 8 TeV in the 0- and 1-jet bins. Assessing renormalisation-, factorisation- and resummation-scale uncertainties, which reflect also unknown subleading Sudakov logarithms in jet bins, we find that residual perturbative uncertainties are as small as a few percent.

Merging of matrix elements and parton showers at NLO accuracy

The merging of matrix elements and parton showers is an established calculational tool for the description of multi-jet final states at hadron colliders. These methods have recently been promoted to next-to-leading order accuracy in the description of hard well separated jets. This talk introduces such a method and discusses its application to phenomenologically relevant signal and background processes. The systematic assessment of its theoretical uncertainty is a prime focus.

NLO QCD matrix elements + parton showers in e+e- -> hadrons

We present a new approach to combine multiple NLO parton-level calculations matched to parton showers into a single inclusive event sample. The method provides a description of hard multi-jet configurations at next-to leading order in the perturbative expansion of QCD, and it is supplemented with the all-orders resummed modelling of jet fragmentation provided by the parton shower. The formal accuracy of this technique is discussed in detail, invoking the example of electron-positron annihilation into hadrons. We focus on the effect of renormalisation scale variations in particular. Comparison with experimental data from LEP underlines that this novel formalism describes data with a theoretical accuracy that has hitherto not been achieved in standard Monte Carlo event generators.

A critical appraisal of NLO+PS matching methods

In this publication, uncertainties in and differences between the MC@NLO and POWHEG methods for matching next-to-leading order QCD calculations with parton showers are discussed. Implementations of both algorithms within the event generator Sherpa and based on Catani-Seymour subtraction are employed to assess the impact on a representative selection of observables. In the case of MC@NLO a substantial simplification is achieved by using dipole subtraction terms to generate the first emission. A phase space restriction is employed, which allows to vary in a transparent way the amount of non-singular radiative corrections that are exponentiated. Effects on various observables are investigated, using the production of a Higgs boson in gluon fusion, with or without an associated jet, as a benchmark process. The case of H+jet production is presented for the first time in an NLO+PS matched simulation. Uncertainties due to scale choices and non-perturbative effects are explored in the production of W and Z bosons in association with a jet. Corresponding results are compared to data from the Tevatron and LHC experiments.

Explaining jet quenching with perturbative QCD alone

We present a new formulation of jet quenching in perturbative QCD beyond the eikonal approximation. Multiple scattering in the medium is modelled through infra-red-continued (2 -> 2) scattering matrix elements in QCD and the parton shower describing further emissions. The interplay between these processes is arranged in terms of a formation time constraint such that coherent emissions can be treated consistently. Emerging partons are hadronised by the Lund string model, tuned to describe LEP data in conjunction with the parton shower. Based on this picture we obtain a good description of the nuclear modification factor R_AA at RHIC and LHC.

QCD matrix elements + parton showers: The NLO case

We present a process-independent technique to consistently combine next-to-leading order parton-level calculations of varying jet multiplicity and parton showers. Double counting is avoided by means of a modified truncated shower scheme. This method preserves both the fixed-order accuracy of the parton-level result and the logarithmic accuracy of the parton shower. We discuss the renormalisation and factorisation scale dependence of the approach and present results from an automated implementation in the Sherpa event generator using the test case of W-boson production at the Large Hadron Collider. We observe a dramatic reduction of theoretical uncertainties compared to existing methods which underlines the predictive power of our novel technique.

Automating the POWHEG method in Sherpa

A new implementation of the POWHEG method into the Monte-Carlo event generator Sherpa is presented, focusing on processes with a simple colour structure. Results for a variety of processes, namely e+e- to hadrons, deep-inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering, hadroproduction of single vector bosons and of vector boson pairs as well as the production of Higgs bosons in gluon fusion serve as test cases for the successful realisation. The algorithm is fully automated such that for further processes only virtual matrix elements need to be included.

General-purpose event generators for LHC physics

We review the physics basis, main features and use of general-purpose Monte Carlo event generators for the simulation of proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. Topics included are: the generation of hard-scattering matrix elements for processes of interest, at both leading and next-to-leading QCD perturbative order; their matching to approximate treatments of higher orders based on the showering approximation; the parton and dipole shower formulations; parton distribution functions for event generators; non-perturbative aspects such as soft QCD collisions, the underlying event and diffractive processes; the string and cluster models for hadron formation; the treatment of hadron and tau decays; the inclusion of QED radiation and beyond-Standard-Model processes. We describe the principal features of the ARIADNE, Herwig++, PYTHIA 8 and SHERPA generators, together with the Rivet and Professor validation and tuning tools, and discuss the physics philosophy behind the proper use of these generators and tools. This review is aimed at phenomenologists wishing to understand better how parton-level predictions are translated into hadron-level events as well as experimentalists wanting a deeper insight into the tools available for signal and background simulation at the LHC.

NLO matrix elements and truncated showers

In this publication, an algorithm is presented that combines the ME+PS approach to merge sequences of tree-level matrix elements into inclusive event samples with the POWHEG method, which combines exact next-to-leading order matrix element results with the parton shower. It was developed in parallel to the MENLOPS technique and has been implemented in the event generator Sherpa. The benefits of this approach are exemplified by some first predictions for a number of processes, namely the production of jets in e+ e- annihilation, in deep-inelastic ep scattering, in association with single W, Z or Higgs bosons, and with vector boson pairs at hadron colliders.

The advantages of the method are discussed and the quality of its implementation in Sherpa is exemplified by results for e+e- annihilation into hadrons at LEP, for deep-inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering at HERA, for Drell-Yan lepton-pair production at the Tevatron and for W+W- production at LHC energies.

QCD matrix elements and truncated showers

We derive an improved prescription for the merging of matrix elements with parton showers, extending the CKKW approach. A flavour-dependent phase space separation criterion is proposed. We show that this new method preserves the logarithmic accuracy of the shower, and that the original proposal can be derived from it. One of the main requirements for the method is a truncated shower algorithm. We outline the corresponding Monte Carlo procedures and apply the new prescription to QCD jet production in e+e- collisions and Drell-Yan lepton pair production. Explicit colour information from matrix elements obtained through colour sampling is incorporated in the merging and the influence of different prescriptions to assign colours in the large N_C limit is studied. We assess the systematic uncertainties of the new method.

Simulating W/Z+jets production at the Tevatron

The merging procedure of tree-level matrix elements and the subsequent parton shower as implemented in the new event generator SHERPA will be validated for the example of W/Z+jets production at the Tevatron. Comparisons with results obtained from other approaches and programs and with experimental results clearly show that the merging procedure yields relevant and correct results at both the hadron and parton levels.
