Nonmesonic weak decay spectra of light hypernuclei

The nonmesonic weak decay spectra of light hypernuclei have been evaluated in a systematic way. As theoretical framework we adopt the independent particle shell model with three different one-meson-exchange transition potentials. Good agreement with data is obtained for proton and neutron kinetic energy spectra of Λ4^4_ΛHe, and Λ5^5_ΛHe, when the recoil effect is considered. The coincidence spectra of proton-neutron pairs are also accounted for quite reasonably, but it was not possible to reproduce the data for the neutron-neutron pair spectra. It is suggested that the π+Kπ+K meson-exchange model with soft monopole form factors could be a good starting point for describing the dynamics responsible for the decays of these two hypernuclei. The Λ4^4_ΛH~ spectra are also presented.

Nonmesonic weak decay of Lambda-hypernuclei within independent-particle shell-model

After a short introduction to the nonmesonic weak decay (NMWD) $ΛN\go nN$ of ΛΛ-hypernuclei we discuss the long-standing puzzle on the ratio Γn/ΓpΓ_n/Γ_p, and some recent experimental evidences that signalized towards its final solution. Two versions of the Independent-Particle-Shell-Model (IPSM) are employed to account for the nuclear structure of the final residual nuclei. They are: (a) IPSM-a, where no correlation, except for the Pauli principle, is taken into account, and (b) IPSM-b, where the highly excited hole states are considered to be quasi-stationary and are described by Breit-Wigner distributions, whose widths are estimated from the experimental data. We evaluate the coincidence spectra in Λ4^{4}_ΛHe, Λ5^{5}_ΛHe, Λ12^{12}_ΛC, Λ16^{16}_ΛO, and Λ28^{28}_ΛSi, as a function of the sum of kinetic energies EnN=En+ENE_{nN}=E_n+E_N for N=n,pN=n,p. The recent Brookhaven National Laboratory experiment E788 on Λ4^4_ΛHe, is interpreted within the IPSM . We found that the shapes of all the spectra are basically tailored by the kinematics of the corresponding phase space, depending very weakly on the dynamics, which is gauged here by the one-meson-exchange-potential. In spite of the straightforwardness of the approach a good agreement with data is achieved. This might be an indication that the final-state-interactions and the two-nucleon induced processes are not very important in the decay of this hypernucleus. We have also found that the π+Kπ+K exchange potential with soft vertex-form-factor cutoffs (Λπ≈0.7(Λ_π\approx 0.7 GeV, ΛK≈0.9Λ_K\approx 0.9 GeV), is able to account simultaneously for the available experimental data related to ΓpΓ_p and ΓnΓ_n for Λ4^4_ΛH, Λ4^4_ΛHe, and Λ5^5_ΛHe.

Nonmesonic Weak Decay Spectra and Three-Nucleon Emission

We have evaluated the nonmesonic weak decay spectra within the independent-particle shell-model, and compared them with the recent measurements of: i) the single and double coincidence nucleon spectra in Λ12C{\mathrm{^{12}_ΛC}} performed at KEK, and ii) proton kinetic energy spectra in Λ5He{\mathrm{^{5}_ΛHe}}, Λ7Li{\mathrm{^{7}_ΛLi}}, Λ9Be{\mathrm{^{9}_ΛBe}}, Λ11B{\mathrm{^{11}_ΛB}}, Λ12C{\mathrm{^{12}_ΛC}}, Λ13C{\mathrm{^{13}_ΛC}}, Λ15N{\mathrm{^{15}_ΛN}} and Λ16O{\mathrm{^{16}_ΛO}} done by FINUDA. Based on this comparison we argue that the extraction from the data of the three-body ΛNN→nNNΛNN \rightarrow nNN induced decay rate, as done in these works, could be questionable.

Relationships between nonmesonic-weak-decays in different hypernuclei

Using as a tool the s-wave approximation (sWA), this work demonstrates that the nonmesonic weak decay transition rates ΓnΓ_{n} and ΓpΓ_{p} can be expressed in all hypernuclei up to Λ29^{29}_ΛSi (and very likely in heavier ones too) in the same way as in the s-shell hypernuclei, i.e. as a linear combination of only three elementary transition rates. This finding leads to the analytic prediction that, independently of the transition mechanism, all hypernuclei that are on the stability line (N = Z), i.e. Λ5^5_ΛHe, Λ7^7_ΛLi, Λ9^9_ΛBe, Λ11^{11}_ΛB, Λ13^{13}_ΛC, Λ17^{17}_ΛO, Λ29^{29}_ΛSi, etc should roughly have the same ratio Γn/ΓpΓ_{n}/Γ_{p}, the magnitude of which rapidly increases when one approaches the neutron drip-line (N >> Z), and opposite happens when one goes toward the proton drip-line (N << Z).

Hypernuclear potentials and the pseudoscalar meson exchange contribution

The pieces of the hypernuclear strangeness violating potential due to the pseudoscalar meson exchanges are derived using methods which were successfully applied to hyperon nonleptonic decays. The estimates are tested by comparison with measured hyperon nonleptonic decay amplitudes. All isospin changes ΔI=1/2ΔI=1/2 and ΔI=3/2ΔI=3/2 are included in the derived potential. All calculational methods used are reviewed and described in detail.
