Ballistic Josephson junctions in the presence of generic spin dependent fields

Ballistic Josephson junctions are studied in the presence of a spin-splitting field and spin-orbit coupling. A generic expression for the quasi-classical Green's function is obtained and with its help we analyze several aspects of the proximity effect between a spin-textured normal metal (N) and singlet superconductors (S). In particular, we show that the density of states may show a zero-energy peak which is a generic consequence of the spin-dependent couplings in heterostructures. In addition we also obtain the spin current and the induced magnetic moment in a SNS structure and discuss possible coherent manipulation of the magnetization which results from the coupling between the superconducting phase and the spin degree of freedom. Our theory predicts a spin accumulation at the S/N interfaces, and transverse spin currents flowing perpendicular to the junction interfaces. Some of these findings can be understood in the light of a non-Abelian electrostatics.

Semiclassical quantization of spinning quasiparticles in ballistic Josephson junctions

A Josephson junction made of a generic magnetic material sandwiched between two conventional superconductors is studied in the ballistic semi-classic limit. The spectrum of Andreev bound states is obtained from the single-valuedness of a particle-hole spinor over closed orbits generated by electron-hole reflections at the interfaces between superconducting and normal materials. The semiclassical quantization condition is shown to depend only on the angle mismatch between initial and final spin directions along such closed trajectories. For the demonstration, an Andreev-Wilson loop in the composite position/particle-hole/spin space is constructed, and shown to depend on only two parameters, namely a magnetic phase shift and a local precession axis for the spin. The details of the Andreev-Wilson loop can be extracted via measuring the spin-resolved density of states. A Josephson junction can thus be viewed as an analog computer of closed-path-ordered exponentials.

Electromotive interference in a mechanically oscillating superconductor: generalized Josephson relations and self-sustained oscillations of a torsional SQUID

We consider the superconducting phase in a moving superconductor and show that it depends on the displacement flux. Generalized constitutive relations between the phase of a superconducting interference device (SQUID) and the position of the oscillating loop are then established. In particular, we show that the Josephson current and voltage depend on both the SQUID position and velocity. The two proposed relativistic corrections to the Josephson relations come from the macroscopic displacement of a quantum condensate according to the (non-inertial) Galilean covariance of the Schrödinger equation, and the kinematic displacement of the quasi-classical interfering path. In particular, we propose an alternative demonstration for the London rotating superconductor effect (also known as the London momentum) using the covariance properties of the Schrödinger equation. As an illustration, we show how these electromotive effects can induce self-sustained oscillations of a torsional SQUID, when the entire loop oscillates due to an applied dc-current.

Theory of the spin-galvanic effect and the anomalous phase-shift $φ_{0}$ in superconductors and Josephson junctions with intrinsic spin-orbit coupling

Due to the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) an electric current flowing in a normal metal or semiconductor can induce a bulk magnetic moment. This effect is known as the Edelstein (EE) or magneto-electric effect. Similarly, in a bulk superconductor a phase gradient may create a finite spin density. The inverse effect, also known as the spin-galvanic effect, corresponds to the creation of a supercurrent by an equilibrium spin polarization. Here, by exploiting the analogy between a linear-in-momentum SOC and a background SU(2) gauge field, we develop a quasiclassical transport theory to deal with magneto-electric effects in superconducting structures. For bulk superconductors this approach allows us to easily reproduce and generalize a number of previously known results. For Josephson junctions we establish a direct connection between the inverse EE and the appearance of an anomalous phase-shift $φ_{0}$ in the current-phase relation. In particular we show that $φ_{0}$ is proportional to the equilibrium spin-current in the weak link. We also argue that our results are valid generically, beyond the particular case of linear-in-momentum SOC. The magneto-electric effects discussed in this study may find applications in the emerging field of coherent spintronics with superconductors.

Magneto-electric coupling in a two-dimensional ballistic Josephson junction with in-plane magnetic texture

We study a Josephson junction made with a spin-textured bridge, when both Rashba and Zeeman interactions combine to generate a magneto-electric coupling between the superconducting current and the in-plane magnetic texture in the normal region. In particular, we unambiguously obtain the so-called anomalous current-phase relation $j=j_{c}\sinφ+j_{a}\cosφ$ in a two-dimensional ballistic Josephson junction close to the critical temperature of the heterostructure, when an anomalous current $j_{a}\neq0$ subsists even at zero phase-difference between the superconductors, and is responsible for the coupling between the magnetic and electric degrees of freedom of the junction. The anomalous magneto-electric current is due to the combination of the chirality of the propagating modes and the anisotropy of the in-plane magnetic texture.

Transport equations for superconductors in the presence of spin interaction

Quasi-classical theory of superconductivity provides a powerful and yet simple description of the superconductivity phenomenology. In particular, the Eilenberger and Usadel equations provide a neat simplification of the description of the superconducting state in the presence of disorder and electromagnetic interaction. However, the modern aspects of superconductivity require a correct description of the spin interaction as well. Here, we generalize the transport equations of superconductivity in order to take into account space-time dependent electromagnetic and spin interactions on equal footing. Using a gauge-covariant Wigner transformation for the Green-Gor'kov correlation functions, we establish the correspondence between the Dyson-Gor'kov equation and the quasi-classical transport equation in the time-dependent phase-space. We give the expressions for the gauge-covariant current and charge densities (quasi-particle, electric and spin) in the transport formulation. The generalized Eilenberger and Usadel limits of the transport equation are given, too. This study is devoted to the formal derivation of the equations of motion in the electromagnetic plus spin plus particle-hole space. The studies of some specific systems are postponed to future works.

Effects of non-equilibrium noise on a quantum memory encoded in Majorana zero modes

In order to increase the coherence time of topological quantum memories in systems with Majorana zero modes, it has recently been proposed to encode the logical qubit states in non-local Majorana operators which are immune to localized excitations involving the unpaired Majorana modes. In this encoding, a logical error only happens when the quasi-particles, subsequent to their excitation, travel a distance of the order of the spacing between the Majorana modes. Here, we study the decay time of a quantum memory encoded in a clean topological nanowire interacting with an environment with a particular emphasis on the propagation of the quasi-particles above the gap. We show that the non-local encoding does not provide a significantly longer coherence time than the local encoding. In particular, the characteristic speed of propagation is of the order of the Fermi velocity of the nanowire and not given by the much slower group velocity of quasi-particles which are excited just above the gap.
