A damage model for granite subjected to quasi-static contact loading

An anisotropic damage model is employed in order to simulate the fracture pattern of Bohus granite under quasi-static spherical indentation loading. The chosen damage description is added to the previously employed Drucker-Prager plasticity model with variable dilation angle. The resulting constitutive model is implemented to simulate the behavior of Bohus granite under indentation up to the load capacity of the material. The initial fragmentation, corresponding to the first small load-drop in the force-penetration curve, is likely due to the high radial tensile stress state at or close to the contact boundary. Both predicted fracture pattern and force-penetration results from the numerical simulation are compared to experimental data and a good agreement is found. The variability in tensile strength of the material is included in the chosen damage model by taking advantage of Weibull statistics. In this work, it is suggested that indentation test results by themselves may be used to calibrate the statistical distribution of tensile strength at small size scales such as in indentation applications.

Efficient binary tomographic reconstruction

Tomographic reconstruction of a binary image from few projections is considered. A novel {\em heuristic} algorithm is proposed, the central element of which is a nonlinear transformation $ψ(p)=\log(p/(1-p))$ of the probability $p$ that a pixel of the sought image be 1-valued. It consists of backprojections based on $ψ(p)$ and iterative corrections. Application of this algorithm to a series of artificial test cases leads to exact binary reconstructions, (i.e recovery of the binary image for each single pixel) from the knowledge of projection data over a few directions. Images up to $10^6$ pixels are reconstructed in a few seconds. A series of test cases is performed for comparison with previous methods, showing a better efficiency and reduced computation times.

Material-independent crack arrest statistics: Application to indentation experiments

An extensive experimental study of indentation and crack arrest statistics is presented for four different brittle materials (alumina, silicon carbide, silicon nitride, glass). Evidence is given that the crack length statistics can be described by a universal (i.e. material independent) distribution. The latter directly derives from results obtained when modeling crack propagation as a depinning phenomenon. Crack arrest (or effective toughness) statistics appears to be fully characterized by two parameters, namely, an asymptotic crack length (or macroscopic toughness) value and a power law size dependent width. The experimental knowledge of the crack arrest statistics at one given scale thus gives access to its knowledge at all scales.

Digital Image Correlation used to Analyze the Multiaxial Behavior of Rubber-like Materials

We present an experimental approach to discriminate models describing the mechanical behavior of polymeric materials. A biaxial loading condition is obtained in a multiaxial testing machine. An evaluation of the displacement field obtained by digital image correlation allows us to evaluate the heterogeneous strain field observed during these tests. We focus on the particular case of hyper-elastic models to simulate the behavior of a rubber-like material. Different expressions of hyper-elastic potential are used to model experiments under uniaxial and biaxial loading conditions.

Digital Image Correlation: From Displacement Measurement to Identification of Elastic Properties - A Review

The current development of digital image correlation, whose displacement uncertainty is well below the pixel value, enables one to better characterise the behaviour of materials and the response of structures to external loads. A general presentation of the extraction of displacement fields from the knowledge of pictures taken at different instants of an experiment is given. Different strategies can be followed to achieve a sub-pixel uncertainty. From these measurements, new identification procedures are devised making use of full-field measures. A priori or a posteriori routes can be followed. They are illustrated on the analysis of a Brazilian test.

Identification of a Damage Law by Using Full-Field Displacement Measurements

It is proposed to identify damage variables and their growth with loading in two dimensions by only using full-field displacement measurements. The equilibrium gap method is used to estimate the damage field during a biaxial experiment on a sample made of a composite material. From the analysis of a sequence of measurements, a proposed form of constitutive law is tested and identified. The emphasis is put on the methodology that can be applied to a vast class of materials.
