Impact of fully coherent energy loss on heavy meson production in pA collisions

Hadron production in proton-nucleus (pA) collisions was previously shown to be suppressed by medium-induced fully coherent energy loss (FCEL). We show that the quenching of $D$ and $B$ mesons in pPb collisions at the LHC due solely to FCEL is, at least, on par with other nuclear effects such as gluon shadowing or saturation. This is consistent with previous findings for both quarkonium and light hadron production in pA collisions, emphasising that FCEL effects need to be included for a reliable understanding of hadron production measurements in pA collisions.

Nuclear $p_\perp$-broadening of Drell-Yan and quarkonium production from SPS to LHC

The nuclear $p_\perp$-broadening of Drell-Yan and quarkonium ($J/ψ$, $Υ$) production in $π$A and pA collisions is investigated. The world data follow a simple scaling from SPS to LHC energies, once the process-dependent color factors are properly taken into account, which allows for the extraction of the transport coefficient in cold nuclear matter. We find that $\hat{q}(x)\propto x^{-α}$ with $α=0.25$-$0.30$. The magnitude of the transport coefficient at $x=10^{-2}$ is $\hat{q}_0=0.051$ GeV$^2$/fm and $\hat{q}_0=0.075$ GeV$^2$/fm, whether $Q\bar{Q}$ pairs are assumed to be produced as color octet or color singlet states, respectively. The relation between nuclear broadening data and the (CT14) gluon density is also investigated.

Quenching of light hadron spectra in pA collisions from fully coherent energy loss

We single out the role of fully coherent induced gluon radiation on light hadron production in pA collisions. The effect has an interesting color structure, as the induced radiation depends on the global color charge of the partonic subprocess final state. Baseline predictions for light hadron nuclear suppression in pPb collisions at the LHC are provided, taking into account only the effect of fully coherent energy loss, which proves of the same order of magnitude as gluon shadowing or saturation. This underlines the need to include fully coherent energy loss in phenomenological studies of hadron production in pA collisions.

Coherent medium-induced gluon radiation in hard forward $1\to 1$ partonic processes

We revisit the medium-induced coherent radiation associated to hard and forward (small angle) scattering of an energetic parton through a nuclear medium. We consider all $1\to 1$ hard forward processes ($g \to g$, $q \to q$, $q \to g$ and $g \to q$), and derive the energy spectrum of induced coherent radiation rigorously to all orders in the opacity expansion and for the specific case of a Coulomb scattering potential. We obtain a simple general formula for the induced coherent spectrum, which encompasses the results corresponding to previously known special cases.

Scaling properties of inclusive W$^\pm$ production at hadron colliders

We consider the hadroproduction of W gauge bosons in their leptonic decay mode. Starting from the leading-order expressions, we show that by defining a suitable scaling variable the centre-of-mass dependence of the cross sections at the LHC energies can be essentially described by a simple power law. The scaling exponent is directly linked to the small-$x$ behaviour of parton distribution functions (PDF) which, at the high virtualities involved in W production, is largely dictated by QCD evolution equations. This entails a particularly simple scaling law for the lepton charge asymmetry and also predicts that measurements in different collision systems (p-p, p-$\bar{\rm p}$, p-Pb Pb-Pb) are straightforwardly related. The expectations are compared with the existing data and a very good overall agreement is observed. It is shown that the PDF uncertainty in certain cross-section ratios between nearby centre-of-mass energies can be significantly reduced by taking the ratios at fixed value of scaling variable instead of fixed rapidity.

Quarkonium suppression from coherent energy loss in fixed-target experiments using LHC beams

Quarkonium production in proton-nucleus collisions is a powerful tool to disentangle cold nuclear matter effects. A model based on coherent energy loss is able to explain the available quarkonium suppression data in a broad range of rapidities, from fixed-target to collider energies, suggesting cold energy loss to be the dominant effect in quarkonium suppression in p-A collisions. This could be further tested in a high-energy fixed-target experiment using a proton or nucleus beam. The nuclear modification factors of J/$ψ$ and $Υ$ as a function of rapidity are computed in p-A collisions at $\sqrt{s}=114.6$ GeV, and in p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s}=72$ GeV. These center-of-mass energies correspond to the collision on fixed-target nuclei of 7 TeV protons and 2.76 TeV lead nuclei available at the LHC.

Quarkonium suppression in heavy-ion collisions from coherent energy loss in cold nuclear matter

The effect of parton energy loss in cold nuclear matter on the suppression of quarkonia (J/psi, Upsilon) in heavy-ion collisions is investigated, by extrapolating a model based on coherent radiative energy loss recently shown to describe successfully J/psi and Upsilon suppression in proton-nucleus collisions. Model predictions in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC (Au-Au, Cu-Cu, and Cu-Au) and LHC (Pb-Pb) show a sizable suppression arising from the sole effect of energy loss in cold matter. This effect should thus be considered in order to get a reliable baseline for cold nuclear matter effects in quarkonium suppression in heavy-ion collisions, in view of disentangling hot from cold nuclear effects.

Centrality and pT dependence of J/psi suppression in proton-nucleus collisions from parton energy loss

The effects of parton energy loss and pT-broadening in cold nuclear matter on the pT and centrality dependence, at various rapidities, of J/psi suppression in p-A collisions are investigated. Calculations are systematically compared to E866 and PHENIX measurements. The very good agreement between the data and the theoretical expectations further supports pT-broadening and the associated medium-induced parton energy loss as dominant effects in J/psi suppression in high-energy p-A collisions. Predictions for J/psi (and Upsilon) suppression in p-Pb collisions at the LHC are given.

preprint2012arXiv

J/psi suppression in p-A collisions from parton energy loss in cold QCD matter

The effects of energy loss in cold nuclear matter on J/psi suppression in p-A collisions are studied. A simple model based on first principles and depending on a single free parameter is able to reproduce J/psi suppression data at large xF and at various center-of-mass energies. These results strongly support energy loss as a dominant effect in quarkonium suppression. They also give some hint on its hadroproduction mechanism suggesting color neutralization to happen on long time-scales. Predictions for J/psi and Upsilon suppression in p-Pb collisions at the LHC are made.

Hadronic single inclusive kt distributions inside one jet beyond MLLA

The hadronic kt-spectrum inside one jet is determined including corrections of relative magnitude sqrt{alpha_s} with respect to the Modified Leading Logarithmic Approximation (MLLA), at and beyond the limiting spectrum (assuming an infrared cut-off Q_0 = Lambda_QCD and Q_0 not = Lambda_QCD). The agreement between our results and preliminary measurements by the CDF collaboration is impressive, much better than at MLLA, pointing out very small overall non-perturbative contributions.
