Control problems with differential constraints of higher order

We consider cost minimising control problems, in which the dynamical system is constrained by higher order differential equations of Euler-Lagrange type. Following ideas from a previous paper by the first and the third author, we prove that a curve of controls $u_o(t)$ and a set of initial conditions $σ_o$ gives an optimal solution for a control problem of the considered type if and only if an appropriate double integral is greater than or equal to zero along any homotopy $(u(t, s), σ(s))$ of control curves and initial data starting from $u_o(t) = u(t, 0)$ and $σ_o = σ(0)$. This property is called "Principle of Minimal Labour". From this principle we derive a generalisation of the classical Pontryagin Maximum Principle that holds under higher order differential constraints of Euler-Lagrange type and without the hypothesis of fixed initial data.

Branching structures emerging from a continuous optimal transport model

Recently a Dynamic-Monge-Kantorovich formulation of the PDE-based $L^1$-optimal transport problem was presented. The model considers a diffusion equation enforcing the balance of the transported masses with a time-varying conductivity that volves proportionally to the transported flux. In this paper we present an extension of this model that considers a time derivative of the conductivity that grows as a power law of the transport flux with exponent $β>0$. A sub-linear growth ($0<β<1$) penalizes the flux intensity and promotes distributed transport, with equilibrium solutions that are reminiscent of Congested Transport Problems. On the contrary, a super-linear growth ($β>1$) favors flux intensity and promotes concentrated transport, leading to the emergence of steady-state "singular" and "fractal-like" configurations that resemble those of Branched Transport Problems. We derive a numerical discretization of the proposed model that is accurate, efficient, and robust for a wide range of scenarios. For $β>1$ the numerical model is able to reproduce highly irregular and fractal-like formations without any a-priory structural assumption.

Approximate Inertial Manifold Approach to Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamics

In this paper a reaction-diffusion type equation is the starting point for setting up a genuine thermodynamic reduction, i.e. involving a finite number of parameters or collective variables, of the initial system. This program is carried over by firstly operating a finite Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction of the cited reaction-diffusion equation when reformulated as a variational problem. In this way we gain an approximate finite-dimensional o.d.e. description of the initial system which preserves the gradient structure of the original one and that is similar to the approximate inertial manifold description of a p.d.e. introduced by Temam and coworkers. Secondly, we resort to the stochastic version of the o.d.e., taking into account in this way the uncertainty (loss of information) introduced with the above mentioned reduction. We study this reduced stochastic system using classical tools from large deviations, viscosity solutions and weak KAM Hamilton-Jacobi theory. In the last part we highlight some essential similarities existing between our approach and the comprehensive treatment non equilibrium thermodynamics given by Jona-Lasinio and coworkers. The starting point of their axiomatic theory --motivated by large deviations description of lattice gas models-- of systems in a stationary non equilibrium state is precisely a conservation/balance law which is akin to our simple model of reaction-diffusion equation.

Swim-like motion of bodies immersed in an ideal fluid

The connection between swimming and control theory is attracting increasing attention in the recent literature. Starting from an idea of Alberto Bressan [7] we study the system of a planar body whose position and shape are described by a finite number of parameters, and is immersed in a 2-dimensional ideal and in-compressible fluid in terms of gauge field on the space of shapes. We focus on a class of deformations measure preserving which are diffeomeorphisms whose existence is ensured by the Riemann Mapping Theorem. We face a crucial problem: the pres-ence of possible non vanishing initial impulse. If the body starts with zero initial impulse we recover the results present in literature (Marsden, Munnier and oths). If instead the body starts with an initial impulse different from zero, the swimmer can self-propel in almost any direction if it can undergo shape changes without any bound on their velocity. This interesting observation, together with the analysis of the controllability of this system, seems innovative.

Chain recurrence, chain transitivity, Lyapunov functions and rigidity of Lagrangian submanifolds of optical hypersurfaces

The aim of this paper is twofold. On the one hand, we discuss the notions of strong chain recurrence and strong chain transitivity for flows on metric spaces, together with their characterizations in terms of rigidity properties of Lipschitz Lyapunov functions. This part extends to flows some recent results for homeomorphisms of Fathi and Pageault. On the other hand, we use these characterisations to revisit the proof of a theorem of Paternain, Polterovich and Siburg concerning the inner rigidity of a Lagrangian submanifold $Λ$ contained in an optical hypersurface of a cotangent bundle, under the assumption that the dynamics on $Λ$ is strongly chain recurrent. We also prove an outer rigidity result for such a Lagrangian submanifold $Λ$, under the stronger assumption that the dynamics on $Λ$ is strongly chain transitive.

Finite Mechanical Proxies for a Class of Reducible Continuum Systems

We present the exact finite reduction of a class of nonlinearly perturbed wave equations, based on the Amann-Conley-Zehnder paradigm. By solving an inverse eigenvalue problem, we establish an equivalence between the spectral finite description derived from A-C-Z and a discrete mechanical model, a well definite finite spring-mass system. By doing so, we decrypt the abstract information encoded in the finite reduction and obtain a physically sound proxy for the continuous problem.

Finite reduction and Morse index estimates for mechanical systems

A simple version of exact finite dimensional reduction for the variational setting of mechanical systems is presented. It is worked out by means of a thorough global version of the implicit function theorem for monotone operators. Moreover, the Hessian of the reduced function preserves all the relevant information of the original one, by Schur's complement, which spontaneously appears in this context. Finally, the results are straightforwardly extended to the case of a Dirichlet problem on a bounded domain.
