Lower semicontinuity and relaxation for free discontinuity functionals with non-standard growth

A lower semicontinuity result and a relaxation formula for free discontinuity functionals with non-standard growth in the bulk energy are provided. Our analysis is based on a non-trivial adaptation of the blow-up (Ambrosio 1994) and of the global method for relaxation (Bouchitté et al. 1998) to the setting of generalized special function of bounded variation with Orlicz growth. Key tools developed in this paper are an integral representation result and a Poincaré inequality under non-standard growth.

Mean field sparse optimal control of systems with additive white noise

We analyze the problem of controlling a multi-agent system with additive white noise through parsimonious interventions on a selected subset of the agents (leaders). For such a controlled system with a SDE constraint, we introduce a rigorous limit process towards an infinite dimensional optimal control problem constrained by the coupling of a system of ODE for the leaders with a McKean-Vlasov-type SDE, governing the dynamics of the prototypical follower. The latter is, under some assumptions on the distribution of the initial data, equivalent with a (nonlinear parabolic) PDE-ODE system. The derivation of the limit mean-field optimal control problem is achieved by linking the mean-field limit of the governing equations together with the $Γ$-limit of the cost functionals for the finite dimensional problems.

On the wave equation on moving domains: regularity, energy balance and application to dynamic debonding

We revisit some issues about existence and regularity for the wave equation in noncylindrical domains. Using a method of diffeomorphisms, we show how, through increasing regularity assumptions, the existence of weak solutions, their improved regularity and an energy balance can be derived. As an application, we give a rigorous definition of dynamic energy release rate density for some problems of debonding, and we formulate a proper notion of solution for such problems. We discuss the consistence of such formulation with previous ones, given in literature for particular cases.

The notions of Inertial Balanced Viscosity and Inertial Virtual Viscosity solution for rate-independent systems

The notion of Inertial Balanced Viscosity (IBV) solution to rate-independent evolutionary processes is introduced. Such solutions are characterized by an energy balance where a suitable, rate-dependent, dissipation cost is optimized at jump times. The cost is reminiscent of the limit effect of small inertial terms. Therefore, this notion proves to be a suitable one to describe the asymptotic behavior of evolutions of mechanical systems with rate-independent dissipation in the limit of vanishing inertia and viscosity. It is indeed proved, in finite dimension, that these evolutions converge to IBV solutions. If the viscosity operator is neglected, or has a nontrivial kernel, the weaker notion of Inertial Virtual Viscosity (IVV) solutions is introduced, and the analogous convergence result holds. Again in a finite-dimensional context, it is also shown that IBV and IVV solutions can be obtained via a natural extension of the Minimizing Movements algorithm, where the limit effect of inertial terms is taken into account.

A derivation of Griffith functionals from discrete finite-difference models

We analyze a finite-difference approximation of a functional of Ambrosio-Tortorelli type in brittle fracture, in the discrete-to-continuum limit. In a suitable regime between the competing scales, namely if the discretization step $δ$ is smaller than the ellipticity parameter $\varepsilon$, we show the $Γ$-convergence of the model to the Griffith functional, containing only a term enforcing Dirichlet boundary conditions and no $L^p$ fidelity term. Restricting to two dimensions, we also address the case in which a (linearized) constraint of non-interpenetration of matter is added in the limit functional, in the spirit of a recent work by Chambolle, Conti and Francfort.

An alternate Lagrangian scheme for spatially inhomogeneous evolutionary games

An alternate Lagrangian scheme at discrete times is proposed for the approximation of a nonlinear continuity equation arising as a mean-field limit of spatially inhomogeneous evolutionary games, describing the evolution of a system of spatially distributed agents with strategies, or labels, whose payoff depends also on the current position of the agents. The scheme is Lagrangian, as it traces the evolution of position and labels along characteristics and is alternate, as it consists of the following two steps: first the distribution of strategies or labels is updated according to a best performance criterion and then this is used by the agents to evolve their position. A general convergence result is provided in the space of probability measures. In the special cases of replicator-type systems and reversible Markov chains, variants of the scheme, where the explicit step in the evolution of the labels is replaced by an implicit one, are also considered and convergence results are provided.

Functionals defined on piecewise rigid functions: Integral representation and $Γ$-convergence

We analyze integral representation and $Γ$-convergence properties of functionals defined on \emph{piecewise rigid functions}, i.e., functions which are piecewise affine on a Caccioppoli partition where the derivative in each component is constant and lies in a set without rank-one connections. Such functionals account for interfacial energies in the variational modeling of materials which locally show a rigid behavior. Our results are based on localization techniques for $Γ$-convergence and a careful adaption of the global method for relaxation (Bouchitté et al. 1998, 2001) to this new setting, under rather general assumptions. They constitute a first step towards the investigation of lower semicontinuity, relaxation, and homogenization for free-discontinuity problems in spaces of (generalized) functions of bounded deformation.

Linearly constrained evolutions of critical points and an application to cohesive fractures

We introduce a novel constructive approach to define time evolution of critical points of an energy functional. Our procedure, which is different from other more established approaches based on viscosity approximations in infinite dimension, is prone to efficient and consistent numerical implementations, and allows for an existence proof under very general assumptions. We consider in particular rather nonsmooth and nonconvex energy functionals, provided the domain of the energy is finite dimensional. Nevertheless, in the infinite dimensional case study of a cohesive fracture model, we prove a consistency theorem of a discrete-to-continuum limit. We show that a quasistatic evolution can be indeed recovered as a limit of evolutions of critical points of finite dimensional discretizations of the energy, constructed according to our scheme. To illustrate the results, we provide several numerical experiments both in one and two dimensions. These agree with the crack initiation criterion, which states that a fracture appears only when the stress overcomes a certain threshold, depending on the material.

On global and local minimizers of prestrained thin elastic rods

We study the stable configurations of a thin three-dimensional weakly prestrained rod subject to a terminal load as the thickness of the section vanishes. By $Γ$-convergence we derive a one-dimensional limit theory and show that isolated local minimizers of the limit model can be approached by local minimizers of the three-dimensional model. In the case of isotropic materials and for two-layers prestrained three-dimensional models the limit energy further simplifies to that of a Kirchhoff rod-model of an intrinsically curved beam. In this case we study the limit theory and investigate global and/or local stability of straight and helical configurations. Through some simple simulations we finally compare our results with real experiments.

Chirality transitions in frustrated $S^{2}$-valued spin systems

We study the discrete-to-continuum limit of the helical XY $S^{2}$-spin system on the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^{2}$. We scale the interaction parameters in order to reduce the model to a spin chain in the vicinity of the Landau-Lifschitz point and we prove that at the same energy scaling under which the $S^{1}$-model presents scalar chirality transitions, the cost of every vectorial chirality transition is now zero. In addition we show that if the energy of the system is modified penalizing the distance of the $S^{2}$ field from a finite number of copies of $S^{1}$, it is still possible to prove the emergence of nontrivial (possibly trace dependent) chirality transitions.

Mean-Field Pontryagin Maximum Principle

We derive a Maximum Principle for optimal control problems with constraints given by the coupling of a system of ODEs and a PDE of Vlasov-type. Such problems arise naturally as $Γ$-limits of optimal control problems subject to ODE constraints, modeling, for instance, external interventions on crowd dynamics. We obtain these first-order optimality conditions in the form of Hamiltonian flows in the Wasserstein space of probability measures with forward-backward boundary conditions with respect to the first and second marginals, respectively. In particular, we recover the equations and their solutions by means of a constructive procedure, which can be seen as the mean-field limit of the Pontryagin Maximum Principle applied to the discrete optimal control problems, under a suitable scaling of the adjoint variables.

Frustrated ferromagnetic spin chains: a variational approach to chirality transitions

We study the energy per particle of a one-dimensional ferromagnetic/anti-ferromagnetic frustrated spin chain with nearest and next-to-nearest interactions close to the helimagnet/ferromagnet transition point as the number of particles diverges. We rigorously prove the emergence of chiral ground states and we compute, by performing the Gamma-limits of proper renormalizations and scalings, the energy for a chirality transition.

Linearly contrained nonsmooth and nonconvex minimization

Motivated by variational models in continuum mechanics, we introduce a novel algorithm to perform nonsmooth and nonconvex minimizations with linear constraints in Euclidean spaces. We show how this algorithm is actually a natural generalization of the well-known non-stationary augmented Lagrangian method for convex optimization. The relevant features of this approach are its applicability to a large variety of nonsmooth and nonconvex objective functions, its guaranteed convergence to critical points of the objective energy independently of the choice of the initial value, and its simplicity of implementation. In fact, the algorithm results in a nested double loop iteration. In the inner loop an augmented Lagrangian algorithm performs an adaptive finite number of iterations on a fixed quadratic and strictly convex perturbation of the objective energy, depending on a parameter which is adapted by the external loop. To show the versatility of this new algorithm, we exemplify how it can be used for computing critical points in inverse free-discontinuity variational models, such as the Mumford-Shah functional, and, by doing so, we also derive and analyze new iterative thresholding algorithms.

Q-tensor continuum energies as limits of head-to-tail-symmetric spin systems

We consider a class of spin-type discrete systems and analyze their continuum limit as the lattice spacing goes to zero. Under standard coerciveness and growth assumptions together with an additional head-to-tail symmetry condition, we observe that this limit can be conveniently written as a functional in the space of $Q$-tensors. We further characterize the limit energy density in several cases (both in 2 and 3 dimensions). In the planar case we also develop a second-order theory and we derive gradient or concentration-type models according to the chosen scaling.
