Bounding Violations of the Weak Gravity Conjecture

The black hole weak gravity conjecture (WGC) is a set of linear inequalities on the four-derivative corrections to Einstein--Maxwell theory. Remarkably, in four dimensions, these combinations appear in the $2 \to 2$ photon amplitudes, leading to the hope that the conjecture might be supported using dispersion relations. However, the presence of a pole arising in the forward limit due to graviton exchange greatly complicates the use of such arguments. In this paper, we apply recently developed numerical techniques to handle the graviton pole, and we find that standard dispersive arguments are not strong enough to imply the black hole WGC. Specifically, under a fairly typical set of assumptions, including weak coupling of the EFT and Regge boundedness, a small violation of the black hole WGC is consistent with unitarity and causality. We quantify the size of this violation, which vanishes in the limit where gravity decouples and also depends logarithmically on an infrared cutoff. We discuss the meaning of these bounds in various scenarios. We also implement a method for bounding amplitudes without manifestly positive spectral densities, which could be applied to any system of non-identical states, and we use it to improve bounds on the EFT of pure photons in absence of gravity.

Homaloidal hypersurfaces and hypersurfaces with vanishing Hessian

We prove the existence of various families of irreducible homaloidal hypersurfaces in projective space $\mathbb P^ r$, for all $r\geq 3$. Some of these are families of homaloidal hypersurfaces whose degrees are arbitrarily large as compared to the dimension of the ambient projective space. The existence of such a family solves a question that has naturally arisen from the consideration of the classes of homaloidal hypersurfaces known so far. The result relies on a fine analysis of dual hypersurfaces to certain scroll surfaces. We also introduce an infinite family of determinantal homaloidal hypersurfaces based on a certain degeneration of a generic Hankel matrix. These examples fit non--classical versions of de Jonquières transformations. As a natural counterpoint, we broaden up aspects of the theory of Gordan--Noether hypersurfaces with vanishing Hessian determinant, bringing over some more precision to the present knowledge.

Weak Dirichlet processes and generalized martingale problems

In this paper we explain how the notion of ''weak Dirichlet process'' is the suitable generalization of the one of semimartingale with jumps. For such a process we provide a unique decomposition which is new also for semimartingales: in particular we introduce ''characteristics'' for weak Dirichlet processes. We also introduce a weak concept (in law) of finite quadratic variation. We investigate a set of new useful chain rules and we discuss a general framework of (possibly path-dependent with jumps) martingale problems with a set of examples of SDEs with jumps driven by a distributional drift.

Crandall-Lions Viscosity Solutions for Path-Dependent PDEs: The Case of Heat Equation

We address our interest to the development of a theory of viscosity solutions {à} la Crandall-Lions for path-dependent partial differential equations (PDEs), namely PDEs in the space of continuous paths C([0, T ]; R^d). Path-dependent PDEs can play a central role in the study of certain classes of optimal control problems, as for instance optimal control problems with delay. Typically, they do not admit a smooth solution satisfying the corresponding HJB equation in a classical sense, it is therefore natural to search for a weaker notion of solution. While other notions of generalized solution have been proposed in the literature, the extension of the Crandall-Lions framework to the path-dependent setting is still an open problem. The question of uniqueness of the solutions, which is the more delicate issue, will be based on early ideas from the theory of viscosity solutions and a suitable variant of Ekeland's variational principle. This latter is based on the construction of a smooth gauge-type function, where smooth is meant in the horizontal/vertical (rather than Fr{é}chet) sense. In order to make the presentation more readable, we address the path-dependent heat equation, which in particular simplifies the smoothing of its natural "candidate" solution. Finally, concerning the existence part, we provide a new proof of the functional It{ô} formula under general assumptions, extending earlier results in the literature.

About classical solutions of the path-dependent heat equation

This paper investigates two existence theorems for the path-dependent heat equation, which is the Kolmogorov equation related to the window Brownian motion, considered as a C([--T, 0])-valued process. We concentrate on two general existence results of its classical solutions related to different classes of final conditions: the first one is given by a cylindrical non necessarily smooth r.v., the second one is a smooth generic functional.

The identification problem for BSDEs driven by possibly non quasi-left-continuous random measures

In this paper we focus on the so called identification problem for a backward SDE driven by a continuous local martingale and a possibly non quasi-left-continuous random measure. Supposing that a solution (Y, Z, U) of a backward SDE is such that $Y(t) = v(t, X(t))$ where X is an underlying process and v is a deterministic function, solving the identification problem consists in determining Z and U in term of v. We study the over-mentioned identification problem under various sets of assumptions and we provide a family of examples including the case when X is a non-semimartingale jump process solution of an SDE with singular coefficients.

BSDEs, c{à}dl{à}g martingale problems and orthogonalisation under basis risk

The aim of this paper is to introduce a new formalism for the deterministic analysis associated with backward stochastic differential equations driven by general c{à}dl{à}g martingales. When the martingale is a standard Brownian motion, the natural deterministic analysis is provided by the solution of a semilinear PDE of parabolic type. A significant application concerns the hedging problem under basis risk of a contingent claim $g(X\_T,S\_T)$, where $S$ (resp. $X$) is an underlying price of a traded (resp. non-traded but observable) asset, via the celebrated F{ö}llmer-Schweizer decomposition. We revisit the case when the couple of price processes $(X,S)$ is a diffusion and we provide explicit expressions when $(X,S)$ is an exponential of additive processes.

Doubly probabilistic representation for the stochastic porous media type equation

The purpose of the present paper consists in proposing and discussing a doubly probabilistic representation for a stochastic porous media equation in the whole space R^1 perturbed by a multiplicative coloured noise. For almost all random realizations $ω$, one associates a stochastic differential equation in law with random coefficients, driven by an independent Brownian motion.

Infinite-dimensional calculus under weak spatial regularity of the processes

Two generalizations of Itô formula to infinite-dimensional spaces are given. The first one, in Hilbert spaces, extends the classical one by taking advantage of cancellations, when they occur in examples and it is applied to the case of a group generator. The second one, based on the previous one and a limit procedure, is an Itô formula in a special class of Banach spaces, having a product structure with the noise in a Hilbertian component, again the key point is the extension due to a cancellation. This extension to Banach spaces and in particular the specific cancellation are motivated by path-dependent Itô calculus.

Particle system algorithm and chaos propagation related to non-conservative McKean type stochastic differential equations

We discuss numerical aspects related to a new class of nonlinear Stochastic Differential Equations in the sense of McKean, which are supposed to represent non conservative nonlinear Partial Differential equations (PDEs). We propose an original interacting particle system for which we discuss the propagation of chaos. We consider a time-discretized approximation of this particle system to which we associate a random function which is proved to converge to a solution of a regularized version of a nonlinear PDE.

Special weak Dirichlet processes and BSDEs driven by a random measure

This paper considers a forward BSDE driven by a random measure, when the underlying forward process X is special semimartingale, or even more generally, a special weak Dirichlet process. Given a solution (Y, Z, U), generally Y appears to be of the type u(t, X\_t) where u is a deterministic function. In this paper we identify Z and U in terms of u applying stochastic calculus with respect to weak Dirichlet processes.

Elliptic PDEs with distributional drift and backward SDEs driven by a c{à}dl{à}g martingale with random terminal time

We introduce a generalized notion of semilinear elliptic partial differential equations where the corresponding second order partial differential operator $L$ has a generalized drift. We investigate existence and uniqueness of generalized solutions of class $C^1$. The generator $L$ is associated with a Markov process $X$ which is the solution of a stochastic differential equation with distributional drift. If the semilinear PDE admits boundary conditions, its solution is naturally associated with a backward stochastic differential equation (BSDE) with random terminal time, where the forward process is $X$. Since $X$ is a weak solution of the forward SDE, the BSDE appears naturally to be driven by a martingale. In the paper we also discuss the uniqueness of a BSDE with random terminal time when the driving process is a general c{à}dl{à}g martingale.

Functional it{ô} versus banach space stochastic calculus and strict solutions of semilinear path-dependent equations

Functional Itô calculus was introduced in order to expand a functional $F(t, X\_{\cdot+t}, X\_t)$ depending on time $t$, past and present values of the process $X$. Another possibility to expand $F(t, X\_{\cdot+t}, X\_t)$ consists in considering the path $X\_{\cdot+t}=\{X\_{x+t},\,x\in[-T,0]\}$ as an element of the Banach space of continuous functions on $C([-T,0])$ and to use Banach space stochastic calculus. The aim of this paper is threefold. 1) To reformulate functional Itô calculus, separating time and past, making use of the regularization procedures which matches more naturally the notion of horizontal derivative which is one of the tools of that calculus. 2) To exploit this reformulation in order to discuss the (not obvious) relation between the functional and the Banach space approaches. 3) To study existence and uniqueness of smooth solutions to path-dependent partial differential equations which naturally arise in the study of functional Itô calculus. More precisely, we study a path-dependent equation of Kolmogorov type which is related to the window process of the solution to an Itô stochastic differential equation with path-dependent coefficients. We also study a semilinear version of that equation.

On countably skewed Brownian motion with accumulation point

In this work we connect the theory of Dirichlet forms and direct stochastic calculus to obtain strong existence and pathwise uniqueness for Brownian motion that is perturbed by a series of constant multiples of local times at a sequence of points that has exactly one accumulation point in $\mathbb{R}$. The considered process is identified as special distorted Brownian motion $X$ in dimension one and is studied thoroughly. Besides strong uniqueness, we present necessary and sufficient conditions for non-explosion, recurrence and positive recurrence as well as for $X$ to be semimartingale and possible applications to advection-diffusion in layered media.

To this system, we associate a random function which is proved to converge to a solution of a regularized version of PDE.

A regularization approach to functional Itô calculus and strong-viscosity solutions to path-dependent PDEs

First, we revisit functional Itô/path-dependent calculus started by B. Dupire, R. Cont and D.-A. Fournié, using the formulation of calculus via regularization. Relations with the corresponding Banach space valued calculus introduced by C. Di Girolami and the second named author are explored. The second part of the paper is devoted to the study of the Kolmogorov type equation associated with the so called window Brownian motion, called path-dependent heat equation, for which well-posedness at the level of classical solutions is established. Then, a notion of strong approximating solution, called strong-viscosity solution, is introduced which is supposed to be a substitution tool to the viscosity solution. For that kind of solution, we also prove existence and uniqueness. The notion of strong-viscosity solution motivates the last part of the paper which is devoted to explore this new concept of solution for general semilinear PDEs in the finite dimensional case. We prove an equivalence result between the classical viscosity solution and the new one. The definition of strong-viscosity solution for semilinear PDEs is inspired by the notion of "good" solution, and it is based again on an approximating procedure.

A stochastic Fokker-Planck equation and double probabilistic representation for the stochastic porous media type equation

The purpose of the present paper consists in proposing and discussing a double probabilistic representation for a porous media equation in the whole space perturbed by a multiplicative colored noise. For almost all random realizations $ω$, one associates a stochastic differential equation in law with random coefficients, driven by an independent Brownian motion. The key ingredient is a uniqueness lemma for a linear SPDE of Fokker-Planck type with measurable bounded (possibly degenerated) random coefficients.

Calculus via regularizations in Banach spaces and Kolmogorov-type path-dependent equations

The paper reminds the basic ideas of stochastic calculus via regularizations in Banach spaces and its applications to the study of strict solutions of Kolmogorov path dependent equations associated with "windows" of diffusion processes. One makes the link between the Banach space approach and the so called functional stochastic calculus. When no strict solutions are available one describes the notion of strong-viscosity solution which alternative (in infinite dimension) to the classical notion of viscosity solution.

Gaussian and non-Gaussian processes of zero power variation, and related stochastic calculus

We consider a class of stochastic processes $X$ defined by $X\left( t\right) =\int_{0}^{T}G\left( t,s\right) dM\left( s\right) $ for $t\in\lbrack0,T]$, where $M$ is a square-integrable continuous martingale and $G$ is a deterministic kernel. Let $m$ be an odd integer. Under the assumption that the quadratic variation $\left[ M\right] $ of $M$ is differentiable with $\mathbf{E}\left[ \left\vert d\left[ M\right] (t)/dt\right\vert ^{m}\right] $ finite, it is shown that the $m$th power variation $$ \lim_{\varepsilon\rightarrow0}\varepsilon^{-1}\int_{0}^{T}ds\left( X\left( s+\varepsilon\right) -X\left( s\right) \right) ^{m} $$ exists and is zero when a quantity $δ^{2}\left( r\right) $ related to the variance of an increment of $M$ over a small interval of length $r$ satisfies $δ\left( r\right) =o\left( r^{1/(2m)}\right) $. When $M$ is the Wiener process, $X$ is Gaussian; the class then includes fractional Brownian motion and other Gaussian processes with or without stationary increments. When $X$ is Gaussian and has stationary increments, $δ$ is $X$'s univariate canonical metric, and the condition on $δ$ is proved to be necessary. In the non-stationary Gaussian case, when $m=3$, the symmetric (generalized Stratonovich) integral is defined, proved to exist, and its Itô formula is established for all functions of class $C^{6}$.

On cubic hypersurfaces with vanishing hessian

If $X = V(f) \subset \mathbb P^N$ is a reduced complex hypersurface, the hessian of $f$ (or by abusing the terminology the hessian of $X$) is the determinant of the matrix of the second derivatives of the form $f$, that is the determinant of the hessian matrix of $f$. Hypersurfaces with vanishing hessian were studied systematically for the first time in the fundamental paper [GN], where Gordan and M. Noether analyze Hesse's claims in [Hesse1, Hesse2] according to which these hypersurfaces are necessarily cones. Of course cones have vanishing hessian. Clearly the claim is true if deg(X)=2 so that the first relevant case for the problem is that of cubic hypersurfaces. One immediately sees that $V(x_0x_3^2 + x_1x_3x_4 + x_2x_4^2)\subset \mathbb P^4$ is a cubic hypersurface with vanishing hessian but not a cone (for example one could check that the first partial derivatives of the equation are linearly independent). As firstly pointed out in [GN], the claim is true for $N\leq 3$ and in general false for every $N\geq 4$. Here we prove that for $N\leq 6$ an irreducible cubic hypersurface with vanishing hessian in $\mathbb P^N$ is either a cone or a scroll in linear spaces tangent to the dual of the image of the polar map of the hypersurface. We also provide canonical forms and a projective characterization of {\it Special Perazzo Cubic Hypersurfaces}, which, a posteriori, exhaust the class of cubic hypersurfaces with vanishing hessian, not cones, for $N\leq 6$. Finally we show by pertinent examples the technical difficulties arising for $N\geq 7$.

On dual defective manifolds

An embedded manifold is dual defective if its dual variety is not a hypersurface. Using the geometry of the variety of lines through a general point, we characterize scrolls among dual defective manifolds. This leads to an optimal bound for the dual defect, which improves results due to Ein. Among other things we also provide a short and easy proof of the famous Landman Parity Theorem for dual defective manifolds based on our approach to the subject. We also discuss our conjecture that every dual defective manifold with cyclic Picard group should be secant defective, of a very special type, namely a local quadratic entry locus variety.

The stochastic porous media equation in $\R^d$

Existence and uniqueness of solutions to the stochastic porous media equation $dX-\Dψ(X) dt=XdW$ in $\rr^d$ are studied. Here, $W$ is a Wiener process, $ψ$ is a maximal monotone graph in $\rr\times\rr$ such that $ψ(r)\le C|r|^m$, $\ff r\in\rr$, $W$ is a coloured Wiener process. In this general case the dimension is restricted to $d\ge 3$, the main reason being the absence of a convenient multiplier result in the space $\calh=\{φ\in\mathcal{S}'(\rr^d);\ |ξ|(\calfφ)(ξ)\in L^2(\rr^d)\}$, for $d\le2$. When $ψ$ is Lipschitz, the well-posedness, however, holds for all dimensions on the classical Sobolev space $H^{-1}(\rr^d)$. If $ψ(r)r\geρ|r|^{m+1}$ and $m=\frac{d-2}{d+2}$, we prove the finite time extinction with strictly positive probability.

BSDEs under partial information and financial applications

In this paper we provide existence and uniqueness results for the solution of BSDEs driven by a general square integrable martingale under partial information. We discuss some special cases where the solution to a BSDE under restricted information can be derived by that related to a problem of a BSDE under full information. In particular, we provide a suitable version of the Föllmer-Schweizer decomposition of a square integrable random variable working under partial information and we use this achievement to investigate the local risk-minimization approach for a semimartingale financial market model.

Generalized covariation for Banach space valued processes, Itô formula and applications

This paper discusses a new notion of quadratic variation and covariation for Banach space valued processes (not necessarily semimartingales) and related Itô formula. If $\X$ and $\Y$ take respectively values in Banach spaces $B_{1}$ and $B_{2}$ and $χ$ is a suitable subspace of the dual of the projective tensor product of $B_{1}$ and $B_{2}$ (denoted by $(B_{1}\hat{\otimes}_πB_{2})^{\ast}$), we define the so-called $χ$-covariation of $\X$ and $\Y$. If $\X=\Y$, the $χ$-covariation is called $χ$-quadratic variation. The notion of $χ$-quadratic variation is a natural generalization of the one introduced by Métivier-Pellaumail and Dinculeanu which is too restrictive for many applications. In particular, if $χ$ is the whole space $(B_{1}\hat{\otimes}_πB_{1})^{\ast}$ then the $χ$-quadratic variation coincides with the quadratic variation of a $B_{1}$-valued semimartingale. We evaluate the $χ$-covariation of various processes for several examples of $χ$ with a particular attention to the case $B_{1}=B_{2}=C([-τ,0])$ for some $τ>0$ and $\X$ and $\Y$ being \textit{window processes}. If $X$ is a real valued process, we call window process associated with $X$ the $C([-τ,0])$-valued process $\X:=X(\cdot)$ defined by $X_t(y) = X_{t+y}$, where $y \in [-τ,0]$. The Itô formula introduced here is an important instrument to establish a representation result of Clark-Ocone type for a class of path dependent random variables of type $h=H(X_{T}(\cdot))$, $H:C([-T,0])\longrightarrow\R$ for not-necessarily semimartingales $X$ with finite quadratic variation. This representation will be linked to a function $u:[0,T]\times C([-T,0])\longrightarrow \mathbb{R}$ solving an infinite dimensional partial differential equation.

Probabilistic representation for solutions of a porous media type equation with Neumann boundary condition: the case of the half-line

The purpose of this paper consists in proposing a generalized solution for a porous media type equation on a half-line with Neumann boundary condition and prove a probabilistic representation of this solution in terms of an associated microscopic diffusion. The main idea is to construct a stochastic differential equation with reflection which has a solution in law and whose marginal law densities provide the unique solution of the porous media type equation.

Second Order PDEs with Dirichlet White Noise Boundary Condition

In this paper we study the Poisson and heat equations on bounded and unbounded domains with smooth boundary with random Dirichlet boundary conditions. The main novelty of this work is a convenient framework for the analysis of such equations excited by the white in time and/or space noise on the boundary. Our approach allows us to show the existence and uniqueness of weak solutions in the space of distributions. Then we prove that the solutions can be identified as smooth functions inside the domain, and finally the rate of their blow up at the boundary is estimated. A large class of noises including Wiener and fractional Wiener space time white noise, homogeneous noise and Lévy noise is considered.

The covariation for Banach space valued processes and applications

This article focuses on a new concept of quadratic variation for processes taking values in a Banach space $B$ and a corresponding covariation. This is more general than the classical one of Métivier and Pellaumail. Those notions are associated with some subspace $χ$ of the dual of the projective tensor product of $B$ with itself. We also introduce the notion of a convolution type process, which is a natural generalization of the Itô process and the concept of $\bar ν_0$-semimartingale, which is a natural extension of the classical notion of semimartingale. The framework is the stochastic calculus via regularization in Banach spaces. Two main applications are mentioned: one related to Clark-Ocone formula for finite quadratic variation processes; the second one concerns the probabilistic representation of a Hilbert valued partial differential equation of Kolmogorov type.

The object of this paper is the uniqueness for a $d$-dimensional Fokker-Planck type equation with non-homogeneous (possibly degenerated) measurable not necessarily bounded coefficients. We provide an application to the probabilistic representation of the so called Barenblatt solution of the fast diffusion equation which is the partial differential equation $\partial_t u = \partial^2_{xx} u^m$ with $m\in(0,1)$. Together with the mentioned Fokker-Planck equation, we make use of small time density estimates uniformly with respect to the initial condition

Gaussian and non-Gaussian processes of zero power variation

This paper considers the class of stochastic processes $X$ which are Volterra convolutions of a martingale $M$. When $M$ is Brownian motion, $X$ is Gaussian, and the class includes fractional Brownian motion and other Gaussian processes with or without homogeneous increments. Let $m$ be an odd integer. Under some technical conditions on the quadratic variation of $M$, it is shown that the $m$-power variation exists and is zero when a quantity $δ^{2}(r) $ related to the variance of an increment of $M$ over a small interval of length $r$ satisfies $δ(r) = o(r^{1/(2m)}) $. In the case of a Gaussian process with homogeneous increments, $δ$ is $X$'s canonical metric and the condition on $δ$ is proved to be necessary, and the zero variation result is extended to non-integer symmetric powers. In the non-homogeneous Gaussian case, when $m=3$, the symmetric (generalized Stratonovich) integral is defined, proved to exist, and its Itô's formula is proved to hold for all functions of class $C^{6}$.

On some expectation and derivative operators related to integral representations of random variables with respect to a PII process

Given a process with independent increments $X$ (not necessarily a martingale) and a large class of square integrable r.v. $H=f(X_T)$, $f$ being the Fourier transform of a finite measure $μ$, we provide explicit Kunita-Watanabe and Föllmer-Schweizer decompositions. The representation is expressed by means of two significant maps: the expectation and derivative operators related to the characteristics of $X$. We also provide an explicit expression for the variance optimal error when hedging the claim $H$ with underlying process $X$. Those questions are motivated by finding the solution of the celebrated problem of global and local quadratic risk minimization in mathematical finance.

Variance Optimal Hedging for discrete time processes with independent increments. Application to Electricity Markets

We consider the discretized version of a (continuous-time) two-factor model introduced by Benth and coauthors for the electricity markets. For this model, the underlying is the exponent of a sum of independent random variables. We provide and test an algorithm, which is based on the celebrated Foellmer-Schweizer decomposition for solving the mean-variance hedging problem. In particular, we establish that decomposition explicitely, for a large class of vanilla contingent claims. Interest is devoted in the choice of rebalancing dates and its impact on the hedging error, regarding the payoff regularity and the non stationarity of the log-price process.

Extremal varieties 3-rationally connected by cubics, quadro-quadric Cremona transformations and rank 3 Jordan algebras

We also provide some applications to the classification of particular classes of varieties in the class defined above and of quadro-quadric Cremona transformations, proving also a structure theorem for these birational maps and for varieties 3-covered by twisted cubics by reinterpreting for these objects the solvability of the radical of a Jordan algebra.

Generalized covariation and extended Fukushima decompositions for Banach valued processes. Application to windows of Dirichlet processes

This paper concerns a class of Banach valued processes which have finite quadratic variation. The notion introduced here generalizes the classical one, of Métivier and Pellaumail which is quite restrictive. We make use of the notion of $χ$-covariation which is a generalized notion of covariation for processes with values in two Banach spaces $B_{1}$ and $B_{2}$. $χ$ refers to a suitable subspace of the dual of the projective tensor product of $B_{1}$ and $B_{2}$. We investigate some $C^{1}$ type transformations for various classes of stochastic processes admitting a $χ$-quadratic variation and related properties. If $\X^1$ and $\X^2$ admit a $χ$-covariation, $F^i: B_i \rightarrow \R$, $i = 1, 2$ are of class $C^1$ with some supplementary assumptions then the covariation of the real processes $F^1(\X^1)$ and $F^2(\X^2)$ exist. A detailed analysis will be devoted to the so-called window processes. Let $X$ be a real continuous process; the $C([-τ,0])$-valued process $X(\cdot)$ defined by $X_t(y) = X_{t+y}$, where $y \in [-τ,0]$, is called {\it window} process. Special attention is given to transformations of window processes associated with Dirichlet and weak Dirichlet processes. In fact we aim to generalize the following properties valid for $B=\R$. If $\X=X$ is a real valued Dirichlet process and $F:B \rightarrow \R$ of class $C^{1}(B)$ then $F(\X)$ is still a Dirichlet process. If $\X=X$ is a weak Dirichlet process with finite quadratic variation, and $F: C^{0,1}([0,T]\times B)$ is of class $C^{0,1}$, then $[ F(t, \X_t) ] $ is a weak Dirichlet process. We specify corresponding results when $B=C([-τ,0])$ and $\X=X(\cdot)$. This will consitute a significant Fukushima decomposition for functionals of windows of (weak) Dirichlet processes. As applications, we give a new technique for representing path-dependent random variables.

The first part of this note contains a review of basic properties of the variety of lines contained in an embedded projective variety and passing through a general point. In particular we provide a detailed proof that for varieties defined by quadratic equations the base locus of the projective second fundamental form at a general point coincides, as a scheme, with the variety of lines. The second part concerns the problem of extending embedded projective manifolds, using the geometry of the variety of lines. Some applications to the case of homogeneous manifolds are included.

On projective varieties $n$-covered by curves of degree $δ$

As proved recently in [PT], for varieties $X^{r+1}\subset \mathbb P^N$ such that through $n\geq 2$ general points there passes an irreducible curve $C$ of degree $δ\geq n-1$ we have $N\leq π(r,n,δ+r(n-1)+2)$, where $π(r,n,d)$ is the Castelnuovo-Harris bound function for the geometric genus of an irreducible non-degenerate variety $Y^r\subset\mathbb P^{n+r-1}$ of degree $d$. A lot of examples of varieties as in the title and attaining the previous bound for the embedding dimension are constructed from Castelnuovo varieties and were thus dubbed {\it of Castelnuovo type} in [PT], where it is also proved that all extremal varieties as above are of this kind, except possibly when $n>2$, $r>1$ and $δ=2n-3$. One of the main results of the paper is the classification of extremal varieties $X^{r+1}\subset \mathbb P^{2r+3}$ 3-covered by twisted cubics and not of Castelnuovo type. Interesting examples are provided by the so called {\it twisted cubics over complex Jordan algebras of rank 3}, as pointed out by Mukai. By relating to an extremal variety 3-covered by twisted cubics, via tangential projection, a quadro-quadric Cremona transformation in $\mathbb P^r$ we are able to classify all these object either for $r\leq 4$ or under the smoothness assumption. In the last case we obtain that they are either smooth rational normal scrolls (hence of Castelnuovo type) or the Segre embeddings of $\p^1\times Q^r$ or one of the four Lagrangian Grassmannians. We end by discussing some open problems pointing towards the equivalence of these apparently unrelated objects: extremal varieties 3-covered by twisted cubics, quadro-quadric Cremona transformations of $\mathbb P^r$ and complex Jordan algebras of dimension $r+1$ and of rank three.

On stochastic calculus related to financial assets without semimartingales

This paper does not suppose a priori that the evolution of the price of a financial asset is a semimartingale. Since possible strategies of investors are self-financing, previous prices are forced to be finite quadratic variation processes. The non-arbitrage property is not excluded if the class $\mathcal{A}$ of admissible strategies is restricted. The classical notion of martingale is replaced with the notion of $\mathcal{A}$-martingale. A calculus related to $\mathcal{A}$-martingales with some examples is developed. Some applications to no-arbitrage, viability, hedging and the maximization of the utility of an insider are expanded. We finally revisit some no arbitrage conditions of Bender-Sottinen-Valkeila type.

On the classification of OADP varieties

The main purpose of this paper is to show that OADP varieties stand at an important crossroad of various main streets in different disciplines like projective geometry, birational geometry and algebra. This is a good reason for studying and classifying them. Main specific results are: (a) the classification of all OADP surfaces (regardless to their smoothness); (b) the classification of a relevant class of normal OADP varieties of any dimension, which includes interesting examples like lagrangian grassmannians. Following [PR], the equivalence of the classification in (b) with the one of quadro-quadric Cremona transformations and of complex, unitary, cubic Jordan algebras are explained.

A probabilistic algorithm approximating solutions of a singular PDE of porous media type

The object of this paper is a one-dimensional generalized porous media equation (PDE) with possibly discontinuous coefficient $β$, which is well-posed as an evolution problem in $L^1(\mathbb{R})$. In some recent papers of Blanchard et alia and Barbu et alia, the solution was represented by the solution of a non-linear stochastic differential equation in law if the initial condition is a bounded integrable function. We first extend this result, at least when $β$ is continuous and the initial condition is only integrable with some supplementary technical assumption. The main purpose of the article consists in introducing and implementing a stochastic particle algorithm to approach the solution to (PDE) which also fits in the case when $β$ is possibly irregular, to predict some long-time behavior of the solution and in comparing with some recent numerical deterministic techniques.

Clark-Ocone type formula for non-semimartingales with finite quadratic variation

We provide a suitable framework for the concept of finite quadratic variation for processes with values in a separable Banach space $B$ using the language of stochastic calculus via regularizations, introduced in the case $B= \R$ by the second author and P. Vallois. To a real continuous process $X$ we associate the Banach valued process $X(\cdot)$, called {\it window} process, which describes the evolution of $X$ taking into account a memory $τ>0$. The natural state space for $X(\cdot)$ is the Banach space of continuous functions on $[-τ,0]$. If $X$ is a real finite quadratic variation process, an appropriated Itô formula is presented, from which we derive a generalized Clark-Ocone formula for non-semimartingales having the same quadratic variation as Brownian motion. The representation is based on solutions of an infinite dimensional PDE.

Malliavin-Skorohod calculus and Paley-Wiener integral for covariance singular processes

We develop a stochastic analysis for a Gaussian process $X$ with singular covariance by an intrinsic procedure focusing on several examples such as covariance measure structure processes, bifractional Brownian motion, processes with stationary increments. We introduce some new spaces associated with the self-reproducing kernel space and we define the Paley-Wiener integral of first and second order even when $X$ is only a square integrable process continuous in $L^2$. If $X$ has stationary increments, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions so that its paths belong to the self-reproducing kernel space. We develop Skorohod calculus and its relation with symmetric-Stratonovich type integrals and two types of Itô's formula. One of Skorohod type, which works under very general (even very singular) conditions for the covariance; the second one of symmetric-Stratonovich type, which works, when the covariance is at least as regular as the one of a fractional Brownian motion of Hurst index equal to $H = \frac{1}{4}$.

Conic-connected Manifolds

We study a particular class of rationally connected manifolds, $X\subset \p^N$, such that two general points $x,x' \in X$ may be joined by a conic contained in $X$. We prove that these manifolds are Fano, with $b_2\leq 2$. Moreover, a precise classification is obtained for $b_2=2$. Complete intersections of high dimension with respect to their multi-degree provide examples for the case $b_2=1$. The proof of the classification result uses a general characterization of rationality, in terms of suitable covering families of rational curves.

Probabilistic representation for solutions of an irregular porous media type equation: the degenerate case

We consider a possibly degenerate porous media type equation over all of $\R^d$ with $d = 1$, with monotone discontinuous coefficients with linear growth and prove a probabilistic representation of its solution in terms of an associated microscopic diffusion. This equation is motivated by some singular behaviour arising in complex self-organized critical systems. The main idea consists in approximating the equation by equations with monotone non-degenerate coefficients and deriving some new analytical properties of the solution.

Varieties with quadratic entry locus, II

We continue the study, begun by the second author in math.AG/0701889, of secant defective manifolds having "simple entry loci". We prove that such manifolds are rational and describe them in terms of tangential projections. Using also our results in math.AG/0701885, their classification is reduced to the case of Fano manifolds of high index, whose Picard group is generated by the hyperplane section class. Conjecturally, the former should be linear sections of rational homogeneous manifolds. We also provide evidence that the classification of linearly normal dual defective manifolds with Picard group generated by the hyperplane section should follow along the same lines.

Some extremal contractions between smooth varieties arising from projective geometry

We construct explicit examples of elementary extremal contractions, both birational and of fiber type, from smooth projective n-dimensional varieties, n\geq 4, onto smooth projective varieties, arising from classical projective geometry and defined over sufficiently small fields, not necessarily algebraically closed. The examples considered come from particular special homaloidal and subhomaloidal linear systems, which usually are degenerations of general phenomena classically investigated by Bordiga, Severi, Todd, Room, Fano, Semple and Tyrrell and more recently by Ein and Shepherd-Barron. The first series of examples is associated to particular codimension 2 determinantal smooth subvarieties of P^m, 3\leq m\leq 5. We get another series of examples by considering special cubic hypersurfaces through some surfaces in P^5, or some 3-folds in P^7 having one apparent double point. The last examples come from an intriguing birational elementary extremal contraction in dimension 6, studied by Semple and Tyrrell and fully described in the last section.

Varieties with minimal secant degree and linear systems of maximal dimension on surfaces

In this paper we prove, using a refinement of Terracini's Lemma, a sharp lower bound for the degree of (higher) secant varieties to a given projective variety, which extends the well known lower bound for the degree of a variety in terms of its dimension and codimension in projective space. Moreover we study varieties for which the bound is attained proving some general properties related to tangential projections, e.g. these varieties are rational. In particular we completely classify surfaces (and curves) for which the bound is attained. It turns out that these surfaces enjoy some maximality properties for their embedding dimension in terms of their degree or sectional genus. This is related to classical beautiful results of Castelnuovo and Enriques that we revise here in terms of adjunction theory.
