The Object Oriented c++ library QIBSH++ for Hermite spline Quasi Interpolation

The library QIBSH++ is a C++ object oriented library for the solution of Quasi Interpolation problems. The library is based on a Hermite Quasi Interpolating operator, which was derived as continuous extensions of linear multistep methods applied for the numerical solution of Boundary Value Problems for Ordinary Differential Equations. The library includes the possibility to use Hermite data or to apply a finite difference scheme for derivative approximations, when derivative values are not directly available. The generalization of the quasi interpolation procedure to surfaces and volumes approximation by means of a tensor product technique is also implemented. The method has been also generalized for one dimensional vectorial data, periodic data, and for two dimensional data in cylindrical coordinates, periodic with respect to the angular argument. Numerical tests show that the library could be used efficiently in many practical problems.

Mathematical aspects relative to the fluid statics of a self-gravitating perfect-gas isothermal sphere

In the present paper we analyze and discuss some mathematical aspects of the fluid-static configurations of a self-gravitating perfect gas enclosed in a spherical solid shell. The mathematical model we consider is based on the well-known Lane-Emden equation, albeit under boundary conditions that differ from those usually assumed in the astrophysical literature. The existence of multiple solutions requires particular attention in devising appropriate numerical schemes apt to deal with and catch the solution multiplicity as efficiently and accurately as possible. In sequence, we describe some analytical properties of the model, the two algorithms used to obtain numerical solutions, and the numerical results for two selected cases.

On the use of the Infinity Computer architecture to set up a dynamic precision floating-point arithmetic

We devise a variable precision floating-point arithmetic by exploiting the framework provided by the Infinity Computer. This is a computational platform implementing the Infinity Arithmetic system, a positional numeral system which can handle both infinite and infinitesimal quantities symbolized by the positive and negative finite powers of the radix grossone. The computational features offered by the Infinity Computer allows us to dynamically change the accuracy of representation and floating-point operations during the flow of a computation. When suitably implemented, this possibility turns out to be particularly advantageous when solving ill-conditioned problems. In fact, compared with a standard multi-precision arithmetic, here the accuracy is improved only when needed, thus not affecting that much the overall computational effort. An illustrative example about the solution of a nonlinear equation is also presented.

Bivariate hierarchical Hermite spline quasi--interpolation

Spline quasi-interpolation (QI) is a general and powerful approach for the construction of low cost and accurate approximations of a given function. In order to provide an efficient adaptive approximation scheme in the bivariate setting, we consider quasi-interpolation in hierarchical spline spaces. In particular, we study and experiment the features of the hierarchical extension of the tensor-product formulation of the Hermite BS quasi-interpolation scheme. The convergence properties of this hierarchical operator, suitably defined in terms of truncated hierarchical B-spline bases, are analyzed. A selection of numerical examples is presented to compare the performances of the hierarchical and tensor-product versions of the scheme.

Fifty Years of Stiffness

The notion of stiffness, which originated in several applications of a different nature, has dominated the activities related to the numerical treatment of differential problems for the last fifty years. Contrary to what usually happens in Mathematics, its definition has been, for a long time, not formally precise (actually, there are too many of them). Again, the needs of applications, especially those arising in the construction of robust and general purpose codes, require nowadays a formally precise definition. In this paper, we review the evolution of such a notion and we also provide a precise definition which encompasses all the previous ones.
