Concentration of Additive Functionals for Markov Processes and Applications to Interacting Particle Systems

We consider additive functionals of Markov processes in continuous time with general (metric) state spaces. We derive concentration bounds for their exponential moments and moments of finite order. Applications include diffusions, interacting particle systems and random walks. The method is based on coupling estimates and not spectral theory, hence reversibility is not needed. We bound the exponential moments(or the moments of finite order) in terms of a so-called coupled function difference, which in turn is estimated using the generalized coupling time. Along the way we prove a general relation between the contractivity of the semigroup and bounds on the generalized coupling time.

Markov process representation of semigroups whose generators include negative rates

Generators of Markov processes on a countable state space can be represented as finite or infinite matrices. One key property is that the off-diagonal entries corresponding to jump rates of the Markov process are non-negative. Here we present stochastic characterizations of the semigroup generated by a generator with possibly negative rates. This is done by considering a larger state space with one or more particles and antiparticles, with antiparticles being particles carrying a negative sign.

A new look at duality for the symbiotic branching model

The symbiotic branching model is a spatial population model describing the dynamics of two interacting types that can only branch if both types are present. A classical result for the underlying stochastic partial differential equation identifies moments of the solution via a duality to a system of Brownian motions with dynamically changing colors. In this paper, we revisit this duality and give it a new interpretation. This new approach allows us to extend the duality to the limit as the branching rate $γ$ is sent to infinity. This limit is particularly interesting since it captures the large scale behaviour of the system. As an application of the duality, we can explicitly identify the $γ= \infty$ limit when the driving noises are perfectly negatively correlated. The limit is a system of annihilating Brownian motions with a drift that depends on the initial imbalance between the types.

Explicit LDP for a slowed RW driven by a symmetric exclusion process

We consider a random walk (RW) driven by a simple symmetric exclusion process (SSE). Rescaling the RW and the SSE in such a way that a joint hydrodynamic limit theorem holds we prove a joint path large deviation principle. The corresponding large deviation rate function can be split into two components, the rate function of the SSE and the one of the RW given the path of the SSE. Such components have different structures (Gaussian and Poissoinian, respectively) and to overcome this difficulty we make use of the theory of Orlicz spaces. In particular, the component of the rate function corresponding to the RW is explicit.

A Variance Inequality for Glauber Dynamics applicable to High and Low Temperature Regimes

A variance inequality for spin-flip systems is obtained using comparatively weaker knowledge of relaxation to equilibrium based on coupling estimates for single site disturbances. We obtain variance inequalities interpolating between the Poincaré inequality and the uniform variance inequality, and a general weak Poincaré inequality. For monotone dynamics the variance inequality can be obtained from decay of the autocorrelation of the spin at the origin, i.e., from that decay we conclude decay for general functions. This method is then applied to the low temperature Ising model, where the time-decay of the autocorrelation of the origin is extended to arbitrary quasi-local functions.

Symmetric exclusion as a random environment: hydrodynamic limits

We consider a one-dimensional continuous time random walk with transition rates depending on an underlying autonomous simple symmetric exclusion process starting out of equilibrium. This model represents an example of a random walk in a slowly non-uniform mixing dynamic random environment. Under a proper space-time rescaling in which the exclusion is speeded up compared to the random walk, we prove a hydrodynamic limit theorem for the exclusion as seen by this walk and we derive an ODE describing the macroscopic evolution of the walk. The main difficulty is the proof of a replacement lemma for the exclusion as seen from the walk without explicit knowledge of its invariant measures. We further discuss how to obtain similar results for several variants of this model.

Talagrand's inequality for Interacting Particle Systems satisfying a log-Sobolev inequality

Talagrand's inequality for independent Bernoulli random variables is extended to many interacting particle systems (IPS). The main assumption is that the IPS satisfies a log-Sobolev inequality. In this context it is also shown that a slightly stronger version of Talagrand's inequality is equivalent to a log-Sobolev inequality. Additionally we also look at a common application, the relation between the probability of increasing events and the influences on that event by changing a single spin.

Random walks in dynamic random environments: A transference principle

We study a general class of random walks driven by a uniquely ergodic Markovian environment. Under a coupling condition on the environment we obtain strong ergodicity properties for the environment as seen from the position of the walker, that is, the environment process. We can transfer the rate of mixing in time of the environment to the rate of mixing of the environment process with a loss of at most polynomial order. Therefore the method is applicable to environments with sufficiently fast polynomial mixing. We obtain unique ergodicity of the environment process. Moreover, the unique invariant measure of the environment process depends continuously on the jump rates of the walker. As a consequence we obtain the law of large numbers and a central limit theorem with nondegenerate variance for the position of the walk.

The super-critical contact process has a spectral gap

We consider the super-critical contact process on $\mathbb{Z}^d$. It is known that measures which dominate the upper invariant measure $μ$ converge exponentially fast to $μ$. However, the same is not true for measures which are below $μ$, as the time to infect a large empty region is related to its diameter. The result of this paper is the existence of a spectral gap in $L^2(μ)$, that is, the spectrum of the generator is empty inside an open strip $\{z\in\mathbb{C}: -λ<\Im(z)<0\}$ of the complex plane. This is equivalent to the fact that the variance of the semi-group of the contact process decays exponentially fast. It is perhaps surprising that the existence of the spectral gap has not been proven before. One of the reasons is that the contact process is non-reversible, and hence many methods from spectral theory are not applicable.

Transient random walk in symmetric exclusion: limit theorems and an Einstein relation

We consider a one-dimensional simple symmetric exclusion process in equilibrium, constituting a dynamic random environment for a nearest-neighbor random walk that on occupied/vacant sites has two different local drifts to the right. We construct a renewal structure from which a LLN, a functional CLT and large deviation bounds for the random walk under the annealed measure follow. We further prove an Einstein relation under a suitable perturbation. A brief discussion on the topic of random walks in slowly mixing dynamic random environments is presented.

Limit theorems for random walks in dynamic random environment

We study a general class of random walks driven by a uniquely ergodic Markovian environment. Under a coupling condition on the environment we obtain strong ergodicity properties and concentration inequalities for the environment as seen from the position of the walker, i.e the environment process. We also obtain ergodicity of the uniquely ergodic measure of the environment process as well as continuity as a function of the jump rates of the walker. As a consequence we obtain several limit theorems, such as law of large numbers, Einstein relation, central limit theorem and concentration properties for the position of the walker.
