The Sky is for Everyone - Outreach and Educaction with the Virtual Observatory

The Virtual Observatory (VO) is an international attempt to collect astronomical data (images, simulation, mission-logs, etc), organize it and develop tools that let astronomers access this huge amount of information. The VO not only simplifies the work of professional astronomers, it is also a valuable tool for education and public outreach. For teachers and astronomers who actively promote astronomy to the public the VO is an great opportunity to access real astronomical data, use them and have a taste of the workaday life of astronomers.

Warum Astrologie nicht funktionieren kann

There exists many different versions of astrology that are different from each other and sometimes even in conflict with each other. But the basis of every astrological system is the assumption of a connection between the motion of celestial bodies and the fate of man. An analysis of the methods of astrology shows that - regardless of which special system is used - there exists no consistent basis that allows to deduce general and verifiable rules. An astrological analysis is therefore always arbitrary and meaningless. Astrology does not work. ----- Astrologie existiert in vielen verschiedenen Versionen die sich oft deutliche voneinander unterscheiden und sogar widersprechen. Allen gemeinsam ist aber die grundlegende Annahme eines Zusammenhangs zwischen der Bewegung der Himmelskörper und dem Schicksal der Menschen. Eine Analyse der astrologischen Methodik zeigt, dass sie - egal in welcher konkreten Ausprägung - über keine in sich schlüssige Grundlage verfügt, anhand der sich allgemeingültige und überprüfbare Regeln für die astrologische Arbeit ableiten lassen. Die astrologische Deutung bleibt somit beliebig. Astrologie funktioniert nicht.

Dynamics of the TrES-2 system

The TrES-2 system harbors one planet which was discovered with the transit technique. In this work we investigate the dynamical behavior of possible additional, lower-mass planets. We identify the regions where such planets can move on stable orbits and show how they depend on the initial eccentricity and inclination. We find, that there are stable regions inside and outside the orbit of TrES-2b where additional, smaller planets can move. We also show that those planets can have a large orbital inclination which makes a detection with the transit technique very difficult.
