ECM And The Elliott-Halberstam Conjecture For Quadratic Fields

The complexity of the elliptic curve method of factorization (ECM) is proven under the celebrated conjecture of existence of smooth numbers in short intervals. In this work we tackle a different version of ECM which is actually much more studied and implemented, especially because it allows us to use ECM-friendly curves. In the case of curves with complex multiplication (CM) we replace the heuristics by rigorous results conditional to the Elliott-Halberstam (EH) conjecture. The proven results mirror recent theorems concerning the number of primes p such thar p -- 1 is smooth. To each CM elliptic curve we associate a value which measures how ECM-friendly it is. In the general case we explore consequences of a statement which translated EH in the case of elliptic curves.

Unconditional Chebyshev biases in number fields

Prime counting functions are believed to exhibit, in various contexts, discrepancies beyond what famous equidistribution results predict; this phenomenon is known as Chebyshev's bias. Rubinstein and Sarnak have developed a framework which allows to conditionally quantify biases in the distribution of primes in general arithmetic progressions. Their analysis has been generalized by Ng to the context of the Chebotarev density theorem, under the assumption of the Artin holomorphy conjecture, the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, as well as a linear independence hypothesis on the zeros of Artin $L$-functions. In this paper we show unconditionally the occurrence of extreme biases in this context. These biases lie far beyond what the strongest effective forms of the Chebotarev density theorem can predict. More precisely, we prove the existence of an infinite family of Galois extensions and associated conjugacy classes $C_1,C_2\subset {\rm Gal}(L/K)$ of same size such that the number of prime ideals of norm up to $x$ with Frobenius conjugacy class $C_1$ always exceeds that of Frobenius conjugacy class $C_2$, for every large enough $x$. A key argument in our proof relies on features of certain subgroups of symmetric groups which enable us to circumvent the need for unproven properties of zeros of Artin $L$-functions.

Prime number races for elliptic curves over function fields

We study the prime number race for elliptic curves over the function field of a proper, smooth and geometrically connected curve over a finite field. This constitutes a function field analogue of prior work by Mazur, Sarnak and the second author. In this geometric setting we can prove unconditional results whose counterparts in the number field case are conditional on a Riemann Hypothesis and a linear independence hypothesis on the zeros of the implied L-functions. Notably we show that in certain natural families of elliptic curves, the bias generically dissipates as the conductor grows. This is achieved by proving a central limit theorem and combining it with generic linear independence results that will appear in a separate paper. Also we study in detail a particular family of elliptic curves that have been considered by Ulmer. In contrast to the generic case we show that the race exhibits very diverse outcomes, some of which are believed to be impossible in the number field setting. Such behaviors are possible in the function field case because the zeros of Hasse-Weil L-functions for those elliptic curves can be proven to be highly dependent among themselves, which is a very non generic situation.

On the bilinear structure associated to Bezoutians

This paper is partly a survey of known results on quadratic forms that are hard to find in the literature. Our main focus is a twisted form of a construction due to Bezout. This skew Bezoutian is a symplectic (resp. quadratic) space associated to a pair of reciprocal (or skew reciprocal) coprime polynomials of same degree. The isometry group of this space turns out to contain a certain associated hypergeometric group. Using the skew Bezoutian we construct explicit isometries of bilinear spaces with given invariants (such as the characteristic polynomial or Jordan form and, in the quadratic case, the spinor norm).
