Forcing, genericity and CBERS

In this paper we continue the study of equivalence of generics filters started by Smythe in [Smy22]. We fully characterize those forcing posets for which the corresponding equivalence of generics is smooth using the purely topological property of condensation. Next we leverage our characterization to show that there are non-homogeneous forcing for which equivalence of generics is not smooth. Then we prove hyperfiniteness in the case of Prikry forcing and some additional results addressing the problem whether generic equivalence for Cohen forcing is hyperfinite.

Anti-classification results for groups acting freely on the line

We explore countable ordered Archimedean groups from the point of view of descriptive set theory. We introduce the space of Archimedean left-orderings $\mathrm{Ar}(G)$ for a given countable group $G$, and prove that the equivalence relation induced by the natural action of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{Q})$ on $\mathrm{Ar}(\mathbb{Q}^2)$ is not concretely classifiable. Then we analyze the isomorphism relation for countable ordered Archimedean groups, and pin its complexity in terms of the hierarchy of Hjorth, Kechris and Louveau. In particular, we show that its potential class is not $\boldsymbolΠ^0_3$. This topological constraint prevents classifying Archimedean groups using countable subsets of reals. We obtain analogous results for the bi-embeddability relation, and we consider similar problems for circularly ordered groups, and o-minimal structures such as ordered divisible Abelian groups, and real closed fields. Our proofs combine classical results on Archimedean groups, the theory of Borel equivalence relations, and analyzing definable sets in the basic Cohen model and other models of Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory without choice.

Rotation equivalence and cocycle superrigidity

We analyze Euclidean spheres in higher dimensions and the corresponding orbit equivalence relations induced by the group of rational rotations from the viewpoint of descriptive set theory. It turns out that such equivalence relations are not treeable in dimension greater than $2$. Then we show that the rotation equivalence relation in dimension $n \geq 5$ is not Borel reducible to the one in any lower dimension. Our methods combine a cocycle superrigidity result from the works of Furman and Ioana with the superrigidity theorem for $S$-arithmetic groups of Margulis. We also apply our techniques to give a geometric proof of the existence of uncountably many pairwise incomparable equivalence relations up to Borel reducibility.

Invariant universality for quandles and fields

We show that the embeddability relations for countable quandles and for countable fields of any given characteristic other than 2 are maximally complex in a strong sense: they are invariantly universal. This notion from the theory of Borel reducibility states that any analytic quasi-order on a standard Borel space essentially appears as the restriction of the embeddability relation to an isomorphism-invariant Borel set. As an intermediate step we show that the embeddability relation of countable quandles is a complete analytic quasi-order.

Uncountable structures are not classifiable up to bi-embeddability

Answering some of the main questions from [MR13], we show that whenever $κ$ is a cardinal satisfying $κ^{< κ} = κ> ω$, then the embeddability relation between $κ$-sized structures is strongly invariantly universal, and hence complete for ($κ$-)analytic quasi-orders. We also prove that in the above result we can further restrict our attention to various natural classes of structures, including (generalized) trees, graphs, or groups. This fully generalizes to the uncountable case the main results of [LR05,FMR11,Wil14,CMR17].
