A recursive Lovász theta number for simplex-avoiding sets

We recursively extend the Lovász theta number to geometric hypergraphs on the unit sphere and on Euclidean space, obtaining an upper bound for the independence ratio of these hypergraphs. As an application we reprove a result in Euclidean Ramsey theory in the measurable setting, namely that every $k$-simplex is exponentially Ramsey, and we improve existing bounds for the base of the exponential.

Semidefinite programming bounds for the average kissing number

The average kissing number of $\mathbb{R}^n$ is the supremum of the average degrees of contact graphs of packings of finitely many balls (of any radii) in $\mathbb{R}^n$. We provide an upper bound for the average kissing number based on semidefinite programming that improves previous bounds in dimensions $3, \ldots, 9$. A very simple upper bound for the average kissing number is twice the kissing number; in dimensions $6, \ldots, 9$ our new bound is the first to improve on this simple upper bound.

$k$-point semidefinite programming bounds for equiangular lines

We give a hierarchy of $k$-point bounds extending the Delsarte-Goethals-Seidel linear programming $2$-point bound and the Bachoc-Vallentin semidefinite programming $3$-point bound for spherical codes. An optimized implementation of this hierarchy allows us to compute~$4$, $5$, and $6$-point bounds for the maximum number of equiangular lines in Euclidean space with a fixed common angle.

Flag Algebras: A First Glance

The theory of flag algebras, introduced by Razborov in 2007, has opened the way to a systematic approach to the development of computer-assisted proofs in extremal combinatorics. It makes it possible to derive bounds for parameters in extremal combinatorics with the help of a computer, in a semi-automated manner. This article describes the main points of the theory in a complete way, using Mantel's theorem as a guiding example.

Improving the semidefinite programming bound for the kissing number by exploiting polynomial symmetry

The kissing number of $\mathbb{R}^n$ is the maximum number of pairwise-nonoverlapping unit spheres that can simultaneously touch a central unit sphere. Mittelmann and Vallentin (2010), based on the semidefinite programming bound of Bachoc and Vallentin (2008), computed the best known upper bounds for the kissing number for several values of $n \leq 23$. In this paper, we exploit the symmetry present in the semidefinite programming bound to provide improved upper bounds for $n = 9, \ldots, 23$.

A quantitative version of Steinhaus' theorem for compact, connected, rank-one symmetric spaces

Let $d_1$, $d_2$, ... be a sequence of positive numbers that converges to zero. A generalization of Steinhaus' theorem due to Weil implies that, if a subset of a homogeneous Riemannian manifold has no pair of points at distances $d_1$, $d_2$, ... from each other, then it has to have measure zero. We present a quantitative version of this result for compact, connected, rank-one symmetric spaces, by showing how to choose distances so that the measure of a subset not containing pairs of points at these distances decays exponentially in the number of distances.
