Random ball-polytopes in smooth convex bodies

We study approximations of smooth convex bodies by random ball-polytopes. We examine the following probability model: let $K\subset{\bf R}^d$ be a convex body such that $K$ slides freely in a ball of radius $R>0$ and has $C^2$ smooth boundary. Let $x_1,\ldots, x_n$ be i.i.d. uniform random points in $K$. For $r\geq R$, let $K^r_{(n)}$ denote the intersection of all radius $r$ closed balls that contain $x_1,\ldots, x_n$. Then $K^r_{(n)}$ is a (uniform) random ball-polytope (of radius $r$) in $K$. We study the asymptotic properties of the expectation of the number of facets of $K_{(n)}^r$ as $n\to\infty$. While sufficiently round convex bodies behave in a similar way with respect to random approximation by ball-polytopes as to classical polytopes, an interesting phenomenon can be observed when a unit ball is approximated by unit radius random ball-polytopes: the expected number of facets approaches a finite limit as $n\to\infty$.

The volume of random polytopes circumscribed around a convex body

Let $K$ be a convex body in $\mathbb{R}^d$ which slides freely in a ball. Let $K^{(n)}$ denote the intersection of $n$ closed half-spaces containing $K$ whose bounding hyperplanes are independent and identically distributed according to a certain prescribed probability distribution. We prove an asymptotic formula for the expectation of the difference of the volumes of $K^{(n)}$ and $K$, and an asymptotic upper bound on the variance of the volume of $K^{(n)}$. We achieve these results by first proving similar statements for weighted mean width approximations of convex bodies that admit a rolling ball by inscribed random polytopes and then by polarizing these results.

Intrinsic volumes of random polytopes with vertices on the boundary of a convex body

Let $K$ be a convex body in $\R^d$, let $j\in\{1, ..., d-1\}$, and let $\varrho$ be a positive and continuous probability density function with respect to the $(d-1)$-dimensional Hausdorff measure on the boundary $\partial K$ of $K$. Denote by $K_n$ the convex hull of $n$ points chosen randomly and independently from $\partial K$ according to the probability distribution determined by $\varrho$. For the case when $\partial K$ is a $C^2$ submanifold of $\R^d$ with everywhere positive Gauss curvature, M. Reitzner proved an asymptotic formula for the expectation of the difference of the $j$th intrinsic volumes of $K$ and $K_n$, as $n\to\infty$. In this article, we extend this result to the case when the only condition on $K$ is that a ball rolls freely in $K$.

Intrinsic volumes of inscribed random polytopes in smooth convex bodies

Let $K$ be a $d$ dimensional convex body with a twice continuously differentiable boundary and everywhere positive Gauss-Kronecker curvature. Denote by $K_n$ the convex hull of $n$ points chosen randomly and independently from $K$ according to the uniform distribution. Matching lower and upper bounds are obtained for the orders of magnitude of the variances of the $s$-th intrinsic volumes $V_s(K_n)$ of $K_n$ for $s\in\{1, ..., d\}$. Furthermore, strong laws of large numbers are proved for the intrinsic volumes of $K_n$. The essential tools are the Economic Cap Covering Theorem of Bárány and Larman, and the Efron-Stein jackknife inequality.

The mean width of random polytopes circumscribed around a convex body

Let K be a d-dimensional convex body, and let $K^{(n)}$ be the intersection of n halfspaces containing $K$ whose bounding hyperplanes are independent and identically distributed. Under suitable distributional assumptions, we prove an asymptotic formula for the expectation of the difference of the mean widths of $K^{(n)}$ and K, and another asymptotic formula for the expectation of the number of facets of $K^{(n)}$. These results are achieved by establishing an asymptotic result on weighted volume approximation of $K$ and by "dualizing" it using polarity.
