Black hole sensitivities in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

The post-Newtonian dynamics of black hole binaries in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theories of gravity depends on the so-called "sensitivities", quantities which characterize a black hole's adiabatic response to the time-dependent scalar field environment sourced by its companion. In this work, we calculate numerically the sensitivities of nonrotating black holes, including spontaneously scalarized ones, in three classes of Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity: the shift-symmetric, dilatonic and Gaussian theories. When possible, we compare our results against perturbative analytical results, finding excellent agreement. Unlike their general relativistic counterparts, black holes in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity only exist in a restricted parameter space controlled by the theory's coupling constant. A preliminary study of the role played by the sensitivities in black hole binaries suggests that, in principle, black holes can be driven outside of their domain of existence during the inspiral, for binary parameters which we determine.

$d+1$ formalism in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

We present the $d+1$ formulation of Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet (ESGB) theories in dimension $D=d+1$ and for arbitrary (spacelike or timelike) slicings. We first build an action which generalizes those of Gibbons-Hawking-York and Myers to ESGB theories, showing that they can be described by a Dirichlet variational principle. We then generalize the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) Lagrangian and Hamiltonian to ESGB theories, as well as the resulting $d+1$ decomposition of the equations of motion. Unlike general relativity, the canonical momenta of ESGB theories are nonlinear in the extrinsic curvature. This has two main implications: (i) the ADM Hamiltonian is generically multivalued, and the associated Hamiltonian evolution is not predictable; (ii) the "$d+1$" equations of motion are quasilinear, and they may break down in strongly curved, highly dynamical regimes. Our results should be useful to guide future developments of numerical relativity for ESGB gravity in the nonperturbative regime.

Einstein-Katz action, variational principle, Noether charges and the thermodynamics of AdS-black holes

In this paper we describe 4-dimensional gravity coupled to scalar and Maxwell fields by the Einstein-Katz action, that is, the covariant version of the "Gamma-Gamma $-$ Gamma-Gamma" part of the Hilbert action supplemented by the divergence of a generalized "Katz vector". We consider static solutions of Einstein's equations, parametrized by some integration constants, which describe an ensemble of asymptotically AdS black holes. Instead of the usual Dirichlet boundary conditions, which aim at singling out a specific solution within the ensemble, we impose that the variation of the action vanishes on shell for the broadest possible class of solutions. We will see that, when a long-range scalar "hair" is present, only sub-families of the solutions can obey that criterion. The Katz-Bicak-Lynden-Bell ("KBL") superpotential built on this (generalized) vector will then give straightforwardly the Noether charges associated with the spacetime symmetries (that is, in the static case, the mass). Computing the action on shell, we will see next that the solutions which obey the imposed variational principle, and with Noether charges given by the KBL superpotential, satisfy the Gibbs relation, the Katz vectors playing the role of "counterterms". Finally, we show on the specific example of dyonic black holes that the sub-class selected by our variational principle satisfies the first law of thermodynamics when their mass is defined by the KBL superpotential.
