A posteriori analysis for a mixed FEM discretization of the linear elasticity spectral problem

In this paper we analyze a posteriori error estimates for a mixed formulation of the linear elasticity eigenvalue problem. A posteriori estimators for the nearly and perfectly compressible elasticity spectral problems are proposed. With a post-process argument, we are able to prove reliability and efficiency for the proposed estimators. The numerical method is based in Raviart-Thomas elements to approximate the pseudostress and piecewise polynomials for the displacement. We illustrate our results with numerical tests.

A posteriori virtual element method for the acoustic vibration problem

In two dimensions, we propose and analyze an a posteriori error estimator for the acoustic spectral problem based on the virtual element method in $\H(÷;Ω)$. Introducing an auxiliary unknown, we use the fact that the primal formulation of the acoustic problem is equivalent to a mixed formulation, in order to prove a superconvergence result, necessary to despise high order terms. Under the virtual element approach, we prove that our local indicator is reliable and globally efficient in the $Ł^2$-norm. We provide numerical results to assess the performance of the proposed error estimator.

An Optimal Control Problem for the Navier--Stokes Equations with Point Sources

We analyze, in two dimensions, an optimal control problem for the Navier--Stokes equations where the control variable corresponds to the amplitude of forces modeled as point sources; control constraints are also considered. This particular setting leads to solutions to the state equation exhibiting reduced regularity properties. We operate under the framework of Muckenhoupt weights, Muckenhoupt-weighted Sobolev spaces, and the corresponding weighted norm inequalities and derive the existence of optimal solutions and first and, necessary and sufficient, second order optimality conditions.

Error estimates for a vorticity-based velocity-stress formulation of the Stokes eigenvalue problem

The aim of this paper is to analyze a mixed formulation for the two dimensional Stokes eigenvalue problem where the unknowns are the stress and the velocity, whereas the pressure can be recovered with a simple postprocess of the stress. The stress tensor is written in terms of the vorticity of the fluid, leading to an alternative mixed formulation that incorporates this physical feature. We propose a mixed numerical method where the stress is approximated with suitable Nédelec finite elements, whereas the velocity is approximated with piecewise polynomials of degree $k\geq 0$. With the aid of the compact operators theory we derive convergence of the method and spectral correctness. Moreover, we propose a reliable and efficient a posteriori error estimator for our spectral problem. We report numerical tests in different domains, computing the spectrum and convergence orders, together with a computational analysis for the proposed estimator. In addition, we use the corresponding error estimator to drive an adaptive scheme, and we report the results of a numerical test, that allow us to assess the performance of this approach.

Analysis of an abstract mixed formulation for viscoelastic problems

This study provides an abstract framework to analyze mixed formulations in viscoelasticity, in the classic saddle point form. Standard hypothesis for mixed methods are adapted to the Volterra type equations in order to obtain stability of the proposed problem. Error estimates are derived for suitable finite element spaces. We apply the developed theory to a bending moment formulation for a linear viscoelastic Timoshenko beam and for the Laplace operator with memory terms. For both problems we report numerical results to asses the performance of the methods.

Mixed methods for the velocity-pressure-pseudostress formulation of the Stokes eigenvalue problem

In two and three dimensional domains, we analyze mixed finite element methods for a velocity-pressure-pseudostress formulation of the Stokes eigenvalue problem. The methods consist in two schemes: the velocity and pressure are approximated with piecewise polynomial and for the pseudostress we consider two classic families of finite elements for $\mathrm{H}(\mathop{\mathrm{div}})$ spaces: the Raviart-Thomas and the Brezzi-Douglas Marini elements. With the aid of the classic spectral theory for compact operators, we prove that our method does not introduce spurious modes. Also, we obtain convergence and error estimates for the proposed methods. In order to assess the performance of the schemes, we report numerical results to compare the accuracy and robustness between both numerical schemes.

A priori error analysis for a mixed VEM discretization of the spectral problem for the Laplacian operator

The aim of the present work is to derive a error estimates for the Laplace eigenvalue problem in mixed form, by means of a virtual element method. With the aid of the theory for non-compact operators, we prove that the proposed method is spurious free and convergent. We prove optimal order error estimates for the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. Finally, we report numerical tests to confirm the theoretical results together with a rigorous computational analysis of the effects of the stabilization in the computation of the spectrum.

A virtual element method for the Steklov eigenvalue problem allowing small edges

The aim of this paper is to analyze the influence of small edges in the computation of the spectrum of the Steklov eigenvalue problem by a lowest order virtual element method. Under weaker assumptions on the polygonal meshes, which can permit arbitrarily small edges with respect to the element diameter, we show that the scheme provides a correct approximation of the spectrum and prove optimal error estimates for the eigenfunctions and a double order for the eigenvalues. Finally, we report some numerical tests supporting the theoretical results.

Acoustic vibration problem for dissipative fluids

In this paper we analyze a finite element method for solving a quadratic eigenvalue problem derived from the acoustic vibration problem for a heterogeneous dissipative fluid. The problem is shown to be equivalent to the spectral problem for a noncompact operator and athorough spectral characterization is given. The numerical discretization of the problem is based on Raviart-Thomas finite elements. The method is proved to be free of spurious modes and to converge with optimal order. Finally, we report numerical tests which allow us to assess the performance of the method.
