Modulation of ionic conduction using polarizable surfaces

Hybrid ionic-electronic conductors have the potential to generate memory effects and neuronal behavior. The functionality of these mixed materials depends on ion motion through thin polarizable channels. Here, we explore different polarization models to show that the current and conductivity of electrolytes is higher when confined by conductors than by dielectrics. We find non-linear currents in both dielectrics and conductors, and we recover the known linear (Ohmic) result only in the two-dimensional limit between conductors. We show that the polarization charge location impacts electrolyte structure and transport properties. This work suggests a mechanism to induce memristor hysteresis loops using conductor-dielectric switchable materials.

Assisted crystal growing by tempering metastable vapor-liquid fluids

The metastable vapor-liquid coexistence of short-range attractive fluids hinders the formation of crystal nuclei, which in turn makes difficult the progress of the system towards its vapor-solid ground state. In this letter we show that crystal growth can be assisted by imposing temperature fluctuations. By so doing the obtained solid is nearly a fcc monocrystal in contrast with the extreme polycrystalline structure obtained at low temperatures. The study is carried out by combining the replica exchange Monte Carlo method and the standard slab technique. The obtained results suggest a pathway for growing coherent crystals from the metastable liquid. This is particularly relevant for the crystallization of globular proteins.

Entropy driven key-lock assembly

The effective interaction between a sphere with an open cavity (lock) and a spherical macroparticle (key), both immersed in a hard sphere fluid, is studied by means of Monte Carlo simulations. As a result, a 2d map of the key-lock effective interaction potential is constructed, which leads to the proposal of a self-assembling mechanism: there exists trajectories through which the key-lock pair could assemble avoiding trespassing potential barriers. Hence, solely the entropic contribution can induce their self-assembling even in the absence of attractive forces. This study points out the solvent contribution within the underlying mechanisms of substrate-protein assembly/disassembly processes, which are important steps of the enzyme catalysis and protein mediated transport.
