Force Correlations in Disordered Magnets

We present a proof of principle for the validity of the functional renormalization group, by measuring the force correlations in Barkhausen-noise experiments. Our samples are soft ferromagnets in two distinct universality classes, differing in the range of spin interactions, and the effects of eddy currents. We show that the force correlations have a universal form predicted by the functional renormalization group, distinct for short-range and long-range elasticity, and mostly independent of eddy currents. In all cases correlations grow linearly at small distances, as in mean-field models, but in contrast to the latter are bounded at large distances. As a consequence, avalanches are anti-correlated. We derive bounds for these anti-correlations, which are saturated in the experiments, showing that the multiple domain walls in our samples effectively behave as a single wall.

Tailoring anomalous Nernst effect in stressed magnetostrictive film grown onto flexible substrate

The anomalous Nernst effect in nanostructured magnetic materials is a key phenomenon to optimally control and employ the internal energy dissipated in electronic devices, being dependent on for instance the magnetic anisotropy of the active element. Thereby, here we report a theoretical and experimental investigation of the magnetic properties and anomalous Nernst effect in a flexible magnetostrictive film with induced uniaxial magnetic anisotropy and under external stress. Specifically, we calculate the magnetization behavior and the thermoelectric voltage response from a theoretical approach for a planar geometry and with a magnetic free energy density which takes into account the induced uniaxial and magnetoelastic anisotropy contributions. Experimentally, we verify modifications of the effective magnetic anisotropy and thermoelectric voltage with the stress and explore the possibility of tailoring the anomalous Nernst effect in a flexible magnetostrictive film by modifying both, the magnetic field and external stress. We find quantitative agreement between experiment and numerical calculations, thus elucidating the magnetic and thermoelectric voltage behaviors, as well as providing evidence to confirm the validity of the theoretical approach to describe the magnetic properties and anomalous Nernst effect in ferromagnetic magnetostrictive films having uniaxial magnetic anisotropy and submitted to external stress. Hence, the results place flexible magnetostrictive systems as a promising candidate for active elements in functionalized touch electronic devices.

Universal properties of magnetization dynamics in polycrystalline ferromagnetic films

We investigate the scaling behavior in the statistical properties of Barkhausen noise in ferromagnetic films. We apply the statistical treatment usually employed for bulk materials in experimental Barkhausen noise time series measured with the traditional inductive technique in polycrystalline ferromagnetic films having different thickness from 100 up to 1000 nm, and investigate the scaling exponents. Based on this procedure, we can group the samples in a single universality class, characterized by exponents τ\sim 1.5, α\sim 2.0, and 1/σνz \sim \vartheta \sim 2.0. We interpret these results in terms of theoretical models and provide experimental evidence that a well-known mean-field model for the dynamics of a ferromagnetic domain wall in three-dimensional ferromagnets can be extended for films. We identify that the films present an universal three-dimensional magnetization dynamics, governed by long-range dipolar interactions, even at the smallest thicknesses, indicating that the two-dimensional magnetic behavior commonly verified for films cannot be generalized for all thickness ranges.

Beyond power laws: Universality in the average avalanche shape

We report the measurement of multivariable scaling functions for the temporal average shape of Barkhausen noise avalanches, and show that they are consistent with the predictions of simple mean-field theories. We bypass the confounding factors of time-retarded interactions (eddy currents) by measuring thin permal- loy films, and bypass thresholding effects and amplifier distortions by applying Wiener deconvolution. We find experimental shapes that are approximately symmetric, and track the evolution of the scaling function. We solve a mean- field theory for the magnetization dynamics and calculate the form of the scaling function in the presence of a demagnetizing field and a finite field ramp-rate, yielding quantitative agreement with the experiment.
