Non-aligned supervision for Real Image Dehazing

Removing haze from real-world images is challenging due to unpredictable weather conditions, resulting in the misalignment of hazy and clear image pairs. In this paper, we propose an innovative dehazing framework that operates under non-aligned supervision. This framework is grounded in the atmospheric scattering model, and consists of three interconnected networks: dehazing, airlight, and transmission networks. In particular, we explore a non-alignment scenario that a clear reference image, unaligned with the input hazy image, is utilized to supervise the dehazing network. To implement this, we present a multi-scale reference loss that compares the feature representations between the referred image and the dehazed output. Our scenario makes it easier to collect hazy/clear image pairs in real-world environments, even under conditions of misalignment and shift views. To showcase the effectiveness of our scenario, we have collected a new hazy dataset including 415 image pairs captured by mobile Phone in both rural and urban areas, called "Phone-Hazy". Furthermore, we introduce a self-attention network based on mean and variance for modeling real infinite airlight, using the dark channel prior as positional guidance. Additionally, a channel attention network is employed to estimate the three-channel transmission. Experimental results demonstrate the superior performance of our framework over existing state-of-the-art techniques in the real-world image dehazing task. EAA-Net: Rethinking the Autoencoder Architecture with Intra-class Features for Medical Image Segmentation

Automatic image segmentation technology is critical to the visual analysis. The autoencoder architecture has satisfying performance in various image segmentation tasks. However, autoencoders based on convolutional neural networks (CNN) seem to encounter a bottleneck in improving the accuracy of semantic segmentation. Increasing the inter-class distance between foreground and background is an inherent characteristic of the segmentation network. However, segmentation networks pay too much attention to the main visual difference between foreground and background, and ignores the detailed edge information, which leads to a reduction in the accuracy of edge segmentation. In this paper, we propose a light-weight end-to-end segmentation framework based on multi-task learning, termed Edge Attention autoencoder Network (EAA-Net), to improve edge segmentation ability. Our approach not only utilizes the segmentation network to obtain inter-class features, but also applies the reconstruction network to extract intra-class features among the foregrounds. We further design a intra-class and inter-class features fusion module -- I2 fusion module. The I2 fusion module is used to merge intra-class and inter-class features, and use a soft attention mechanism to remove invalid background information. Experimental results show that our method performs well in medical image segmentation tasks. EAA-Net is easy to implement and has small calculation cost.

Industrial Style Transfer with Large-scale Geometric Warping and Content Preservation

We propose a novel style transfer method to quickly create a new visual product with a nice appearance for industrial designers' reference. Given a source product, a target product, and an art style image, our method produces a neural warping field that warps the source shape to imitate the geometric style of the target and a neural texture transformation network that transfers the artistic style to the warped source product. Our model, Industrial Style Transfer (InST), consists of large-scale geometric warping (LGW) and interest-consistency texture transfer (ICTT). LGW aims to explore an unsupervised transformation between the shape masks of the source and target products for fitting large-scale shape warping. Furthermore, we introduce a mask smoothness regularization term to prevent the abrupt changes of the details of the source product. ICTT introduces an interest regularization term to maintain important contents of the warped product when it is stylized by using the art style image. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that InST achieves state-of-the-art performance on multiple visual product design tasks, e.g., companies' snail logos and classical bottles (please see Fig. 1). To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to extend the neural style transfer method to create industrial product appearances. Project page: \ulr{https://jcyang98.github.io/InST/home.html}. TranSiam: Fusing Multimodal Visual Features Using Transformer for Medical Image Segmentation

Automatic segmentation of medical images based on multi-modality is an important topic for disease diagnosis. Although the convolutional neural network (CNN) has been proven to have excellent performance in image segmentation tasks, it is difficult to obtain global information. The lack of global information will seriously affect the accuracy of the segmentation results of the lesion area. In addition, there are visual representation differences between multimodal data of the same patient. These differences will affect the results of the automatic segmentation methods. To solve these problems, we propose a segmentation method suitable for multimodal medical images that can capture global information, named TranSiam. TranSiam is a 2D dual path network that extracts features of different modalities. In each path, we utilize convolution to extract detailed information in low level stage, and design a ICMT block to extract global information in high level stage. ICMT block embeds convolution in the transformer, which can extract global information while retaining spatial and detailed information. Furthermore, we design a novel fusion mechanism based on cross attention and selfattention, called TMM block, which can effectively fuse features between different modalities. On the BraTS 2019 and BraTS 2020 multimodal datasets, we have a significant improvement in accuracy over other popular methods.

ROSE: Real One-Stage Effort to Detect the Fingerprint Singular Point Based on Multi-scale Spatial Attention

Detecting the singular point accurately and efficiently is one of the most important tasks for fingerprint recognition. In recent years, deep learning has been gradually used in the fingerprint singular point detection. However, current deep learning-based singular point detection methods are either two-stage or multi-stage, which makes them time-consuming. More importantly, their detection accuracy is yet unsatisfactory, especially in the case of the low-quality fingerprint. In this paper, we make a Real One-Stage Effort to detect fingerprint singular points more accurately and efficiently, and therefore we name the proposed algorithm ROSE for short, in which the multi-scale spatial attention, the Gaussian heatmap and the variant of focal loss are applied together to achieve a higher detection rate. Experimental results on the datasets FVC2002 DB1 and NIST SD4 show that our ROSE outperforms the state-of-art algorithms in terms of detection rate, false alarm rate and detection speed.

Core-genome scaffold comparison reveals the prevalence that inversion events are associated with pairs of inverted repeats

Motivation: Genome rearrangement plays an important role in evolutionary biology and has profound impacts on phenotype in organisms ranging from microbes to humans. The mechanisms for genome rearrangement events remain unclear. Lots of comparisons have been conducted among different species. To reveal the mechanisms for rearrangement events, comparison of different individuals/strains within the same species or genus (pan-genomes) is more helpful since they are much closer to each other. Results: We study the mechanism for inversion events via core-genome scaffold comparison of different strains within the same species. We focus on two kinds of bacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli, and investigate the inversion events among different strains of the same specie. We find an interesting phenomenon that long (larger than 10,000 bp) inversion regions are flanked by a pair of Inverted Repeats (IRs) (with lengths ranging from 385 bp to 27476 bp) which are often Insertion Sequences (ISs).This mechanism can also explain why the breakpoint reuses for inversion events happen. We study the prevalence of the phenomenon and find that it is a major mechanism for inversions. The other observation is that for different rearrangement events such as transposition and inverted block interchange, the two ends of the swapped regions are also associated with repeats so that after the rearrangement operations the two ends of the swapped regions remain unchanged. To our knowledge, this is the first time such a phenomenon is reported for transposition event.
