Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence and Hodge cohomology of classifying stacks

Let $G$ be a smooth connected reductive group over a field $k$ and $Γ$ be a central subgroup of $G$. We construct Eilenberg-Moore-type spectral sequences converging to the Hodge and de Rham cohomology of $B(G/Γ)$. As an application, building upon work of Toda and using Totaro's inequality, we show that for all $m\geq 0$ the Hodge and de Rham cohomology algebras of the classifying stacks $B\mathrm{PGL}_{4m+2}$ and $B\mathrm{PSO}_{4m+2}$ over $\mathbb{F}_2$ are isomorphic to the singular $\mathbb{F}_2$-cohomology of the classifying space of the corresponding Lie group. From this we obtain a full description of $H^{>0}(\mathrm{GL}_{4m+2}, \operatorname{Sym}^j(\mathfrak{pgl}_{4m+2}^\vee))$ and $H^{>0}(\mathrm{SO}_{4m+2}, \operatorname{Sym}^j(\mathfrak{pso}_{4m+2}^\vee))$ over $\mathbb{F}_2$.

Essential dimension of representations of algebras

Let $k$ be a field, $A$ a finitely generated associative $k$-algebra and $\operatorname{Rep}_A[n]$ the functor $\operatorname{Fields}_k\to \operatorname{Sets}$, which sends a field $K$ containing $k$ to the set of isomorphism classes of representations of $A_K$ of dimension at most $n$. We study the asymptotic behavior of the essential dimension of this functor, i.e., the function $r_A(n) := \operatorname{ed}_k(\operatorname{Rep}_A[n])$, as $n\to\infty$. In particular, we show that the rate of growth of $r_A(n)$ determines the representation type of $A$. That is, $r_A(n)$ is bounded from above if $A$ is of finite representation type, grows linearly if $A$ is of tame representation type and grows quadratically if A is of wild representation type. Moreover, $r_A(n)$ is a finer invariant of A, which allows us to distinguish among algebras of the same representation type.

On the essential dimension of an algebraic group whose connected component is a torus

Let $p$ be a prime integer, $k$ be a $p$-closed field of characteristic $\neq p$, $T$ be a torus defined over $k$, $F$ be a finite $p$-group, and $1\to T \to G \to F \to 1$ be an exact sequence of algebraic groups. Extending earlier work of N. Karpenko and A. Merkurjev, R. Lötscher, M. MacDonald, A. Meyer, and the first author showed that \[\min\dim(V) - \min\dim(G) \leqslant \text{ed}(G; p) \leqslant \min \dim(W) - \dim(G),\] where $V$ and $W$ range over the $p$-faithful and $p$-generically free $k$-representations of $G$, respectively. They conjectured that the upper bound is, in fact, sharp. This conjecture has remained open for some time. We prove it in the case, where $F$ is diagonalizable.

Retract rationality and algebraic tori

For any prime number $p$ and field $k$, we characterize the $p$-retract rationality of an algebraic $k$-torus in terms of its character lattice. We show that a $k$-torus is retract rational if and only if it is $p$-retract rational for every prime $p$, and that the Noether problem for retract rationality for a group of multiplicative type $G$ has an affirmative answer for $G$ if and only if the Noether problem for $p$-retract rationality for $G$ have a positive answer for all $p$. For every finite set of primes $S$ we give examples of tori that are $p$-retract rational if and only if $p\notin S$.

On the Noether Problem for torsion subgroups of tori

We consider the Noether Problem for stable and retract rationality for the sequence of $d$-torsion subgroups $T[d]$ of a torus $T$, $d\geq 1$. We show that the answer to these questions only depends on $d\pmod{e(T)}$, where $e(T)$ is the period of the generic $T$-torsor. When $T$ is the norm one torus associated to a finite Galois extension, we find all $d$ such that the Noether Problem for retract rationality has a positive solution for $d$. We also give an application to the Grothendieck ring of stacks.
