Hölder continuity of weak solutions to the thin-film equation in $d=2$

The thin-film equation $\partial_t u = -\nabla \cdot (u^n \nabla Δu)$ describes the evolution of the height $u=u(x,t)\geq 0$ of a viscous thin liquid film spreading on a flat solid surface. We prove Hölder continuity of energy-dissipating weak solutions to the thin-film equation in the physically most relevant case of two spatial dimensions $d=2$. While an extensive existence theory of weak solutions to the thin-film equation was established more than two decades ago, even boundedness of weak solutions in $d=2$ has remained a major unsolved problem in the theory of the thin-film equation. Due the fourth-order structure of the thin-film equation, De Giorgi-Nash-Moser theory is not applicable. Our proof is based on the hole-filling technique, the challenge being posed by the degenerate parabolicity of the fourth-order PDE.

Well-posedness for a regularised inertial Dean-Kawasaki model for slender particles in several space dimensions

A stochastic PDE, describing mesoscopic fluctuations in systems of weakly interacting inertial particles of finite volume, is proposed and analysed in any finite dimension $d\in\mathbb{N}$. It is a regularised and inertial version of the Dean-Kawasaki model. A high-probability well-posedness theory for this model is developed. This theory improves significantly on the spatial scaling restrictions imposed in an earlier work of the same authors, which applied only to significantly larger particles in one dimension. The well-posedness theory now applies in $d$-dimensions when the particle-width $ε$ is proportional to $N^{-1/θ}$ for $θ>2d$ and $N$ is the number of particles. This scaling is optimal in a certain Sobolev norm. Key tools of the analysis are fractional Sobolev spaces, sharp bounds on Bessel functions, separability of the regularisation in the $d$-spatial dimensions, and use of the Faà di Bruno's formula.

A nonlocal stochastic Cahn-Hilliard equation

We consider a stochastic extension of the nonlocal convective Cahn-Hilliard equation containing an additive Wiener process noise. We first introduce a suitable analytical setting and make some mathematical and physical assumptions. We then establish, in a variational context, the existence of a weak statistical solution for this problem. Finally we prove existence and uniqueness of a strong solution.
