Stochastic Optimal Control with Delay in the Control: solution through partial smoothing

Stochastic optimal control problems governed by delay equations with delay in the control are usually more difficult to study than the the ones when the delay appears only in the state. This is particularly true when we look at the associated Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation. Indeed, even in the simplified setting (introduced first by Vinter and Kwong for the deterministic case) the HJB equation is an infinite dimensional second order semilinear Partial Differential Equation (PDE) that does not satisfy the so-called "structure condition" which substantially means that "the noise enters the system with the control." The absence of such condition, together with the lack of smoothing properties which is a common feature of problems with delay, prevents the use of the known techniques (based on Backward Stochastic Differential Equations (BSDEs) or on the smoothing properties of the linear part) to prove the existence of regular solutions of this HJB equation and so no results on this direction have been proved till now. In this paper we provide a result on existence of regular solutions of such kind of HJB equations and we use it to solve completely the corresponding control problem finding optimal feedback controls also in the more difficult case of pointwise delay. The main tool used is a partial smoothing property that we prove for the transition semigroup associated to the uncontrolled problem. Such results holds for a specific class of equations and data which arises naturally in many applied problems.

A Bismut Elworthy formula for quadratic BSDEs

We consider a backward stochastic differential equation in a Markovian framework for the pair of processes $(Y,Z)$, with generator with quadratic growth with respect to $Z$. Under non-degeneracy assumptions, we prove an analogue of the well-known Bismut-Elworty formula when the generator has quadratic growth with respect to $Z$. Applications to the solution of a semilinear Kolmogorov equation for the unknown $v$ with nonlinear term with quadratic growth with respect to $\nabla v$ and final condition only bounded and continuous are given, as well as applications to stochastic optimal control problems with quadratic growth.

HJB equations in infinite dimensions under weak regularizing properties

We solve in mild sense Hamilton Jacobi Bellman equations, both in an infinite dimensional Hilbert space and in a Banach space, with lipschitz Hamiltonian and lipschitz continuous final condition, and asking only a weak regularizing property on the transition semigroup of the corresponding state equation. The results are applied to solve stochastic optimal control problems; the models we can treat include a controlled stochastic heat equation in space dimension one and with control and noise on a subdomain.

A note on the existence of solutions to Markovian superquadratic BSDEs with an unbounded terminal condition

In [Stochastc Process. Appl., 122(9):3173-3208], the author proved the existence and the uniqueness of solutions to Markovian superquadratic BSDEs with an unbounded terminal condition when the generator and the terminal condition are locally Lipschitz. In this paper, we prove that the existence result remains true for these BSDEs when the regularity assumptions on the terminal condition is weakened.

HJB equations in infinite dimension with locally Lipschitz Hamiltonian and unbounded terminal condition

We study Hamilton Jacobi Bellman equations in an infinite dimensional Hilbert space, with Lipschitz coefficients, where the Hamiltonian has superquadratic growth with respect to the derivative of the value function, and the final condition is not bounded. This allows to study stochastic optimal control problems for suitable controlled state equations with unbounded control processes. The results are applied to a controlled wave equation.

Hamilton Jacobi Bellman equations in infinite dimensions with quadratic and superquadratic Hamiltonian

We consider Hamilton Jacobi Bellman equations in an inifinite dimensional Hilbert space, with quadratic (respectively superquadratic) hamiltonian and with continuous (respectively lipschitz continuous) final conditions. This allows to study stochastic optimal control problems for suitable controlled Ornstein Uhlenbeck process with unbounded control processes.

A Stochastic Optimal Control Problem for the Heat Equation on the Halfline with Dirichlet Boundary-noise and Boundary-control

We consider a controlled state equation of parabolic type on the halfline $(0,+\infty)$ with boundary conditions of Dirichlet type in which the unknown is equal to the sum of the control and of a white noise in time. We study finite horizon and infinite horizon optimal control problem related by menas of backward stochastic differential equations.

Ergodic Optimal Quadratic Control for an Affine Equation with Stochastic and Stationary Coefficients

We study ergodic quadratic optimal stochastic control problems for an affine state equation with state and control dependent noise and with stochastic coefficients. We assume stationarity of the coefficients and a finite cost condition. We first treat the stationary case and we show that the optimal cost corresponding to this ergodic control problem coincides with the one corresponding to a suitable stationary control problem and we provide a full characterization of the ergodic optimal cost and control.

Infinite Horizon and Ergodic Optimal Quadratic Control for an Affine Equation with Stochastic Coefficients

We study quadratic optimal stochastic control problems with control dependent noise state equation perturbed by an affine term and with stochastic coefficients. Both infinite horizon case and ergodic case are treated. To this purpose we introduce a Backward Stochastic Riccati Equation and a dual backward stochastic equation, both considered in the whole time line. Besides some stabilizability conditions we prove existence of a solution for the two previous equations defined as limit of suitable finite horizon approximating problems. This allows to perform the synthesis of the optimal control.

Stochastic equations with delay: optimal control via BSDEs and regular solutions of Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations

We consider an Ito stochastic differential equation with delay, driven by brownian motion, whose solution, by an appropriate reformulation, defines a Markov process $X$ with values in a space of continuous functions $\mathbf C$, with generator $\mathcal L$. We then consider a backward stochastic differential equation depending on $X$, with unknown processes $(Y,Z)$, and we study properties of the resulting system, in particular we identify the process $Z$ as a deterministic functional of $X$. We next prove that the forward-backward system provides a suitable solution to a class of parabolic partial differential equations on the space $\mathbf C$ driven by $\mathcal L$, and we apply this result to prove a characterization of the fair price and the hedging strategy for a financial market with memory effects. We also include applications to optimal stochastic control of differential equation with delay: in particular we characterize optimal controls as feedback laws in terms the process $X$.
