The Dirac equation: historical context, comparisons with the Schrödinger and Klein-Gordon equations, and elementary consequences

This paper offers educational insight into the Dirac equation, examining its historical context and contrasting it with the earlier Schrödinger and Klein-Gordon (KG) equations. The comparison highlights their Lorentz transformation symmetry and potential probabilistic interpretations. We explicitly solve the free-particle dynamics in Dirac's model, revealing the emergence of negative-energy solutions. This discussion examines the Dirac Sea Hypothesis and explores the solutions' inherent helicity. Additionally, we demonstrate how the Dirac equation accounts for spin and derive the Pauli equation in the non-relativistic limit. The Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation reveals how the equation incorporates spin-orbit interaction and other relativistic effects, ultimately leading to the fine structure of hydrogen. A section on relativistic covariant notation is included to emphasize the invariance of the Dirac equation, along with more refined formulations of both the KG and Dirac equations. Designed for undergraduate students interested in the Dirac equation, this resource provides a historical perspective without being purely theoretical. Our approach underscores the significance of a pedagogical method that combines historical and comparative elements to profoundly understand the role of the Dirac equation in modern physics.

Average scattering entropy for periodic, aperiodic and random distribution of vertices in simple quantum graphs

This work deals with the average scattering entropy of quantum graphs. We explore this concept in several distinct scenarios that involve periodic, aperiodic and random distribution of vertices of distinct degrees. In particular, we compare distinct situations to see how they behave as we change the arrangements of vertices and the topology and geometry of the proposed structures. The results show that the average scattering entropy may depend on the number of vertices, and on the topological and geometrical disposition of vertices and edges of the quantum graph. In this sense, it can be seen as another tool to be used to explore geometric and topological effects of current interest for quantum systems.

Effects of quantum deformation on the Jaynes-Cummings and anti-Jaynes-Cummings models

The theory of non-Hermitian systems and the theory of quantum deformations have attracted a great deal of attention in the past decades. In general, non-Hermitian Hamiltonians are constructed by an ad hoc manner. Here, we study the (2+1) Dirac oscillator and show that in the context of the $κ$-deformed Poincaré-Hopf algebra its Hamiltonian is non-Hermitian but has real eigenvalues. The non-Hermiticity stems from the $κ$-deformed algebra. From the mapping in Bermudez et al., Phys. Rev. A 76, 041801(R) (2007), we propose the $κ$-Jaynes-Cummings and $κ$-anti-Jaynes-Cummings models, which describe an interaction between a two-level system with a quantized mode of an optical cavity in the $κ$-deformed context. We find that the $κ$-deformation modifies the Zitterbewegung frequencies and the collapses and revivals of quantum oscillations. In particular, the total angular momentum in the $z$ direction is not conserved anymore, as a direct consequence of the deformation.

Effects of quantum deformation on the integer quantum Hall effect

In this work an application of the $κ$--deformed algebra in condensed matter physics is presented. Starting by the $κ$--deformed Dirac equation we study the relativistic generalization of the $κ$--deformed Landau levels as well as the consequences of the deformation on the Hall conductivity. By comparing the $κ$--deformed Landau levels in the nonrelativistic regime with the energy levels of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in the presence of a normal magnetic field, upper bounds for the deformation parameter in different materials are established. An expression for the $κ$--deformed Hall conductivity of a 2DEG is obtained as well. The expression recovers the well-known result for the usual Hall conductivity in the limit $\varepsilon=κ^{-1}\to 0$. The deformation parameter breaks the Landau levels degeneracy and due to this, it is observed that deformation gives rise to new plateaus of conductivity in a such way that the plateaus widths of the $κ$--deformed Hall conductivity are less than the usual one. By studying the temperature dependence of the $κ$--deformed Hall conductivity, we show that an increase of the temperature causes the smearing of the plateaus and a diminution of the effect of the deformation, whilst an increase in the magnetic field enhances the effect of the deformation.

Green's function approach for quantum graphs: an overview

Here we review the many aspects and distinct phenomena associated to quantum dynamics on general graph structures. For so, we discuss such class of systems under the energy domain Green's function ($G$) framework. This approach is particularly interesting because $G$ can be written as a sum over classical-like paths, where local quantum effects are taking into account through the scattering matrix amplitudes (basically, transmission and reflection amplitudes) defined on each one of the graph vertices. Hence, the {\em exact} $G$ has the functional form of a generalized semiclassical formula, which through different calculation techniques (addressed in details here) always can be cast into a closed analytic expression. It allows to solve exactly arbitrary large (although finite) graphs in a recursive and fast way. Using the Green's function method, we survey many properties for open and closed quantum graphs as scattering solutions for the former and eigenspectrum and eigenstates for the latter, also considering quasi-bound states. Concrete examples, like cube, binary trees and Sierpiński-like topologies are presented. Along the work, possible distinct applications using the Green's function methods for quantum graphs are outlined.

Lorentz-violating effects in the spin-1/2 Aharonov-Casher problem

The effects of a Lorentz symmetry violating background vector on the Aharonov-Casher bound and scattering scenarios is considered. Using an approach based on the self-adjoint extension method, an expression for the bound state energies is obtained in terms of the physics of the problem by determining the self-adjoint extension parameter. We found that there is an additional scattering for any value of the self-adjoint extension parameter and bound states for negative values of this parameter. By comparing the bound state and scattering results the self-adjoint extension parameter is determined. Expressions for the bound state energies, phase-shift and the scattering matrix are explicitly determined in terms of the self-adjoint extension parameter. The expression obtained for the scattering amplitude reveals that the helicity is not conserved in this scenario.

Quantum motion of a point particle in the presence of the Aharonov--Bohm potential in curved space

The nonrelativistic quantum dynamics of a spinless charged particle in the presence of the Aharonov--Bohm potential in curved space is considered. We chose the surface as being a cone defined by a line element in polar coordinates. The geometry of this line element establishes that the motion of the particle can occur on the surface of a cone or an anti--cone. As a consequence of the nontrivial topology of the cone and also because of two--dimensional confinement, the geometric potential should be taken into account. At first, we establish the conditions for the particle describing a circular path in such a context. Because of the presence of the geometric potential, which contains a singular term, we use the self--adjoint extension method in order to describe the dynamics in all space including the singularity. Expressions are obtained for the bound state energies and wave functions.

Effects of spin on the dynamics of the 2D Dirac oscillator in the magnetic cosmic string background

In this work the dynamics of a 2D Dirac oscillator in the spacetime of a magnetic cosmic string is considered. It is shown that earlier approaches to this problem have neglected a $δ$ function contribution to the full Hamiltonian, which comes from the Zeeman interaction. The inclusion of spin effects leads to results which confirm a modified dynamics. Based on the self-adjoint extension method, we determined the most relevant physical quantities, such as energy spectrum, wave functions and the self-adjoint extension parameter by applying boundary conditions allowed by the system.

Exact Green's function for rectangular potentials and its application to quasi-bound states

In this work we calculate the exact Green's function for arbitrary rectangular potentials. Specifically we focus on Green's function for rectangular quantum wells enlarging the knowledge of exact solutions for Green's functions and also generalizing and resuming results in the literature. The exact formula has the form of a sum over paths and always can be cast into a closed analytic expression. From the poles and residues of the Green's function the bound states eigenenergies and eigenfunctions with the correct normalization constant are obtained. In order to show the versatility of the method, an application of the Green's function approach to extract information of quasi-bound states in rectangular barriers, where the standard analysis of quantum amplitudes fail, is presented.

Remarks on the Dirac oscillator in $(2+1)$ dimensions

In this work the Dirac oscillator in $(2+1)$ dimensions is considered. We solve the problem in polar coordinates and discuss the dependence of the energy spectrum on the spin parameter $s$ and angular momentum quantum number $m$. Contrary to earlier attempts, we show that the degeneracy of the energy spectrum can occur for all possible values of $sm$. In an additional analysis, we also show that an isolated bound state solution, excluded from Sturm-Liouville problem, exists.
