Equivalence of first and second order formulations of the Einstein-Hilbert theory

We derive a general relation between the background effective actions, which directly proves that the two formulations of the Einstein-Hilbert theory with background fields are equivalent at the quantum level. This basic result has been substantiated in a general background gauge, by explicit calculations at one-loop order of the corresponding counterterm Lagrangians.

Supergravity with Lagrange Multiplier Fields in 2 + 1 Dimensions

We examine the first-order Einstein-Cartan (EC) action in 2+1 dimensions, including a cosmological term and its supersymmetric extension. In this setting the spin connection can be expressed as an axial vector, yielding an action that is bilinear in the quantum fields and allows quantization without background fields. We identify the complete set of first-class constraints and derive the associated gauge transformations, which differ from the standard diffeomorphism and local Lorentz invariances. Using the closed gauge algebra, we construct the Faddeev-Popov-Nielsen path integral and show how a Lagrange multiplier field can be introduced to remove higher-loop contributions while preserving unitarity and gauge invariance.

Feynman diagrams in terms of on-shell propagators

It is shown that the usual expression for a Feynman diagram in terms of the Feynman propagator $Δ_F(x-y)$ can be replaced by an equivalent expression involving the positive-energy on-shell propagator $Δ^+(x-y)$, supplemented by appropriate functions associated with time-ordering. When this alternate way of expressing a Feynman diagram is Fourier transformed into momentum space, the momentum associated with each function $Δ^+(x-y)$ is on-shell, and is only conserved at each vertex if an energy is attributed to the contributions of the time-ordering functions. The resulting expression is analogous to what Kadyshevsky had obtained by deriving an alternate expansion for the $S$--matrix. A detailed explanation of how this alternate expansion is derived is given, and it is shown how it provides a straightforward way of determining the imaginary part of a Feynman diagram, which makes it useful when using unitarity methods for computing a Feynman diagram. By considering a number of specific Feynman diagrams in self-interacting scalar models and in QED, we show how this alternate approach can be related to the old perturbation theory and can simplify direct calculations of Feynman diagrams.

On the analytically-improved running coupling in QCD

We examine, in the `t Hooft renormalization scheme, the analytic running coupling $\barα_t(Q^2)$ in QCD, using the two-loop $β$-function with positive expansion parameters $β_0$ and $β_1$. An exact integral representation is derived for this causal coupling, which is fully expressed in terms of the imaginary part of the Lambert function $W$. This integral form manifestly accounts for the universal value of the infrared limit $\barα_t(Q^2=0)= 4 π/β_0$.

Quantum gravity in a general background gauge

We deduce, in a general background gauge, the counter-term Lagrangian for pure quantum gravity to one-loop order. As an application, we evaluate the leading quantum correction to the classical gravitational potential, generated by the vacuum polarization. We find that, in specific background gauges, this yields the complete result for the one-loop quantum corrections to the Newtonian potential. This approach is also applied to calculate the $\ln(T)$ contributions in quantum gravity at high-temperature.

Radiative Corrections and the Palatini Action

By using the Faddeev-Popov quantization procedure, we demonstrate that the radiative effects computed using the first-order and second-order Einstein-Hilbert action for General Relativity are the same, provided one can discard tadpoles. In addition, we show that the first order form of this action can be used to obtain a set of Feynman rules that involves just two propagating fields and three three-point vertices; using these rules is considerably simpler than employing the infinite number of vertices that occur in the second-order form. We demonstrate this by computing the one-loop, two-point function.

Structural identities in the first order formulation of quantum gravity

We study the self-consistency of the first order formulation of quantum gravity, which may be attained by introducing, apart from the graviton field, another auxiliary quantum field. By comparing the forms of the generating functional $Z$ before and after integrating out the additional field, we derive a set of structural identities which must be satisfied by the Green's functions at all orders. These are distinct from the usual Ward identities, being necessary for the self-consistency of the first order formalism. They relate the Green's functions involving the additional quantum field to those containing a certain composite graviton field, which corresponds to its classical value. Thereby, the structural identities lead to a simple interpretation of the auxiliary field.

Dual symmetry in a generalized Maxwell theory

We examine Podolsky's electrodynamics, which is noninvariant under the usual duality transformation. We deduce a generalization of Hodge's star duality, which leads to a dual gauge field and restores to a certain extent the dual symmetry. The model becomes fully dual symmetric asymptotically when it reduces to the Maxwell theory. We argue that this strict dual symmetry directly implies the existence of the basic invariants of the electromagnetic fields.

Classical Boltzmann equation and high-temperature QED

The equivalence between thermal field theory and the Boltzmann transport equation is investigated at higher orders in the context of quantum electrodynamics. We compare the contributions obtained from the collisionless transport equation with the high temperature limit of the one-loop thermal Green's function. Our approach employs the representation of the thermal Green's functions in terms of forward scattering amplitudes. The general structure of these amplitudes clearly indicates that the physics described by the leading high temperature limit of quantum electrodynamics can be obtained from the Boltzmann transport equation. We also present some explicit examples of this interesting equivalence.

Induced magnetic moment for a spinless charged particle in the thin-layer approach

We determine the effective dynamics for a spinless charged particle, in the presence of electromagnetic fields, constrained to a space curve. We employ the thin-layer procedure and a perturbative expansion for the Schrödinger equation is derived. We find that the first-order term in the perturbative expansion couples the dynamics of the normal and tangent degrees of freedom. However, there is always a gauge transformation that allows decouple the dynamics. We find that the effective Schrödinger equation in the curve contains an induced Zeeman coupling, independent of the curvature and torsion, which has not been previously reported. This coupling is characteristic of reducing the dimension by two and allows to identify an induced magnetic moment.

QED plasma in a background of static gravitational fields

We obtain the effective Lagrangian of static gravitational fields interacting with a QED plasma at high temperature. Using the equivalence between the static hard thermal loops and those with zero external energy-momentum, we compute the effective Lagrangian up to two-loop order. We also obtain a non-perturbative contribution which arises from the sum of all infrared divergent ring-diagrams. From the gauge and Weyl symmetries of the theory, we deduce to all orders that this effective Lagrangian is equivalent to the pressure of a QED plasma in Minkowski space-time, with the global temperature replaced by the Tolman local temperature.

preprint2012arXiv

High temperature limit in static backgrounds

We prove that the hard thermal loop contribution to static thermal amplitudes can be obtained by setting all the external four-momenta to zero before performing the Matsubara sums and loop integrals. At the one-loop order we do an iterative procedure for all the 1PI one-loop diagrams and at the two-loop order we consider the self-energy. Our approach is sufficiently general to the extent that it includes theories with any kind of interaction vertices, such as gravity in the weak field approximation, for $d$ space-time dimensions. This result is valid whenever the external fields are all bosonic.

Electrodynamics in a Background Chiral Field

We consider the one loop effective action in four dimensional Euclidean space for a background chiral field coupled to a spinor field. It proves possible to find an exact expression for this action if the mass $m$ of the spinor vanishes. If $m$ does not vanish, one can make a perturbative expansion in powers of the axial field that contributes to the chiral field, while treating the contribution of the vector field exactly when it is a constant. The analogous problem in two dimensions is also discussed.

Non-Quadratic Gauge Fixing and Ghosts for Gauge Theories on the Hypersphere

It has been suggested that using a gauge fixing Lagrangian that is not quadratic in a gauge fixing condition is most appropriate for gauge theories formulated on a hypersphere. We reexamine the appropriate ghost action that is to be associated with gauge fixing, applying a technique that has been used for ensuring that the propagator for a massless spin-two field is transverse and traceless. It is shown that this non-quadratic gauge fixing Lagrangian leads to two pair of complex Fermionic ghosts and two Bosonic real ghosts.

Pressure of massless hot scalar theory in the boundary effective theory framework

We use the boundary effective theory (BET) approach to thermal field theory in order to calculate the pressure of a system of massless scalar fields with quartic interaction. The method naturally separates the infrared physics, and is essentially non-perturbative. To lowest order, the main ingredient is the solution of the free Euler-Lagrange equation with non-trivial (time) boundary conditions. We derive a resummed pressure, which is in good agreement with recent calculations found in the literature, following a very direct and compact procedure.

Quantum statistical correlations in thermal field theories: boundary effective theory

We show that the one-loop effective action at finite temperature for a scalar field with quartic interaction has the same renormalized expression as at zero temperature if written in terms of a certain classical field $ϕ_c$, and if we trade free propagators at zero temperature for their finite-temperature counterparts. The result follows if we write the partition function as an integral over field eigenstates (boundary fields) of the density matrix element in the functional Schrödinger field-representation, and perform a semiclassical expansion in two steps: first, we integrate around the saddle-point for fixed boundary fields, which is the classical field $ϕ_c$, a functional of the boundary fields; then, we perform a saddle-point integration over the boundary fields, whose correlations characterize the thermal properties of the system. This procedure provides a dimensionally-reduced effective theory for the thermal system. We calculate the two-point correlation as an example.

Non-Quadratic Gauge Fixing and Global Gauge Invariance in the Effective Action

The possibility of having a gauge fixing term in the effective Lagrangian that is not a quadratic expression has been explored in spin-two theories so as to have a propagator that is both traceless and transverse. We first show how this same approach can be used in spontaneously broken gauge theories as an alternate to the 't Hooft gauge fixing which avoids terms quadratic in the scalar fields. This "non-quadratic" gauge fixing in the effective action results in there being two complex Fermionic and one real Bosonic ghost fields. A global gauge invariance involving a Fermionic gauge parameter, analogous to the usual BRST invariance, is present in this effective action.

Resummation of infrared divergences in the free-energy of spin-two fields

We derive a closed form expression for the sum of all the infrared divergent contributions to the free-energy of a gas of gravitons. An important ingredient of our calculation is the use of a gauge fixing procedure such that the graviton propagator becomes both traceless and transverse. This has been shown to be possible, in a previous work, using a general gauge fixing procedure, in the context of the lowest order expansion of the Einstein-Hilbert action, describing non-interacting spin two fields. In order to encompass the problems involving thermal loops, such as the resummation of the free-energy, in the present work, we have extended this procedure to the situations when the interactions are taken into account.

preprint1999arXiv

General structure of the graviton self-energy

The graviton self-energy at finite temperature depends on fourteen structure functions. We show that, in the absence of tadpoles, the gauge invariance of the effective action imposes three non-linear relations among these functions. The consequences of such constraints, which must be satisfied by the thermal graviton self-energy to all orders, are explicitly verified in general linear gauges to one loop order.

Retarded thermal Greens functions and forward scattering amplitudes at two loops

In this paper, we extend our earlier one loop analysis to two loops and give a simple diagrammatic description for the retarded Greens functions at finite temperature, in terms of forward scattering amplitudes of on-shell thermal particles. We present a simple discussion, which can be easily generalized to any field theory, of the temperature dependent parts of the retarded two and three point functions in scalar field theory and QED. As an application of our result at two loops, we show how the infrared singularities in the thermal part of the retarded photon self-energy, cancel in QED_2 in the limit of vanishing electron mass.

Retarded Greens Functions and Forward Scattering Amplitudes in Thermal Field Theory

In this paper, we give a simple diagrammatic identification of the unique combination of the causal n-point vertex functions in the real time formalism that would coincide with the corresponding functions obtained in the imaginary time formalism. Furthermore, we give a simple calculational method for evaluating the temperature dependent parts of the retarded vertex functions, to one loop, by identifying them with the forward scattering amplitudes of on-shell thermal particles. As an application of the method, we calculate and show that the temperature dependent parts of all the retarded functions vanish at one loop order for 1+1 dimensional massless QED. We further point out that, in this model, in fact, the temperature dependent parts of all the retarded vertex functions vanish to all orders in perturbation theory.
