Electric Field Induced Agglomeration of Nearly Ferroelectric Superconducting YBa2Cu3O7-d Powders

We report on the effect of agglomeration forced by strong electric field in fine particles of nearly ferroelectric YBa2Cu3O7-d superconductor. It turns out that the particles from agglomerates exhibit different morphology than the rest of powder that attaches to high-voltage electrodes. Study by means of electron paramagnetic resonance revealed in the powder attached to electrodes a narrow spectrum superimposed on Cu2+ anisotropic spectrum common for YBa2Cu3O7-d superconductors. We assume that this narrow spectrum originates from nanopolar regions generated by strong electric discharges taking place during the experiment. Consequently, the effect of agglomeration can be explained in terms of electrostatic interactions between the particles containing nanopolar regions with strong electric dipolar moments.

Morphology and magnetic properties of Fe3O4-alginic acid nanocomposites

Morphology, structure and magnetic properties of nanocomposites of magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles and alginic acid (AA) are studied. Magnetite Fe3O4 nanoparticles and the nanoparticles capped with alginic acid exhibit very distinct properties. The chemical bonding between alginic acid and surface of magnetite nanoparticles results in recovery of surface magnetization. On the other hand, it also leads to enhanced surface spin disorder and unconventional behavior of magnetization observed in Fe3O4-AA nanocomposites at low temperatures.

Synthesis and Properties of Bismuth Ferrite Multiferroic Nanoflowers

The method of microwave assisted hydrothermal synthesis of bismuth ferrite multiferroic nanoflowers, their mechanism of growth, magnetic as well as dielectric properties are presented. The nanoflowers are composed of numerous petals formed by BiFeO3 (BFO) nanocrystals and some amount of amorphous phase. The growth of the nanoflowers begins from the central part of calyx composed of only few petals towards which subsequent petals are successively attached. The nanoflowers exhibit enhanced magnetization due to size effect and lack of spin compensation in the spin cycloid. The dielectric properties of the nanoflowers are influenced by water confined to crystal nanovoids resulting in a broad dielectric permittivity maximum at 200 K ÷ 300 K and also by Polomska transition above the temperature of 450 K.
