A parton branching with transverse momentum dependent splitting functions

Off-shell, transverse-momentum dependent splitting functions can be defined from the high-energy limit of partonic decay amplitudes. Based on these splitting functions, we construct Sudakov form factors and formulate a new parton branching algorithm. We present a first Monte Carlo implementation of the algorithm. We use the numerical results to verify explicitly momentum sum rules for TMD parton distributions.

Azimuthal di-jet correlations with parton branching TMD distributions

The parton branching formulation of TMD evolution has recently been used to make predictions for jet observables at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), including perturbative matching at next-to-leading order (NLO). This contribution presents results for the azimuthal Δ-ϕcorrelations in events with di-jets at large transverse momentum. It focuses on the back-to-back region of large Δ-ϕand discusses prospects for detailed studies of QCD dynamics in this region at the LHC.

Back-to-back azimuthal correlations in Z+jet events at high transverse momentum in the TMD parton branching method at next-to-leading order

Azimuthal correlations in Z+jet production at large transverse momenta are computed by matching Parton - Branching (PB) TMD parton distributions and showers with NLO calculations via MCatNLO. The predictions are compared with those for dijet production in the same kinematic range. The azimuthal correlations $Δϕ$ between the Z boson and the leading jet are steeper compared to those in dijet production at transverse momenta ${\cal O}(100)$ GeV, while they become similar for very high transverse momenta ${\cal O}(1000)$ GeV. The different patterns of Z+jet and dijet azimuthal correlations can be used to search for potential {\it factorization - breaking} effects in the back-to-back region, which depend on the different color and spin structure of the final states and their interferences with the initial states. In order to investigate these effects experimentally, we propose to measure the ratio of the distributions in $Δϕ$ for Z+jet - and multijet production at low and at high transverse momenta, and compare the results to predictions obtained assuming factorization. We examine the role of theoretical uncertainties by performing variations of the factorization scale, renormalization scale and matching scale. In particular, we present a comparative study of matching scale uncertainties in the cases of PB-TMD and collinear parton showers.

Perturbative hysteresis and emergent resummation scales

We investigate hysteresis effects in the perturbative solution of renormalisation group equations (RGEs). We present examples for the QCD running coupling and proton's parton distribution functions (PDFs), relevant to precision physics at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and future collider experiments. We propose the use of resummation scales to take into account the theoretical uncertainties from the solution of the RGEs. As a case study, we consider the $F_2$ structure function in a region relevant to the extraction of PDFs.

xFitter: An Open Source QCD Analysis Framework. A resource and reference document for the Snowmass study

We provide an overview of the xFitter open-source software package, review the general capabilities of the program, and highlight applications relevant to the Snowmass study. An updated version of the program (2.2.0) is available on CERN GitLab, a and this has been updated to a C++ codebase with enhanced and extended features. We also discuss some of the ongoing and future code developments that may be useful for precision studies. We survey recent analyses performed by the xFitter developers' team including: W and Z production, photon PDFs, Drell-Yan forward-backward asymmetry studies, resummation of small-x contributions, heavy quark production, constraints on the strange PDF, determination of the pion PDF, and determination of the pion Fragmentation Functions. Finally, we briefly summarize selected applications of xFitter in the literature. The xFitter program is a versatile, flexible, modular, and comprehensive tool that can provide impact studies for possible future facilities. We encourage the use of xFitter, and welcome new contributions from the community.

Azimuthal correlations of high transverse momentum jets at next-to-leading order in the parton branching method

The azimuthal correlation, $Δϕ_{12}$, of high transverse momentum jets in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV is studied by applying PB-TMD distributions to NLO calculations via MCatNLO together with the PB-TMD parton shower. A very good description of the cross section as a function of $Δϕ_{12}$ is observed. In the back-to-back region of $Δϕ_{12} \to π$, a very good agreement is observed with the PB-TMD Set 2 distributions while significant deviations are obtained with the PB-TMD Set 1 distributions. Set 1 uses the evolution scale while Set 2 uses transverse momentum as an argument in $α_s$, and the above observation therefore confirms the importance of an appropriate soft-gluon coupling in angular ordered parton evolution. The total uncertainties of the predictions are dominated by the scale uncertainties of the matrix element, while the uncertainties coming from the PB-TMDs and the corresponding PB-TMD shower are very small. The $Δϕ_{12}$ measurements are also compared with predictions using MCatNLO together PYTHIA8, illustrating the importance of details of the parton shower evolution.

The transverse momentum spectrum of low mass Drell-Yan production at next-to-leading order in the parton branching method

It has been observed in the literature that measurements of low-mass Drell-Yan (DY) transverse momentum spectra at low center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}$ are not well described by perturbative QCD calculations in collinear factorization in the region where transverse momenta are comparable with the DY mass. We examine this issue from the standpoint of the Parton Branching (PB) method, combining next-to-leading-order (NLO) calculations of the hard process with the evolution of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distributions. We compare our predictions with experimental measurements at low DY mass, and find very good agreement. In addition we use the low mass DY measurements at low $\sqrt{s}$ to determine the width $q_s$ of the intrinsic Gauss distribution of the PB-TMDs at low evolution scales. We find values close to what has earlier been used in applications of PB -TMDs to high-energy processes at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and HERA. We find that at low DY mass and low $\sqrt{s}$ even in the region of $p_t/m_{DY} \sim 1$ the contribution of multiple soft gluon emissions (included in the PB-TMDs) is essential to describe themeasurements, while at larger masses ($m_{DY} \sim m_{Z}$) and LHC energies the contribution from soft gluons in the region of $p_t/m_{DY}\sim 1$ is small.

Dynamical resolution scale in transverse momentum distributions at the LHC

The QCD evolution of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) distribution functions has recently been formulated in a parton branching (PB) formalism. In this approach, soft-gluon coherence effects are taken into account by introducing the soft-gluon resolution scale and exploiting the relation between transverse-momentum recoils and branching scales. In this work we investigate the implications of dynamical, i.e., branching scale dependent, resolution scales. We present both analytical studies and numerical solution of PB evolution equations in the presence of dynamical resolution scales. We use this to compare PB results with other approaches in the literature, and to analyze predictions for transverse momentum distributions in $Z$-boson production at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

Production of Z'-Boson Resonances with Large Width at the LHC

Di-lepton searches for Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) Z' bosons that rely on the analysis of the Breit-Wigner (BW) line shape are appropriate in the case of narrow resonances, but likely not sufficient in scenarios featuring Z' states with large widths. Conversely, alternative experimental strategies applicable to wide Z' resonances are much more dependent than the default bump search analyses on the modelling of QCD higher-order corrections to the production processes, for both signal and background. For heavy Z' boson searches in the di-lepton channel at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the transverse momentum q_T of the di-lepton system peaks at q_T \ltap 10^{-2} M_{ll}, where M_{ll} is the di-lepton invariant mass. We exploit this to treat the QCD corrections by using the logarithmic resummation methods in M_{ll} / q_T to all orders in the strong coupling constant α_s. We carry out studies of Z' states with large width at the LHC by employing the program {\tt reSolve}, which performs QCD transverse momentum resummation up to Next-to-Next-to-Leading Logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy. We consider two benchmark BSM scenarios, based on the Sequential Standard Model (SSM) and dubbed `SSM wide' and `SSM enhanced'. We present results for the shape and size of Z' boson signals at the differential level, mapped in both cross section (σ) and Forward-Backward Asymmetry (A_{\rm FB}), and perform numerical investigations of the experimental sensitivity at the LHC Run 3 and High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC).

Summary of workshop on Future Physics with HERA Data

Recent highlights from the HERA experiments, Hermes, H1 and ZEUS, are reviewed and ideas for future analyses to fully exploit this unique data set are proposed. This document is a summary of a workshop on future physics with HERA data held at DESY, Hamburg at the end of 2014. All areas of HERA physics are covered and contributions from both experimentalists and theorists are included. The document outlines areas where HERA physics can still make a significant contribution, principally in a deeper understanding of QCD, and its relevance to other facilities. Within the framework of the Data Preservation in High Energy Physics, the HERA data have been preserved for analyses to take place over a timescale of 10 years and more. Therefore, although an extensive list of possibilities is presented here, safe storage of the data ensures that it can also be used in the far future should new ideas and analyses be proposed.

HERAFitter, Open Source QCD Fit Project

HERAFitter is an open-source package that provides a framework for the determination of the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton and for many different kinds of analyses in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). It encodes results from a wide range of experimental measurements in lepton-proton deep inelastic scattering and proton-proton (proton-antiproton) collisions at hadron colliders. These are complemented with a variety of theoretical options for calculating PDF-dependent cross section predictions corresponding to the measurements. The framework covers a large number of the existing methods and schemes used for PDF determination. The data and theoretical predictions are brought together through numerous methodological options for carrying out PDF fits and plotting tools to help visualise the results. While primarily based on the approach of collinear factorisation, HERAFitter also provides facilities for fits of dipole models and transverse-momentum dependent PDFs. The package can be used to study the impact of new precise measurements from hadron colliders. This paper describes the general structure of HERAFitter and its wide choice of options.

Transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions: status and prospects

We provide a concise overview on transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions, their application to topical issues in high-energy physics phenomenology, and their theoretical connections with QCD resummation, evolution and factorization theorems. We illustrate the use of TMDs via examples of multi-scale problems in hadronic collisions. These include transverse momentum q_T spectra of Higgs and vector bosons for low q_T, and azimuthal correlations in the production of multiple jets associated with heavy bosons at large jet masses. We discuss computational tools for TMDs, and present an application of a new tool, TMDlib, to parton density fits and parameterizations.

Treating jet correlations in high pile-up at hadron colliders

Experiments in the high-luminosity runs at the Large Hadron Collider face the challenges of very large pile-up. Primary techniques to deal with this are based on precise vertex and track reconstruction. Outside tracker acceptances, however, lie regions of interest for many aspects of the LHC physics program. We explore complementary approaches to pile-up treatment and propose a data-driven jet-mixing method which can be used outside tracker acceptances without depending on Monte Carlo generators. The method can be applied to treat correlation observables and take into account, besides the jet transverse momentum pedestal, effects of hard jets from pile-up.

Hadroproduction of electroweak gauge boson plus jets and TMD parton density functions

If studies of electroweak gauge boson final states at the Large Hadron Collider, for Standard Model physics and beyond, are sensitive to effects of the initial state's transverse momentum distribution, appropriate generalizations of QCD shower evolution are required. We propose a method to do this based on QCD transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization at high energy. The method incorporates experimental information from the high-precision deep inelastic scattering (DIS) measurements, and includes experimental and theoretical uncertainties on TMD parton density functions. We illustrate the approach presenting results for production of W-boson + n jets at the LHC, including azimuthal correlations and subleading jet distributions.

Higgs boson as a gluon trigger: the study of QCD in high pile-up environments

In the forthcoming high-luminosity phase of the LHC many of the most interesting measurements for precision QCD studies are hampered by large pile-up conditions, especially at not very high transverse momenta. However, with the recently discovered Higgs boson, which couples in the heavy top limit directly to gluons, we have access to a novel production process to probe QCD by a colour-singlet current. In this study we compare observables in Higgs boson and Drell-Yan production and investigate whether measuring ratios or subtractions can yield results that are stable in high pile-up environments, and yet sensitive to (small-$p_{\text{T}}$) QCD physics in gluon fusion processes. We present results of Monte Carlo event generator calculations for a few specific examples.

Precision DIS data and TMD parton distributions

General formulations of QCD factorization for hadronic collisions extend the notion of ordinary parton distributions to transverse-momentum dependent (TMD) parton density and parton decay functions. We discuss the use of the recent high-precision deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) measurements for determination of TMD distributions. These are relevant for both low-pT and high-pT physics in hadron collisions. We comment on applications to multi-jet final states associated with electroweak gauge boson production at the LHC.

TMDlib and TMDplotter: library and plotting tools for transverse-momentum-dependent parton distributions

Transverse-momentum-dependent distributions (TMDs) are central in high-energy physics from both theoretical and phenomenological points of view. In this manual we introduce the library, TMDlib, of fits and parameterisations for transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions (TMD PDFs) and fragmentation functions (TMD FFs) together with an online plotting tool, TMDplotter. We provide a description of the program components and of the different physical frameworks the user can access via the available parameterisations.

Transverse momentum dependent gluon density from DIS precision data

The combined measurements of proton's structure functions in deeply inelastic scattering at the HERA collider provide high-precision data capable of constraining parton density functions over a wide range of the kinematic variables. We perform fits to these data using transverse momentum dependent QCD factorization and CCFM evolution. The results of the fits to precision measurements are used to make a determination of the nonperturbative transverse momentum dependent gluon density function, including experimental and theoretical uncertainties. We present an application of this density function to vector boson + jet production processes at the LHC.

Higgs as a gluon trigger

In the forthcoming high-luminosity phase at the LHC many of the most interesting measurements for precision QCD studies are hampered by conditions of large pile-up, particularly at not very high transverse momenta. We study observables based on measuring ratios of color-singlet currents via Higgs boson and Drell-Yan production, which may be accessed also at large pile-up, and used for an experimental program on QCD physics of gluon fusion processes in the LHC high-luminosity runs. We present results of Monte Carlo calculations for a few specific examples.

Longitudinal momentum shifts, showering and nonperturbative corrections in matched NLO-shower event generators

Comparisons of experimental data with theoretical predictions for collider processes containing hadronic jets rely on shower Monte Carlo event generators to include corrections to perturbative calculations from hadronization, parton showering, multiple parton collisions. We examine current treatments of these corrections and propose alternative methods to take into account nonperturbative effects and parton showering in the context of next-to-leading-order (NLO) event generators. We point out sizeable parton-showering corrections to jet transverse energy spectra at high rapidity, and discuss kinematic shifts in longitudinal momentum distributions from initial state showering in the case both of jet production and of heavy mass production at the Large Hadron Collider.

Nonperturbative corrections and showering in NLO-matched event generators

We study contributions from nonperturbative effects and parton showering in NLO event generators, and present applications to jet final states. We find pT-dependent and rapidity-dependent corrections which can affect the shape of observed jet distributions at the LHC. We illustrate numerically the kinematic shifts in longitudinal momentum distributions from the implementation of energy-momentum conservation in collinear shower algorithms.

A kT-dependent sea-quark density for the CASCADE Monte Carlo event generator

Parton-shower event generators that go beyond the collinear-ordering approximation at small x have so far included only gluon and valence quark channels at transverse momentum dependent level. We describe results of recent work to include effects of the sea-quark distribution with explicit dependence on the transverse quark-momentum.This sea-quark density is then applied to the description of forward Z -production. The qq*->Z matrix element (with one off-shell quark) is calculated in an explicit gauge invariant way, making use of high energy factorization. The kT-factorized result has been implemented into the CCFM Monte-Carlo CASCADE and a numerical comparison with the qg*->Zq matrix element has been carried out.

Collinearity approximations and kinematic shifts in partonic shower algorithms

We study kinematic effects due to the approximation of on-shell, collinear partons in shower Monte Carlo event generators. We observe that the collinearity approximation, combined with the requirements of energy-momentum conservation, gives rise to a kinematic shift, event by event, in longitudinal momentum distributions. We present numerical results in the case of jet and heavy flavor production processes measured at the LHC.

Forward Jets and Energy Flow in Hadronic Collisions

We observe that at the Large Hadron Collider, using forward + central detectors, it becomes possible for the first time to carry out calorimetric measurements of the transverse energy flow due to "minijets" accompanying production of two jets separated by a large rapidity interval. We present parton-shower calculations of energy flow observables in a high-energy factorized Monte Carlo framework, designed to take into account QCD logarithmic corrections both in the large rapidity interval and in the hard transverse momentum. Considering events with a forward and a central jet, we examine the energy flow in the interjet region and in the region away from the jets. We discuss the role of these observables to analyze multiple parton collision effects.

preprint2012arXiv

Forward Z-boson production and the unintegrated sea quark density

Drell-Yan production in the forward region at the Large Hadron Collider is sensitive to multiple radiation of QCD partons not collinearly ordered, emitted over large rapidity intervals. We propose a method to take account of these radiative contributions via a factorization formula which depends on the unintegrated, or transverse momentum dependent, splitting function associated with the evolution of the initial-state sea quark distribution. We analyze this formula numerically, and point out kinematic effects from the initial-state transverse momentum on the vector boson spectrum.

Transverse Energy Flow with Forward and Central Jets at the LHC

At the LHC, using forward + central detectors, it becomes possible for the first time to carry out measurements of the transverse energy flow due to ``minijets" accompanying production of two jets separated by a large rapidity interval. We discuss parton-shower calculations of energy flow observables in a high-energy factorized Monte Carlo framework, and comment on the role of these observables to study high parton multiplicity effects.

Forward-Central Jet Correlations at the Large Hadron Collider

For high-pT forward processes at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), QCD logarithmic corrections in the hard transverse momentum and in the large rapidity interval may both be quantitatively significant. The theoretical framework to resum consistently both kinds of logarithmic corrections to higher orders in perturbation theory is based on QCD high-energy factorization. We present numerical Monte Carlo applications of this method to final-state observables associated with production of one forward and one central jet. By computing jet correlations in rapidity and azimuth, we analyze the role of corrections to the parton-showering chain from large-angle gluon radiation, and discuss this in relationship with Monte Carlo results modeling interactions due to multiple parton chains.

preprint2010arXiv

Parton showering effects in central heavy-boson hadroproduction

If large-angle multigluon radiation contributes significantly to parton showers associated with heavy boson production at the LHC, appropriate parton branching methods are required for realistic Monte Carlo simulations of final states. We report on a study illustrating such effects in the case of central scalar-boson production. We comment on the possible impact of such studies on the modeling of multi-parton interactions.

Soft gluons and gauge-invariant subtractions in NLO parton-shower Monte Carlo event generators

We address the problem of decomposing graphs in perturbative QCD into terms associated with particular regions. Motivated by asking how to incorporate next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections in parton-shower algorithms, we require that: (a) The integrand for the hard part is to be integrable even if the corrections are applied to a process that is not infrared and collinear safe. (b) The splitting between the terms should be defined gauge-invariantly. (c) The dependence on cut-offs should obey homogeneous evolution equations. In the context of one-gluon-emission graphs for deep inelastic scattering, we explain a subtractive technique that is based on gauge-invariant Wilson-line operators. Appropriate organization of subtractions involving the soft region allows a connection to previous work where evolution equations with respect to the directions of the Wilson lines have been derived.

QCD Scaling Violation at Small x

We investigate the evolution of parton densities at small values of the momentum fraction, x, by including resummed anomalous dimensions in the renormalization group equations. The resummation takes into account the leading-logarithmic contributions (α_S \ln x)^k given by the BFKL equation and the next-to-leading-logarithmic corrections from quark evolution. We present numerical results for the parton densities and the deep inelastic structure function F_2.
