A simple proof of heavy tail estimates for affine type Lipschitz recursions

We study the affine recursion Xn=AnXn−1+BnX_n = A_nX_{n-1}+B_n where (An,Bn)∈R+×R(A_n,B_n)\in {\mathbb R}^+ \times {\mathbb R} is an i.i.d. sequence and recursions Xn=Φn(Xn−1)X_n = Φ_n(X_{n-1}) defined by Lipschitz transformations such that Φ(x)≥Ax+BΦ(x)\geq Ax+B. It is known that under appropriate hypotheses the stationary solution XX has regularly varying tail, i.e. lim⁡t→∞tαP[X>t]=C.\lim_{t\to\infty} t^α {\mathbb P}[X>t] = C. However positivity of CC in general is either unknown or requires some additional involved arguments. In this paper we give a simple proof that C>0C>0. This applies, in particular, to the case when Kesten-Goldie assumptions are satisfied.

Two-sided bounds for LpL_p-norms of combinations of products of independent random variables

We show that for every positive p, the L_p-norm of linear combinations (with scalar or vector coefficients) of products of i.i.d. random variables, whose moduli have a nondegenerate distribution with the p-norm one, is comparable to the l_p-norm of the coefficients and the constants are explicit. As a result the same holds for linear combinations of Riesz products. We also establish the upper and lower bounds of the L_p-moments of partial sums of perpetuities.

General inverse problems for regular variation

Regular variation of distributional tails is known to be preserved by various linear transformations of some random structures. An inverse problem for regular variation aims at understanding whether the regular variation of a transformed random object is caused by regular variation of components of the original random structure. In this paper we build up on previous work and derive results in the multivariate case and in situations where regular variation is not restricted to one particular direction or quadrant.

Large deviation estimates for exceedance times of perpetuity sequences and their dual processes

In a variety of problems in pure and applied probability, it is of relevant to study the large exceedance probabilities of the perpetuity sequence Yn:=B1+A1B2+⋯+(A1⋯An−1)BnY_n := B_1 + A_1 B_2 + \cdots + (A_1 \cdots A_{n-1}) B_n, where (Ai,Bi)⊂(0,∞)×R(A_i,B_i) \subset (0,\infty) \times {\mathbb R}. Estimates for the stationary tail distribution of {Yn}\{ Y_n \} have been developed in the seminal papers of Kesten (1973) and Goldie (1991). Specifically, it is well-known that if M:=sup⁡nYnM := \sup_n Y_n, then P{M>u}∼CMu−ξ{\mathbb P} \left\{ M > u \right\} \sim {\cal C}_M u^{-ξ} as u→∞u \to \infty. While much attention has been focused on extending this estimate, and related estimates, to more general processes, little work has been devoted to understanding the path behavior of these processes. In this paper, we derive sharp asymptotic estimates for the large exceedance times of {Yn}\{ Y_n \}. Letting Tu:=(log⁡ u)−1inf⁡{n:Yn>u}T_u := (\log\, u)^{-1} \inf\{n: Y_n > u \} denote the normalized first passage time, we study P{Tu∈G}{\mathbb P} \left\{ T_u \in G \right\} as u→∞u \to \infty for sets G⊂[0,∞)G \subset [0,\infty). We show, first, that the scaled sequence {Tu}\{ T_u \} converges in probability to a certain constant ρ>0ρ> 0. Moreover, if G∩[0,ρ]≠∅G \cap [0,ρ] \not= \emptyset, then P{Tu∈G}uI(G)→C(G){\mathbb P} \left\{ T_u \in G \right\} u^{I(G)} \to C(G) as u→∞u \to \infty for some "rate function" II and constant C(G)C(G). On the other hand, if G∩[0,ρ]=∅G \cap [0,ρ] = \emptyset, then we show that the tail behavior is actually quite complex, and different asymptotic regimes are possible. We conclude by extending our results to the corresponding forward process, understood in the sense of Letac (1986), namely, the reflected process Mn∗:=max⁡{AnMn−1∗+Bn,0}M_n^\ast := \max\{ A_n M_{n-1}^\ast + B_n, 0 \} for n∈Nn \in {\mathbb N}, where M0∗=0M_0^\ast=0.

On multidimensional Mandelbrot's cascades

Let ZZ be a random variable with values in a proper closed convex cone C⊂RdC\subset \mathbb{R}^d, AA a random endomorphism of CC and NN a random integer. We assume that ZZ, AA, NN are independent. Given NN independent copies (Ai,Zi)(A_i,Z_i) of (A,Z)(A,Z) we define a new random variable Z^=∑i=1NAiZi\hat Z = \sum_{i=1}^N A_i Z_i. Let TT be the corresponding transformation on the set of probability measures on CC i.e. TT maps the law of ZZ to the law of Z^\hat Z. If the matrix E[N]E[A]\mathbb{E}[N] \mathbb{E} [A] has dominant eigenvalue 1, we study existence and properties of fixed points of TT having finite nonzero expectation. Existing one dimensional results concerning TT are extended to higher dimensions. In particular we give conditions under which such fixed points of TT have multidimensional regular variation in the sense of extreme value theory and we determine the index of regular variation.

Precise tail index of fixed points of the two-sided smoothing transform

We consider real-valued random variables R satisfying the distributional equation R \eqdist \sum_{k=1}^{N}T_k R_k + Q, where R_1,R_2,... are iid copies of R and independent of T=(Q, (T_k)_{k \ge 1}). N is the number of nonzero weights T_k and assumed to be a.s. finite. Its properties are governed by the function m(s) := \E \sum_{k=1}^N |T_k|^s . There are at most two values α< βsuch that m(α)=m(β)=1. We consider solutions R with finite moment of order s > α. We review results about existence and uniqueness. Assuming the existence of βand an additional mild moment condition on the T_{k}, our main result asserts that \lim_{t \to \infty} t^βP(|R| > t) = K > 0, the main contribution being that K is indeed positive and therefore βthe precise tail index of |R|, for the convergence was recently shown by Jelenkovic and Olvera-Cravioto (arXiv:1012.2165).

Asymptotics of stationary solutions of multivariate stochastic recursions with heavy tailed inputs and related limit theorems

Let ΦnΦ_n be an i.i.d. sequence of Lipschitz mappings of Rd\R^d. We study the Markov chain {Xnx}n=0∞\{X_n^x\}_{n=0}^\infty on Rd\R^d defined by the recursion Xnx=Φn(Xn−1x)X_n^x = Φ_n(X^x_{n-1}), n∈Nn\in\N, X0x=x∈RdX_0^x=x\in\R^d. We assume that Φn(x)=Φ(Anx,Bn(x))Φ_n(x)=Φ(A_n x,B_n(x)) for a fixed continuous function Φ:Rd×Rd→RdΦ:\R^d\times \R^d\to\R^d, commuting with dilations and i.i.d random pairs (An,Bn)(A_n,B_n), where An∈End(Rd)A_n\in {End}(\R^d) and BnB_n is a continuous mapping of Rd\R^d. Moreover, BnB_n is αα-regularly varying and AnA_n has a faster decay at infinity than BnB_n. We prove that the stationary measure νν of the Markov chain {Xnx}\{X_n^x\} is αα-regularly varying. Using this result we show that, if α<2α<2, the partial sums Snx=∑k=1nXkxS_n^x=\sum_{k=1}^n X_k^x, appropriately normalized, converge to an αα-stable random variable. In particular, we obtain new results concerning the random coefficient autoregressive process Xn=AnXn−1+BnX_n = A_n X_{n-1}+B_n.
