On the rank of quadratic equations for curves of high degree

Let C⊂Pr\mathcal{C} \subset \mathbb{P}^r be a linearly normal curve of arithmetic genus gg and degree dd. In \cite{SD}, B. Saint-Donat proved that the homogeneous ideal I(C)I(\mathcal{C}) of C\mathcal{C} is generated by quadratic equations of rank at most 44 whenever d≥2g+2d \geq 2g+2. Also, in \cite{EKS} Eisenbud, Koh and Stillman proved that I(C)I(\mathcal{C}) admits a determinantal presentation if d≥4g+2d \geq 4g+2. In this paper, we will show that I(C)I(\mathcal{C}) can be generated by quadratic equations of rank 33 if either g=0,1g=0,1 and d≥2g+2d \geq 2g+2 or else g≥2g \geq 2 and d≥4g+4d \geq 4g+4.

On surfaces of maximal sectional regularity

We study projective surfaces X⊂PrX \subset \mathbb{P}^r (with r≥5r \geq 5) of maximal sectional regularity and degree d>rd > r, hence surfaces for which the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity $\reg(\mathcal{C})$ of a general hyperplane section curve C=X∩Pr−1\mathcal{C} = X \cap \mathbb{P}^{r-1} takes the maximally possible value d−r+3d-r+3. We use the classification of varieties of maximal sectional regularity of \cite{BLPS1} to see that these surfaces are either particular divisors on a smooth rational 33-fold scroll S(1,1,1)⊂P5S(1,1,1)\subset \mathbb{P}^5, or else admit a plane F=P2⊂Pr\mathbb{F} = \mathbb{P}^2 \subset \mathbb{P}^r such that X∩F⊂FX \cap \mathbb{F} \subset \mathbb{F} is a pure curve of degree d−r+3d-r+3. We show that our surfaces are either cones over curves of maximal regularity, or almost non-singular projections of smooth rational surface scrolls. We use this to show that the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of such a surface XX satisfies the equality $\reg(X) = d-r+3$ and we compute or estimate various of the cohomological invariants as well as the Betti numbers of such surfaces. We also study the geometry of extremal secant lines of our surfaces XX, more precisely the closure Σ(X)Σ(X) of the set of all proper extremal secant lines to XX in the Grassmannian G(1,Pr).\mathbb{G}(1, \mathbb{P}^r).

Projective varieties of maximal sectional regularity

We study projective varieties X⊂PrX \subset \mathbb{P}^r of dimension n≥2n \geq 2, of codimension c≥3c \geq 3 and of degree d≥c+3d \geq c + 3 that are of maximal sectional regularity, i.e. varieties for which the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity $\reg (\mathcal{C})$ of a general linear curve section is equal to d−c+1d -c+1, the maximal possible value (see \cite{GruLPe}). As one of the main results we classify all varieties of maximal sectional regularity. If XX is a variety of maximal sectional regularity, then either (a) it is a divisor on a rational normal (n+1)(n+1)-fold scroll Y⊂Pn+3Y \subset \mathbb{P}^{n+3} or else (b) there is an nn-dimensional linear subspace F⊂Pr\mathbb{F} \subset \mathbb{P}^r such that X∩F⊂FX \cap \mathbb{F} \subset \mathbb{F} is a hypersurface of degree d−c+1d-c+1. Moreover, suppose that n=2n = 2 or the characteristic of the ground field is zero. Then in case (b) we obtain a precise description of XX as a birational linear projection of a rational normal nn-fold scroll.

Projective surfaces of maximal sectional regularity

We study projective surfaces X⊂PrX \subset \mathbb{P}^r (with r≥5r \geq 5) of maximal sectional regularity and degree d>rd > r, hence surfaces for which the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity $\reg(C)$ of a general hyperplane section curve C=X∩Pr−1C = X \cap \mathbb{P}^{r-1} takes the maximally possible value d−r+3d-r+3. We show that each of these surfaces is either a cone over a curve C⊂Pr−1C \subset \mathbb{P}^{r-1} of maximal regularity or else a birational outer linear projection of a smooth rational surface scroll X~⊂Pd+1\widetilde{X} \subset \mathbb{P}^{d+1}. We prove that the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of these surfaces satisfies the equality $\reg(X) = d-r+3$ and we compute or estimate various of their cohomological invariants as well as their Betti numbers. We study the the extremal variety F(X)\mathbb{F}(X) of these surfaces XX, that is the closed union of the extremal secant lines of all smooth hyperplane section curves of XX. We show that F(X)\mathbb{F}(X) is either a plane or that otherwise r=5r =5 and F(X)\mathbb{F}(X) is a rational smooth threefold scroll S(1,1,1)⊂P5S(1,1,1) \subset \mathbb{P}^5.

On hypersurfaces containing projective varieties

Classical Castelnuovo's Lemma shows that the number of linearly independent quadratic equations of a nondegenerate irreducible projective variety of codimension cc is at most (c+12){{c+1} \choose {2}} and the equality is attained if and only if the variety is of minimal degree. Also a generalization of Castelnuovo's Lemma by G. Fano implies that the next case occurs if and only if the variety is a del Pezzo variety. For curve case, these results are extended to equations of arbitrary degree respectively by J. Harris and S. L'vovsky. This paper is intended to extend these results to arbitrary dimensional varieties and to the next cases.
