Search for the high-spin members of the αα:2n:αα band in 10^{10}Be

Method: Measuring excitation functions for 6^{6}He+αα scattering, populating states in the excitation energy range from 4.5 MeV to 8 MeV in 10^{10}Be using a 6^6He rare-isotope beam and a thick helium gas target. Results: No new excited states in 10^{10}Be have been observed. Stringent limitation on the possible degree of αα-clustering of the hypothetical yrast 6+^+ state has been obtained. Conclusions: The high-spin members of the αα:2n:αα molecular-like rotational band configuration, that is considered to have a 0+^+ bandhead at 6.18 MeV, either do not exist or have small overlap with the 6^{6}He(g.s.)+αα channel.

Coulomb dissociation of 20,21^{20,21}N

Neutron-rich light nuclei and their reactions play an important role for the creation of chemical elements. Here, data from a Coulomb dissociation experiment on 20,21^{20,21}N are reported. Relativistic 20,21^{20,21}N ions impinged on a lead target and the Coulomb dissociation cross section was determined in a kinematically complete experiment. Using the detailed balance theorem, the 19N(n,γ)20N^{19}\mathrm{N}(\mathrm{n},γ)^{20}\mathrm{N} and 20N(n,γ)21N^{20}\mathrm{N}(\mathrm{n},γ)^{21}\mathrm{N} excitation functions and thermonuclear reaction rates have been determined. The 19N(n,γ)20N^{19}\mathrm{N}(\mathrm{n},γ)^{20}\mathrm{N} rate is up to a factor of 5 higher at T<1T<1\,GK with respect to previous theoretical calculations, leading to a 10\,\% decrease in the predicted fluorine abundance.

Proton Capture on ^{17}O and its astrophysical implications

The reaction 17^{17}O(p,γ)18(p,γ)^{18}F influences hydrogen-burning nucleosynthesis in several stellar sites, such as red giants, asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, massive stars and classical novae. In the relevant temperature range for these environments (T9=0.01−0.4),themaincontributionstotherateofthisreactionarethedirectcaptureprocess,twolowlyingnarrowresonances(T_{9}=0.01-0.4), the main contributions to the rate of this reaction are the direct capture process, two low lying narrow resonances (E_{r}=65.1and183keV)andthelow−energytailsoftwobroadresonances( and 183 keV) and the low-energy tails of two broad resonances (E_{r}=557and677keV).Previousmeasurementsandcalculationsgivecontradictoryresultsforthedirectcapturecontributionwhichinturnincreasestheuncertaintyofthereactionrate.Inaddition,veryfewpublishedcrosssectiondataexistforthehighenergyregionthatmightaffecttheinterpretationofthedirectcaptureandthecontributionsofthebroadresonancesinthelowerenergyrange.Thisworkaimstoaddresstheseissues.Thereactioncrosssectionwasmeasuredinawideprotonenergyrange( and 677 keV). Previous measurements and calculations give contradictory results for the direct capture contribution which in turn increases the uncertainty of the reaction rate. In addition, very few published cross section data exist for the high energy region that might affect the interpretation of the direct capture and the contributions of the broad resonances in the lower energy range. This work aims to address these issues. The reaction cross section was measured in a wide proton energy range (E_{c.m.}=345−1700keV)andatseveralangles( - 1700 keV) and at several angles (θ_{lab}=0^{\circ},45^{\circ},90^{\circ},135^{\circ}).Theobservedprimary). The extrapolated S-factor from the present data is in good agreement with the existing literature data in the low-energy region. A new reaction rate was calculated from the combined results of this work and literature S-factor determinations. Resonance strengths and branchings are reported for several ^{18}Fstates.WewereabletoextrapolatetheastrophysicalS−factorofthereactionF states. We were able to extrapolate the astrophysical S-factor of the reaction ^{17}OO(p,γ)^{18}$F at low energies from cross section data taken at higher energies. No significant changes in the nucleosynthesis are expected from the newly calculated reaction rate.
