Multiscale Turbulence Synthesis: Validation in 2D Hydrodynamics

Numerical simulations can follow the evolution of fluid motions through the intricacies of developed turbulence. However, they are rather costly to run, especially in 3D. In the past two decades, generative models have emerged which produce synthetic random flows at a computational cost equivalent to no more than a few time-steps of a simulation. These simplified models qualitatively bear some characteristics of turbulent flows in specific contexts (incompressible 3D hydrodynamics or magnetohydrodynamics), but generally struggle with the synthesis of coherent structures. We aim at generating random fields (e.g. velocity, density, magnetic fields, etc.) with realistic physical properties for a large variety of governing partial differential equations and at a small cost relative to time-resolved simulations. We propose a set of approximations applied to given sets of partial differential equations, and test the validity of our method in the simplest framework: 2D decaying incompressible hydrodynamical turbulence. We compare results of 2D decaying simulations with snapshots of our synthetic turbulence. We assess quantitatively the difference first with standard statistical tools: power spectra, increments and structure functions. These indicators can be reproduced by our method during up to about a third of the turnover time scale. We also consider recently developed scattering transforms statistics, able to efficiently characterise non-Gaussian structures. This reveals more significant discrepancy, which can however be bridged by bootstrapping. Finally, the number of Fourier transforms necessary for one synthesis scales logarithmically in the resolution, compared to linearly for time-resolved simulations. We have designed a multiscale turbulence synthesis (MuScaTS) method to efficiently short-circuit costly numerical simulations to produce realistic instantaneous fields.

Wavelet Moments for Cosmological Parameter Estimation

Extracting non-Gaussian information from the non-linear regime of structure formation is key to fully exploiting the rich data from upcoming cosmological surveys probing the large-scale structure of the universe. However, due to theoretical and computational complexities, this remains one of the main challenges in analyzing observational data. We present a set of summary statistics for cosmological matter fields based on 3D wavelets to tackle this challenge. These statistics are computed as the spatial average of the complex modulus of the 3D wavelet transform raised to a power $q$ and are therefore known as invariant wavelet moments. The 3D wavelets are constructed to be radially band-limited and separable on a spherical polar grid and come in three types: isotropic, oriented, and harmonic. In the Fisher forecast framework, we evaluate the performance of these summary statistics on matter fields from the Quijote suite, where they are shown to reach state-of-the-art parameter constraints on the base $Λ$CDM parameters, as well as the sum of neutrino masses. We show that we can improve constraints by a factor 5 to 10 in all parameters with respect to the power spectrum baseline.

Bosonic condensates in realistic supersymmetric GUT cosmic strings

We study the realistic structure of F-term Nambu-Goto cosmic strings forming in a general supersymmetric Grand Unified Theory implementation, assuming standard hybrid inflation. Examining the symmetry breaking of the unification gauge group down to the Standard Model, we discuss the minimal field content necessary to describe abelian cosmic strings appearing at the end of inflation. We find that several fields will condense in most theories, questioning the plausible occurrence of associated currents (bosonic and fermionic). We perturbatively evaluate the modification of their energy per unit length due to the condensates. We provide a criterion for comparing the usual abelian Higgs approximation used in cosmology to realistic situations.

Bosonic structure of realistic SO(10) SUSY cosmic strings

We study the bosonic structure of $F$-term Nambu-Goto cosmic strings forming in a realistic SO(10) implementation, assuming standard hybrid inflation. We describe the supersymmetric grand unified theory, and its spontaneous symmetry breaking scheme in parallel with the inflationary process. We also write the explicit tensor formulation of its scalar sector, focusing on the sub-representations singlet under the standard model, which is sufficient to describe the string structure. We then introduce an ansatz for abelian cosmic strings, discussing in details the hypothesis, and write down the field equations and boundary conditions. Finally, after doing a perturbative study of the model, we present and discuss the results obtained with numerical solutions of the string structure.

Generalized Proca action for an Abelian vector field

We revisit the most general theory for a massive vector field with derivative self-interactions, extending previous works on the subject to account for terms having trivial total derivative interactions for the longitudinal mode. In the flat spacetime (Minkowski) case, we obtain all the possible terms containing products of up to five first-order derivatives of the vector field, and provide a conjecture about higher-order terms. Rendering the metric dynamical, we covariantize the results and add all possible terms implying curvature.

Generalized SU(2) Proca Theory

Following previous works on generalized Abelian Proca theory, also called vector Galileon, we investigate the massive extension of an SU(2) gauge theory, i.e., the generalized SU(2) Proca model, which could be dubbed non-Abelian vector Galileon. This particular symmetry group permits fruitful applications in cosmology such as inflation driven by gauge fields. Our approach consists in building, in an exhaustive way, all the Lagrangians containing up to six contracted Lorentz indices. For this purpose, and after identifying by group theoretical considerations all the independent Lagrangians which can be written at these orders, we consider the only linear combinations propagating three degrees of freedom and having healthy dynamics for their longitudinal mode, i.e., whose pure Stückelberg contribution turns into the SU(2) multi-Galileon dynamics. Finally, and after having considered the curved space-time expansion of these Lagrangians, we discuss the form of the theory at all subsequent orders.

On the 4D generalized Proca action for an Abelian vector field

We summarize previous results on the most general Proca theory in 4 dimensions containing only first-order derivatives in the vector field (second-order at most in the associated Stückelberg scalar) and having only three propagating degrees of freedom with dynamics controlled by second-order equations of motion. Discussing the Hessian condition used in previous works, we conjecture that, as in the scalar galileon case, the most complete action contains only a finite number of terms with second-order derivatives of the Stückelberg field describing the longitudinal mode, which is in agreement with the results of JCAP 1405, 015 (2014) and Phys. Lett. B 757, 405 (2016) and complements those of JCAP 1602, 004 (2016). We also correct and complete the parity violating sector, obtaining an extra term on top of the arbitrary function of the field $A_μ$, the Faraday tensor $F_{μν}$ and its Hodge dual $\tilde{F}_{μν}$.
