Discretization Errors for the Gluon and Ghost Propagators in Landau Gauge using NSPT

The subtraction of hypercubic lattice corrections, calculated at 1-loop order in lattice perturbation theory (LPT), is common practice, e.g., for determinations of renormalization constants in lattice hadron physics. Providing such corrections beyond 1-loop order is however very demanding in LPT, and numerical stochastic perturbation theory (NSPT) might be the better candidate for this. Here we report on a first feasibility check of this method and provide (in a parametrization valid for arbitrary lattice couplings) the lattice corrections up to 3-loop order for the SU(3) gluon and ghost propagators in Landau gauge. These propagators are ideal candidates for such a check, as they are available from lattice simulations to high precision and can be combined to a renormalization group invariant product (Minimal MOM coupling) for which a 1-loop LPT correction was found to be insufficient to remove the bulk of the hypercubic lattice artifacts from the data. As a bonus, we also compare our results with the ever popular H(4) method.

Towards thermodynamics with $N_f=2+1+1$ twisted mass quarks

We present preliminary results achieved within a recently started project dealing with QCD thermodynamics in the presence of a fully dynamical second quark family. We are employing the Wilson twisted mass discretization. To reduce the amount of zero temperature simulations and the cost of analysis we have chosen the fixed-scale approach. We show a variety of basic thermodynamic observables for temperatures ranging from 158 to 633 MeV. Simulations were performed for three lattice spacings below 0.1 fm each and at a single value of the pion mass which allows a comparison with previously obtained $N_f=2$ results. We determine the chiral crossover temperature from the bare chiral susceptibility and show results for the gauge part of the trace anomaly.

Confining dyon gas with finite-volume effects under control

As an approach to describe the long-range properties of non-Abelian gauge theories at non-zero temperature T < T_c, we consider a non-interacting ensemble of dyons (magnetic monopoles) with non-trivial holonomy. We show analytically, that the quark-antiquark free energy from the Polyakov loop correlator grows linearly with the distance, and how the string tension scales with the dyon density. In numerical treatments, the long-range tails of the dyon fields cause severe finite-volume effects. Therefore, we demonstrate the application of Ewald's summation method to this system. Finite-volume effects are shown to be under control, which is a crucial requirement for numerical studies of interacting dyon ensembles.

Pseudo-Critical Temperature and Thermal Equation of State from $N_f=2$ Twisted Mass Lattice QCD

We report about the current status of our ongoing study of the chiral limit of two-flavor QCD at finite temperature with twisted mass quarks. We estimate the pseudo-critical temperature $T_c$ for three values of the pion mass in the range of $m_\mathrm{PS} \simeq 300$ and $500 \mathrm{MeV}$ and discuss different chiral scenarios. Furthermore, we present first preliminary results for the trace anomaly, pressure and energy density. We have studied several discretizations of Euclidean time up to $N_τ=12$ in order to assess the continuum limit of the trace anomaly. From its interpolation we evaluate the pressure and energy density employing the integral method. Here, we have focussed on two pion masses with $m_\mathrm{PS} \simeq 400$ and $700 \mathrm{MeV}$.

Topological aspects of G2 Yang-Mills theory

Yang-Mills theory and QCD are well-defined for any Lie group as gauge group. The choice G2 is of great interest, as it is the smallest group with trivial center and being at the same time accessible to simulations. This theory has been found to have many properties in common with SU(3) Yang-Mills theory and QCD, permitting to study the role of the center. Herein, these investigations are extended to topological properties of G2 Yang-Mills theory. After giving the instanton construction for G2, topological lumps with instanton topological charge are identified in cooled lattice configurations. The corresponding topological susceptibility is determined in the vacuum and at low and high temperatures, showing a significant response to the phase structure of the theory.

SU(3) Landau gauge gluon and ghost propagators using the logarithmic lattice gluon field definition

We study the Landau gauge gluon and ghost propagators of SU(3) gauge theory, employing the logarithmic definition for the lattice gluon fields and implementing the corresponding form of the Faddeev-Popov matrix. This is necessary in order to consistently compare lattice data for the bare propagators with that of higher-loop numerical stochastic perturbation theory (NSPT). In this paper we provide such a comparison, and introduce what is needed for an efficient lattice study. When comparing our data for the logarithmic definition to that of the standard lattice Landau gauge we clearly see the propagators to be multiplicatively related. The data of the associated ghost-gluon coupling matches up almost completely. For the explored lattice spacings and sizes discretization artifacts, finite-size and Gribov-copy effects are small. At weak coupling and large momentum, the bare propagators and the ghost-gluon coupling are seen to be approached by those of higher-order NSPT.

Confinement from semiclassical gluon fields in SU(2) gauge theory

The infrared structure of SU(2) Yang-Mills theory is studied by means of lattice gauge simulations using a new constrained cooling technique. This method reduces the action while all Polyakov lines on the lattice remain unchanged. In contrast to unconstrained cooling, quark confinement is still intact. A study of the Hessian of the Yang-Mills action shows that low action (semi-) classical configurations can be achieved, with a characteristic splitting between collective modes and higher momentum modes. Besides confinement, the semiclassical configurations also support the topological susceptibility and generate spontaneous breakdown of chiral symmetry. We show that they possess a cluster structure of locally mainly (anti-) selfdual objects. By contrast to an instanton or a meron medium, the topological charge of individual clusters is smoothly distributed.

Momentum dependence of the topological susceptibility with overlap fermions

Knowledge of the derivative of the topological susceptibility at zero momentum is important for assessing the validity of the Witten-Veneziano formula for the eta' mass, and likewise for the resolution of the EMC proton spin problem. We investigate the momentum dependence of the topological susceptibility and its derivative at zero momentum using overlap fermions in quenched lattice QCD simulations. We expose the role of the low-lying Dirac eigenmodes for the topological charge density, and find a negative value for the derivative. While the sign of the derivative is consistent with the QCD sum rule for pure Yang-Mills theory, the absolute value is overestimated if the contribution from higher eigenmodes is ignored.

Vortex content of calorons and deconfinement mechanism

We reveal the center vortex content of SU(2) calorons and ensembles of them. While one part of the vortex connects the constituent dyons of a single caloron, another part is predominantly spatial and can be related to the twist that exists in the caloron gauge field. The latter part depends strongly on the caloron holonomy and degenerates to a plane between the dyons when the asymptotic Polyakov loop is traceless. Correspondingly, the spatial vortex in caloron ensembles is percolating in this case. This finding fits perfectly in the confinement scenario of vortices and shows that calorons are suitable to facilitate the vortex (de)confinement mechanism.

Yang-Mills streamlines and semi-classical confinement

Semi-classical configurations in Yang-Mills theory have been derived from lattice Monte Carlo configurations using a recently proposed constrained cooling technique which is designed to preserve every Polyakov line (at any point in space-time in any direction). Consequently, confinement was found sustained by the ensemble of semi-classical configurations. The existence of gluonic and fermionic near-to-zero modes was demonstrated as a precondition for a possible semi-classical expansion around the cooled configurations as well as providing the gapless spectrum of the Dirac operator necessary for chiral symmetry breaking. The cluster structure of topological charge of the semi-classical streamline configurations was analysed and shown to support the axial anomaly of the right size, although the structure differs from the instanton gas or liquid. Here, we present further details on the space-time structure and the time evolution of the streamline configurations.

The Vortex Structure of SU(2) Calorons

We reveal the center vortex content of SU(2) calorons and ensembles of them. We use Laplacian Center Gauge as well as Maximal Center Gauges to show that the vortex in a single caloron consists of two parts. The first one connects the constituent dyons of the caloron (which are monopoles in Laplacian Abelian Gauge) and extends in time. The second part is predominantly spatial, encloses one of the dyons and can be related to the twist in the caloron gauge field. This part depends strongly on the caloron holonomy and degenerates to a plane when the holonomy is maximally nontrivial, i.e. when the asymptotic Polyakov loop is traceless. Correspondingly, we find the spatial vortices in caloron ensembles to percolate in this case. This finding fits perfectly in the confinement scenario of vortices and shows that calorons are suitable to facilitate the vortex confinement mechanism.

Vortex Content of SU(2) Calorons and Multi-Calorons

We use Laplacian Center Gauge to reveal the vortex content of single SU(2) calorons and multi-caloron systems at different holonomies. The vortex surfaces in a single SU(2) caloron consist of two parts that are induced by the constituent dyon charges and by the twist between the dyons, respectively. The latter part percolates in a caloron ensemble at maximal nontrivial holonomy. This finding fits perfectly in the confinement scenario of vortices and shows that calorons are suitable to facilitate the vortex confinement mechanism.
