Shadows cast by a class of rotating black bounces with an anisotropic fluid

In this work, we introduce a family of rotating black bounces with an anisotropic fluid obtained by using a modified Newman-Janis algorithm. We analyze the main features of these spacetimes and obtain the geodesics for photons, which admit the separation of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. We then determine the shape of the shadow in terms of the parameters of the model. We present some relevant examples that exhibit some traits that distinguish these spacetimes from other related ones appearing in the literature.

Black hole solutions and thin shells in N-dimensional F(R) gravity with a conformally invariant Maxwell field

We present a generalization of the black hole solution with spherical symmetry already known in the literature for $N$-dimensional $F(R)$ gravity with a conformally invariant Maxwell field and constant scalar curvature $R$. This solution also includes a generalization of the one corresponding to general relativity as a special case. We introduce the formalism for the construction of a broad family of spherically symmetric thin shells in $F(R)$ theory. We use our generalized solution in order to provide examples of bubbles and thin layers of matter surrounding black holes. We analyze the stability of the constructions under perturbations preserving the symmetry, finding that stable configurations are possible for suitable values of the parameters. We show that the extension to higher dimensions does not alter the qualitative behavior of the thin shells found in four dimensions, with the main difference being a change of scale for the different values of $N$.

Thin shells in (2+1)-dimensional F(R) gravity

We study thin shells of matter in (2+1)-dimensional F(R) theories of gravity with constant scalar curvature R. We consider a wide class of spacetimes with circular symmetry, in which a thin shell joins an inner region with an outer one. We analyze the stability of the static configurations under radial perturbations. As examples of spacetimes asymptotically anti-de Sitter, we present a charged bubble and a charged thin shell surrounding a non-charged black hole. In both cases, we show that stable solutions can be found for suitable values of the parameters.

Influence of an anisotropic matter field on the shadow of a rotating black hole

In this paper, we study the shadow produced by rotating black holes with charge in the presence of an anisotropic matter field. We obtain the apparent shape and the corresponding observables characterizing the size, oblateness, and deviation of the center, for different values of the parameters of the model. We compare the new results with those corresponding to the Kerr-Newmann spacetime and we also discuss the observational prospects in this case.

Thin shells surrounding black holes in F(R) gravity

In this article, we consider spherical thin shells of matter surrounding black holes in F(R) theories of gravity. We study the stability of the static configurations under perturbations that conserve the symmetry. In particular, we analyze the case of charged shells outside the horizon of non--charged black holes. We obtain that stable static thin shells are possible if the values of the parameters of the model are properly selected.

Spherical thin shells in F(R) gravity: construction and stability

We present a broad class of spherical thin shells of matter in F(R) gravity. We show that the corresponding junction conditions determine the equation of state between the energy density and the pressure/tension at the surface. We analyze the stability of the static configurations under perturbations preserving the symmetry. We apply the formalism to the construction of charged bubbles and we find that there exist stable static configurations for a suitable set of the parameters of the model.

Pure double-layer bubbles in quadratic F(R) gravity

We present a class of spherically symmetric spacetimes corresponding to bubbles separating two regions with constant values of the scalar curvature, or equivalently with two different cosmological constants, in quadratic F(R) theory. The bubbles are obtained by means of the junction formalism, and the matching hypersurface supports in general a thin shell and a gravitational double layer. In particular, we find that pure double layers are possible for appropriate values of the parameters of the model whenever the quadratic coefficient is negative. This is the first example of a pure double layer in a gravitational theory.

Brans-Dicke cylindrical wormholes

Static axisymmetric thin-shell wormholes are constructed within the framework of the Brans-Dicke scalar-tensor theory of gravity. Examples of wormholes associated with vacuum and electromagnetic fields are studied. All constructions must be threaded by exotic matter, except in the case of geometries with a singularity of finite radius, associated with an electric field, which can have a throat supported by ordinary matter. These results are achieved with any of the two definitions of the flare-out condition considered.

Thin shells joining local cosmic string geometries

In this article we present a theoretical construction of spacetimes with a thin shell that joins two different local cosmic string geometries. We study two types of global manifolds, one representing spacetimes with a thin shell surrounding a cosmic string or an empty region with Minkowski metric, and the other corresponding to wormholes which are not symmetric across the throat located at the shell. We analyze the stability of the static configurations under perturbations preserving the cylindrical symmetry. For both types of geometries we find that the static configurations can be stable for suitable values of the parameters.

Thin-shell wormholes with a double layer in quadratic F(R) gravity

We present a family of spherically symmetric Lorentzian wormholes in quadratic F(R) gravity, with a thin shell of matter corresponding to the throat. At each side of the shell the geometry has a different constant value of the curvature scalar R. The junction conditions determine the equation of state between the pressure and energy density at the throat, where a double layer is also located. We analyze the stability of the configurations under perturbations preserving the spherical symmetry. In particular, we study thin-shell wormholes with mass and charge. We find that there exist values of the parameters for which stable static solutions are possible.

Thin-shell wormholes with charge in F(R) gravity

In this article, we construct a class of constant curvature and spherically symmetric thin-shell Lorentzian wormholes in F(R) theories of gravity and we analyze their stability under perturbations preserving the symmetry. We find that the junction conditions determine the equation of state of the matter at the throat. As a particular case, we consider configurations with mass and charge. We obtain that stable static solutions are possible for suitable values of the parameters of the model.

Asymptotically anti-de Sitter cylindrical thin-shell wormholes

In this article we investigate cylindrical thin-shell wormholes which are asymptotically anti-de Sitter. We analyze their stability under perturbations preserving the symmetry by using two different methods. We compare the results with those corresponding to the wormholes constructed from the Levi-Civita spacetime. We find that the configurations always require the presence of exotic matter at the throat, and, in the case of the linearized stability analysis, they can be stable for suitable values of the parameters

Regular phantom black holes as gravitational lenses

The distortion of the spacetime structure in the surroundings of black holes affects the trajectories of light rays. As a consequence, black holes can act as gravitational lenses. Observations of type Ia supernovas, show that our Universe is in accelerated expansion. The usual explanation is that the Universe is filled with a negative pressure fluid called dark energy, which accounts for 70 % of its total density, which can be modeled by a self-interacting scalar field with a potential. We consider a class of spherically symmetric regular phantom black holes as gravitational lenses. We study large deflection angles, using the strong deflection limit, corresponding to an asymptotic logarithmic approximation. In this case, photons passing close to the photon sphere of the black hole experiment several loops around it before they emerge towards the observer, giving place to two infinite sets of relativistic images. Within this limit, we find analytical expressions for the positions and the magnifications of these images. We discuss the results obtained and make a comparison with the Schwarzschild and Brans-Dicke solutions for the case of the galactic center supermassive black hole.

Shadow cast by a Kaluza-Klein spinning dilaton black hole

We examine the shadow of a rotating Kaluza-Klein black hole in Einstein gravity coupled to a Maxwell field and a dilaton. The size and the shape of the shadow depend on the mass, the charge, and the angular momentum of the compact object. For a given mass, the size increases with the rotation parameter and decreases with the electric charge. The distortion with respect to the non rotating case grows with the charge and the rotation parameter. For fixed values of these parameters, the shadow is slightly larger and less deformed than in the Kerr-Newman case.

General formalism for the stability of thin-shell wormholes in 2+1 dimensions

In this article we theoretically construct circular thin-shell wormholes in a 2+1 dimensional spacetime. The construction is symmetric with respect to the throat. We present a general formalism for the study of the mechanical stability under perturbations preserving the circular symmetry of the configurations, adopting a linearized equation of state for the exotic matter at the throat. We apply the formalism to several examples.

Some general aspects of thin-shell wormholes with cylindrical symmetry

In this article we study a general class of non-rotating thin-shell wormholes with cylindrical symmetry. We consider two physically sound definitions of the flare-out condition and we show that the less restrictive one allows for the construction of wormholes with positive energy density at the throat. We also analyze the mechanical stability of these objects under perturbations preserving the symmetry, proving that previous results are particular cases of a general property. We present examples of wormholes corresponding to Einstein-Maxwell spacetimes.

Strong deflection lensing by charged black holes in scalar-tensor gravity

We examine a class of charged black holes in scalar-tensor gravity as gravitational lenses. We find the deflection angle in the strong deflection limit, from which we obtain the positions and the magnifications of the relativistic images. We compare our results with those corresponding to the Reissner-Norstrom spacetime and we analyze the observational aspects in the case of the Galactic supermassive black hole.

Aspects of spherical shells in a D-dimensional background

In this work, shells are mathematically constructed by applying the cut and paste procedure to D-dimensional spherically symmetric geometries. The weak energy condition for the matter on the shells is briefly analyzed. The dynamical evolution is studied, and the general formalism for the stability of static solutions is presented. Several examples corresponding to different spacetime dimensions and values of the parameters are considered.

Gravitational lensing by massless braneworld black holes

In this paper, we study massless braneworld black holes as gravitational lenses. We find the weak and the strong deflection limits for the deflection angle, from which we calculate the positions and magnifications of the images. We compare the results obtained here with those corresponding to Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordstrom spacetimes, and also with those found in previous works for some other braneworld black holes.

preprint2012arXiv

Shadow of a rotating braneworld black hole

We investigate the shadow cast by a rotating braneworld black hole, in the Randall-Sundrum scenario. In addition to the angular momentum, the tidal charge term deforms the shape of the shadow. For a given value of the rotation parameter, the presence of a negative tidal charge enlarges the shadow and reduces its deformation with respect to Kerr spacetime, while for a positive charge, the opposite effect is obtained. We also analyze the case in which the combination of the rotation parameter and the tidal charge results in a naked singularity. We discuss the observational prospects corresponding to the supermassive black hole at the Galactic center.

preprint2012arXiv

Strong deflection gravitational lensing

In this work are reviewed several aspects of gravitational lensing produced by astrophysical bodies that strongly curve the spacetime in their vicinity. When an object with a photon sphere (e.g. a black hole) is interposed between a source and an observer, in addition to primary and secondary images due to small deflections of the light rays, there are two infinite sets of images called relativistic, produced by light passing close to the photon sphere, which undergoes a large deflection. The positions and magnifications of relativistic images can be obtained numerically or analytically, in the latter case by an approximate method called strong deflection limit. This method is applied to the study of lensing by non-rotating black holes and also by rotating ones. For the latter, is also of interest to study the deformation of the shadow cast by the black hole, which depends on the rotation parameter.

Thin-shell wormholes with a generalized Chaplygin gas in Einstein-Born-Infeld theory

We construct spherically symmetric thin-shell wormholes supported by a generalized Chaplygin gas in Born-Infeld electrodynamics coupled to Einstein gravity, and we analyze their stability under radial perturbations. For different values of the Born-Infeld parameter and the charge, we compare the results with those obtained in a previous work for Maxwell electrodynamics. The stability region in the parameter space reduces and then disappears as the value of the Born-Infeld parameter is modified in the sense of a larger departure from Maxwell theory.

preprint2011arXiv

Dilaton thin-shell wormholes supported by a generalized Chaplygin gas

In this article, we construct spherical thin-shell wormholes with charge in dilaton gravity. The exotic matter required for the construction is provided by a generalized Chaplygin gas. We study the stability under perturbations preserving the symmetry. We find that the increase of the coupling between the dilaton and the electromagnetic fields reduces the range of the parameters for which stable configurations are possible.

Null geodesics and shadow of a rotating black hole in extended Chern-Simons modified gravity

The Chern-Simons modification to general relativity in four dimensions consists of adding to the Einstein-Hilbert term a scalar field that couples to the first class Pontryagin density. In this theory, which has attracted considerable attention recently, the Schwarzschild metric persists as an exact solution, and this is why this model resists several observational constraints. In contrast, the spinning black hole solution of the theory is not given by the Kerr metric but by a modification of it, so far only known for slow rotation and small coupling constant. In the present paper, we show that, in this approximation, the null geodesic equation can be integrated, and this allows us to investigate the shadow cast by a black hole. We discuss how, in addition to the angular momentum of the solution, the coupling to the Chern-Simons term deforms the shape of the shadow.

preprint2008arXiv

Stability of thin-shell wormholes with spherical symmetry

In this article, the stability of a general class of spherically symmetric thin-shell wormholes is studied under perturbations preserving the symmetry. For this purpose, the equation of state at the throat is linearized around the static solutions. The formalism presented here is applied to dilaton wormholes and it is found that there is a smaller range of possible stable configurations for them than in the case of Reissner-Nordstrom wormholes with the same charge.

preprint2005arXiv

Braneworld black holes as gravitational lenses

Black holes acting as gravitational lenses produce, besides the primary and secondary weak field images, two infinite sets of relativistic images. These images can be studied using the strong field limit, an analytic method based on a logarithmic asymptotic approximation of the deflection angle. In this work, braneworld black holes are analyzed as gravitational lenses in the strong field limit and the feasibility of observation of the images is discussed.

Gravitational microlensing of gamma-ray blazars

We present a detailed study of the effects of gravitational microlensing on compact and distant $γ$-ray blazars. These objects have $γ$-ray emitting regions which are small enough as to be affected by microlensing effects produced by stars lying in intermediate galaxies. We analyze the temporal evolution of the gamma-ray magnification for sources moving in a caustic pattern field, where the combined effects of thousands of stars are taken into account using a numerical technique. We propose that some of the unidentified $γ$-ray sources (particularly some of those lying at high galactic latitude whose gamma-ray statistical properties are very similar to detected $γ$-ray blazars) are indeed the result of gravitational lensing magnification of background undetected Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs).
