Optimality of doubly reflected Levy processes in singular control

We consider a class of two-sided singular control problems. A controller either increases or decreases a given spectrally negative Levy process so as to minimize the total costs comprising of the running and control costs where the latter is proportional to the size of control. We provide a sufficient condition for the optimality of a double barrier strategy, and in particular show that it holds when the running cost function is convex. Using the fluctuation theory of doubly reflected Levy processes, we express concisely the optimal strategy as well as the value function using the scale function. Numerical examples are provided to confirm the analytical results.

A direct method for solving optimal stopping problems for Lévy processes

We propose an alternative approach for solving a number of well-studied optimal stopping problems for Lévy processes. Instead of the usual method of guess-and-verify based on martingale properties of the value function, we suggest a more direct method by showing that the general theory of optimal stopping for strong Markov processes together with some elementary observations imply that the stopping set must be of a certain form for the optimal stopping problems we consider. The independence of increments and the strong Markov property of Lévy processes then allow us to use straightforward optimisation over a real-valued parameter to determine this stopping set. We illustrate this approach by applying it to the McKean optimal stopping problem (American put), the Novikov--Shiryaev optimal stopping problem and the Shepp--Shiryaev optimal stopping problem (Russian option).

Further calculations for the McKean stochastic game for a spectrally negative Levy process: from a point to an interval

Following Baurdoux and Kyprianou [2] we consider the McKean stochastic game, a game version of the McKean optimal stopping problem (American put), driven by a spectrally negative Levy process. We improve their characterisation of a saddle point for this game when the driving process has a Gaussian component and negative jumps. In particular we show that the exercise region of the minimiser consists of a singleton when the penalty parameter is larger than some threshold and 'thickens' to a full interval when the penalty parameter drops below this threshold. Expressions in terms of scale functions for the general case and in terms of polynomials for a specific jump-diffusion case are provided.
