QCD Jet Rates with the Inclusive Generalized kt Algorithms

We derive generating functions, valid to next-to-double logarithmic accuracy, for QCD jet rates according to the inclusive forms of the kt, Cambridge/Aachen and anti-kt algorithms, which are equivalent at this level of accuracy. We compare the analytical results with jet rates and average jet multiplicities from the SHERPA event generator, and study the transition between Poisson-like and staircase-like behaviour of jet ratios.

Jet properties at high-multiplicity

We investigate the behaviour of jets at high-multiplicity using analytic techniques. We consider in detail the rates, areas and the intermediate splitting scales as a function of the number of jets. In each case, we are able to characterise a general scaling behaviour characteristic for QCD processes, which we compare with results from the parton shower. The study of these observables potentially offers a very general handle in the difficult to describe regime of high-jet multiplicity.

Recursive prescription for logarithmic jet rate coefficients

We derive a recursion relation for the analytic leading logarithmic coefficients of a final state gluon cascade. We demonstrate the potential of our method by analytically computing the rate coefficients for the emission of up to 80 gluons in both the exclusive-kT (Durham) and generalized inclusive-kT class of jet algorithms. There is a particularly simple form for the ratios of resolved coefficients. We suggest potential applications including the efficient generation of shower histories.

From Jet Counting to Jet Vetoes

The properties of multi-jet events impact many LHC analysis. The exclusive number of jets at hadron colliders can be described in terms of two simple patterns: staircase scaling and Poisson scaling. In photon plus jets production we can interpolate between the two patterns using simple kinematic cuts. The associated theoretical errors are well under control. Understanding such exclusive jet multiplicities significantly impacts Higgs searches and searches for supersymmetry at the LHC.

Asymptotic safety and Kaluza-Klein gravitons at the LHC

We study Drell-Yan production at the LHC in low-scale quantum gravity models with extra dimensions. Asymptotic safety implies that the ultra-violet behavior of gravity is dictated by a fixed point. We show how the energy dependence of Newton's coupling regularizes the gravitational amplitude using a renormalization group improvement. We study LHC predictions and find that Kaluza-Klein graviton signals are well above Standard Model backgrounds. This leaves a significant sensitivity to the energy scale Lambda_T where the gravitational couplings cross over from classical to fixed point scaling.

Asymptotically Safe Gravitons in Electroweak Precision Physics

Asymptotic safety offers a field theory based UV completion to gravity. For low Planck scales, gravitational effects on low-energy precision observables cannot be neglected. We compute the contribution to the rho parameter from asymptotically safe gravitons and find that in contrast to effective theory, constraints on models with more than three extra dimensions are significantly weakened. The relative size of the trans-Planckian contribution increases proportional to the number of extra dimensions.

W+jets, Z+jets, multijets and new physics searches

W+jets, Z+jets and QCD multijet production processes at hadron colliders are backgrounds to many searches for physics beyond the Standard Model which involve leptons and missing energy in the final state. We review the current theoretical and experimental status of these processes at the LHC. Furthermore, we discuss several methods that allow for reliable predictions for these processes in the context of new-physics searches.

Extra Dimensions and their Ultraviolet Completion

Large extra dimensions are one of the constructions addressing the hierarchy problem of the Standard Model. Their main theoretical and phenomenological challenge is that already predicting LHC effects requires an ultraviolet completion of TeV-scale gravity. In these lecture notes we first give a basic introduction into TeV-scale gravity models and their collider effects and then discuss possible ultraviolet completions, like string theory and fixed-point gravity.
