Central Limit Theorems for global and local empirical measures of diffusions on Erdős-Rényi graphs

We address the issue of the Central Limit Theorem for (both local and global) empirical measures of diffusions interacting on a possibly diluted Erdős-Rényi graph. Special attention is given to the influence of initial condition (not necessarily i.i.d.) on the nature of the limiting fluctuations. We prove in particular that the fluctuations remain the same as in the mean-field framework when the initial condition is chosen independently from the graph. We give an example of non-universal fluctuations for carefully chosen initial data that depends on the graph. A crucial tool for the proof is the use of extensions of Grothendieck inequality.

A note on dynamical models on random graphs and Fokker-Planck equations

We address the issue of the proximity of interacting diffusion models on large graphs with a uniform degree property and a corresponding mean field model, i.e. a model on the complete graph with a suitably renormalized interaction parameter. Examples include Erdős-Rényi graphs with edge probability $p_n$, $n$ is the number of vertices, such that $\lim_{n \to \infty}p_n n= \infty$. The purpose of this note it twofold: (1) to establish this proximity on finite time horizon, by exploiting the fact that both systems are accurately described by a Fokker-Planck PDE (or, equivalently, by a nonlinear diffusion process) in the $n=\infty$ limit; (2) to remark that in reality this result is unsatisfactory when it comes to applying it to systems with $N$ large but finite, for example the values of $N$ that can be reached in simulations or that correspond to the typical number of interacting units in a biological system.

Long time dynamics and disorder-induced traveling waves in the stochastic Kuramoto model

The aim of the paper is to address the long time behavior of the Kuramoto model of mean-field coupled phase rotators, subject to white noise and quenched frequencies. We analyse the influence of the fluctuations of both thermal noise and frequencies (seen as a disorder) on a large but finite population of $N$ rotators, in the case where the law of the disorder is symmetric. On a finite time scale $[0, T]$, the system is known to be self-averaging: the empirical measure of the system converges as $N\to \infty$ to the deterministic solution of a nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation which exhibits a stable manifold of synchronized stationary profiles for large interaction. On longer time scales, competition between the finite-size effects of the noise and disorder makes the system deviate from this mean-field behavior. In the main result of the paper we show that on a time scale of order $ \sqrt{N}$ the fluctuations of the disorder prevail over the fluctuations of the noise: we establish the existence of disorder-induced traveling waves for the empirical measure along the stationary manifold. This result is proved for fixed realizations of the disorder and emphasis is put on the influence of the asymmetry of these quenched frequencies on the direction and speed of rotation of the system. Asymptotics on the drift are provided in the limit of small disorder.

Transition from Gaussian to non-Gaussian fluctuations for mean-field diffusions in spatial interaction

We consider a system of $N$ disordered mean-field interacting diffusions within spatial constraints: each particle $θ_i$ is attached to one site $x_i$ of a periodic lattice and the interaction between particles $θ_i$ and $θ_j$ decreases as $| x_i-x_j|^{-α}$ for $α\in[0,1)$. In a previous work, it was shown that the empirical measure of the particles converges in large population to the solution of a nonlinear partial differential equation of McKean-Vlasov type. The purpose of the present paper is to study the fluctuations associated to this convergence. We exhibit in particular a phase transition in the scaling and in the nature of the fluctuations: when $α\in[0,\frac{1}{2})$, the fluctuations are Gaussian, governed by a linear SPDE, with scaling $\sqrt{N}$ whereas the fluctuations are deterministic with scaling $N^{1-α}$ in the case $α\in(\frac{1}{2},1)$.

Mean field limit for disordered diffusions with singular interactions

Motivated by considerations from neuroscience (macroscopic behavior of large ensembles of interacting neurons), we consider a population of mean field interacting diffusions in $\mathbf {R}^m$ in the presence of a random environment and with spatial extension: each diffusion is attached to one site of the lattice $\mathbf {Z}^d$, and the interaction between two diffusions is attenuated by a spatial weight that depends on their positions. For a general class of singular weights (including the case already considered in the physical literature when interactions obey to a power-law of parameter $0<α<d$), we address the convergence as $N\to\infty$ of the empirical measure of the diffusions to the solution of a deterministic McKean-Vlasov equation and prove well-posedness of this equation, even in the degenerate case without noise. We provide also precise estimates of the speed of this convergence, in terms of an appropriate weighted Wasserstein distance, exhibiting in particular nontrivial fluctuations in the power-law case when $\frac{d}{2}\leqα<d$. Our framework covers the case of polynomially bounded monotone dynamics that are especially encountered in the main models of neural oscillators.

Coherence stability and effect of random natural frequencies in populations of coupled oscillators

We consider the (noisy) Kuramoto model, that is a population of N oscillators, or rotators, with mean-field interaction. Each oscillator has its own randomly chosen natural frequency (quenched disorder) and it is stirred by Brownian motion. In the limit N goes to infty this model is accurately described by a (deterministic) Fokker-Planck equation. We study this equation and obtain quantitatively sharp results in the limit of weak disorder. We show that, in general, even when the natural frequencies have zero mean the oscillators synchronize (for sufficiently strong interaction) around a common rotating phase, whose frequency is sharply estimated. We also establish the stability properties of these solutions (in fact, limit cycles). These results are obtained by identifying the stable hyperbolic manifold of stationary solutions of an associated non disordered model and by exploiting the robustness of hyperbolic structures under suitable perturbations. When the disorder distribution is symmetric the speed vanishes and there is a one parameter family of stationary solutions : in this case we provide more precise stability estimates. The methods we use apply beyond the Kuramoto model and we develop here the case of active rotator models, that is the case in which the dynamics of each rotator in absence of interaction and noise is not simply a rotation.

Quenched limits and fluctuations of the empirical measure for plane rotators in random media

The Kuramoto model has been introduced to describe synchronization phenomena observed in groups of cells, individuals, circuits, etc. The model consists of $N$ interacting oscillators on the one dimensional sphere $\mathbf{S}^{1}$, driven by independent Brownian Motions with constant drift chosen at random. This quenched disorder is chosen independently for each oscillator according to the same law $μ$. The behaviour of the system for large $N$ can be understood via its empirical measure: we prove here the convergence as $N\to\infty$ of the quenched empirical measure to the unique solution of coupled McKean-Vlasov equations, under weak assumptions on the disorder $μ$ and general hypotheses on the interaction. The main purpose of this work is to address the issue of quenched fluctuations around this limit, motivated by the dynamical properties of the disordered system for large but fixed $N$. Whereas we observe a self-averaging for the law of large numbers, this no longer holds for the corresponding central limit theorem: the trajectories of the fluctuations process are sample-dependent.
