Long-term multi-frequency maser observations of the intermediate-mass young stellar object G107.298+5.639

Periodic flares of maser emission are thought to be induced either by variations of the seed photon flux in young binary systems or the pump rate regulated by stellar and accretion luminosities. We seek to study the variability of four maser transitions of three different species in G107.298+5.639 to constrain the dominant mechanism of periodic flares. Light curves of the 6.7 GHz methanol and 22.2 GHz water vapour maser were obtained with the Torun 32m radio telescope over 39 and 34 cycles, respectively. The target was also monitored at the 1.6 GHz hydroxyl transitions with the Nançay radio telescope over 13 cycles. All these maser lines were imaged using VLBI arrays. The study confirms alternating flares of the methanol and water masers with a period of 34.4d and reveals the synchronised behaviour of the methanol and hydroxyl masers in this source. The observed spatial distribution of the methanol maser cloudlets and the measured time delays of the flares of individual features imply a ring-like structure of radius 240au and thickness 30au. Internal proper motions indicate that the velocity of methanol cloudlets is dominated by a disc-wind component of about 5km/s. The methanol emission detected during only one VLBI observation is located in a region about 550au from a central star, which also exhibits OH maser flares. The erratic appearance of methanol features can be related to a powering object of relatively low luminosity which, during some variability cycles, can excite molecules only in the nearest part of the disc. A careful analysis of the maser and infrared light curves reveal a strong correlation between the 6.7 GHz line and the infrared flux densities supporting a radiative pumping of the maser. The synchronised behaviour of the hydroxyl and methanol transitions indicates a common pumping mechanism for the periodic flares of G107.298+5.639.

Modeling the HI 21-cm line profile from circumstellar shells around red giants

We present HI line profiles for various models of circumstellar shells around red giants. In the calculations we take into account the effect of the background at 21 cm, and show that in some circumstances it may have an important effect on the shape and intensity of the observed line profiles. We show that self-absorption should also be considered depending on the mass loss rate and the temperature reached by circumstellar gas. HI emission from circumstellar shells has been mostly reported from stars with mass loss rates around 10$^{-7}$ solar masses per year. We discuss the possible reasons for the non detection of many sources with larger mass loss rates that are hallmarks of the end of the AGB phase. Although radiative transfer effects may weaken the line emission, they cannot alone account for this effect. Therefore, it seems likely that molecular hydrogen, rather than atomic hydrogen, dominates the composition of matter expelled by stars at the end of their evolution on the Asymptotic Giant Branch. However sensitive HI observations can still yield important information on the kinematics and physical properties of the circumstellar material at large distances from central stars with heavy mass loss, despite the low abundance of atomic hydrogen.

On the central symmetry of the circumstellar envelope of RS Cnc

We present a phenomenological study of CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) emission from the circumstellar envelope (CSE) of the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) star RS\,Cnc. It reveals departures from central symmetry that turn out to be efficient tools for the exploration of some of the CSE properties. We use a wind model including a bipolar flow with a typical wind velocity of $\sim$8 km\,s$^{-1}$ decreasing to $\sim$2 km\,s$^{-1}$ near the equator to describe Doppler velocity spectral maps obtained by merging data collected at the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer and Pico Veleta single dish radio telescope. Parameters describing the wind morphology and kinematics are obtained, together with the radial dependence of the gas temperature in the domain of the circumstellar envelope probed by the CO observations. Significant north-south central asymmetries are revealed by the analysis, which we quantify using a simple phenomenological description. The origin of such asymmetries is unclear.

Polarization properties of OH masers in AGB and post-AGB stars

Context: Ground-state OH maser emission from late-type stars is usually polarized and remains a powerful probe of the magnetic field structure in the outer regions of circumstellar envelopes if observed with high angular and spectral resolutions. Observations in all four Stokes parameters are quite sparse and this is the most thorough, systematic study published to date. Aims: We aim to determine polarization properties of OH masers in an extensive sample of stars that show copious mass loss and search for candidate objects that are well-suited for high angular resolution studies. Methods: Full-polarization observations of the OH 1612 and 1667 MHz maser transitions were carried out for a sample of 117 AGB and post-AGB stars. Several targets were also observed in the 1665 MHz line. Results: Polarized features occur in more than 75% of the sources in the complete sample and there is no intrinsic difference in the occurrence of polarized emission between the three classes of objects of different infrared characteristics. The highest fractional polarization occurs for the post-AGB+PN and the Mira+SR classes at 1612 and 1667 MHz, respectively. Differences in the fractional polarization between the sources at different evolutionary stages appear to be related to depolarization caused by blending. The alignment of the polarization angles at the extreme sides of the shell implies a regular structure of the magnetic field of a strength of 0.3-2.3 mG. Conclusions: Polarized OH maser features are widespread in AGB and post-AGB stars. The relationship between the circular and linear fractional polarizations for a representative sample are consistent with the standard models of polarization for the Zeeman splitting higher than the Doppler line width, whereas the polarized features are the sigma components.

HI and CO in the circumstellar environment of the S-type star RS Cnc

This paper presents interferometric and single-dish CO observations along with HI data obtained for the oxygen-rich semi-regular variable RS Cnc, in order to probe its circumstellar environment at different scales. With the Plateau de Bure Interferometer and the IRAM 30-m telescope, we detect both the CO(1-0) and the CO(2-1) rotational lines from RS Cnc. The line profiles are composite, with two components of half-width ~2 km/s and ~8 km/s respectively. Whereas the narrow velocity component seems to originate from an equatorial disk in the central part of the CO envelope, the broad component reveals a bipolar structure, with a north-south velocity gradient. In addition, we obtain new HI data on the source and around it in a field of almost 1 square degree. The HI line is centered at v_LSR = 7 km/s in agreement with CO observations. A new reduction process reveals a complex extended structure in the northwest direction, of estimated size ~18 arcmin, with a PA (~310 degrees) opposite to the direction of the stellar proper motion (~140 degrees). We derive an HI mass of ~3 10^-2 M_sun for this structure. Based on a non-spherical simulation, we find that this structure is consistent with arising from the interaction of the star undergoing mass loss at an average rate of ~10^-7 M_sun.yr^-1 over ~2-3 10^5 years with the interstellar medium. This work illustrates the powerful complementarity of CO and HI observations with regard to a more complete description of circumstellar environments around AGB stars.
