On conjugacy of Cartan subalgebras in extended affine Lie algebras

That finite-dimensional simple Lie algebras over the complex numbers can be classified by means of purely combinatorial and geometric objects such as Coxeter-Dynkin diagrams and indecomposable irreducible root systems, is arguably one of the most elegant results in mathematics. The definition of the root system is done by fixing a Cartan subalgebra of the given Lie algebra. The remarkable fact is that (up to isomorphism) this construction is independent of the choice of the Cartan subalgebra. The modern way of establishing this fact is by showing that all Cartan subalgebras are conjugate. For symmetrizable Kac-Moody Lie algebras, with the appropriate definition of Cartan subalgebra, conjugacy has been established by Peterson and Kac. An immediate consequence of this result is that the root systems and generalized Cartan matrices are invariants of the Kac-Moody Lie algebras. The purpose of this paper is to establish conjugacy of Cartan subalgebras for extended affine Lie algebras; a natural class of Lie algebras that generalizes the finite-dimensional simple Lie algebra and affine Kac-Moody Lie algebras.

Extensions and block decompositions for finite-dimensional representations of equivariant map algebras

Suppose a finite group acts on a scheme $X$ and a finite-dimensional Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. The associated equivariant map algebra is the Lie algebra of equivariant regular maps from $X$ to $\mathfrak{g}$. The irreducible finite-dimensional representations of these algebras were classified in previous work with P. Senesi, where it was shown that they are all tensor products of evaluation representations and one-dimensional representations. In the current paper, we describe the extensions between irreducible finite-dimensional representations of an equivariant map algebra in the case that $X$ is an affine scheme of finite type and $\mathfrak{g}$ is reductive. This allows us to also describe explicitly the blocks of the category of finite-dimensional representations in terms of spectral characters, whose definition we extend to this general setting. Applying our results to the case of generalized current algebras (the case where the group acting is trivial), we recover known results but with very different proofs. For (twisted) loop algebras, we recover known results on block decompositions (again with very different proofs) and new explicit formulas for extensions. Finally, specializing our results to the case of (twisted) multiloop algebras and generalized Onsager algebras yields previously unknown results on both extensions and block decompositions.

Basic polynomial invariants, fundamental representations and the Chern class map

Consider a crystallographic root system together with its Weyl group $W$ acting on the weight lattice $M$. Let $Z[M]^W$ and $S^*(M)^W$ be the $W$-invariant subrings of the integral group ring $Z[M]$ and the symmetric algebra $S^*(M)$ respectively. A celebrated theorem of Chevalley says that $Z[M]^W$ is a polynomial ring over $Z$ in classes of fundamental representations $w_1,...,w_n$ and $S^*(M)^{W}$ over rational numbers is a polynomial ring in basic polynomial invariants $q_1,...,q_n$, where $n$ is the rank. In the present paper we establish and investigate the relationship between $w_i$'s and $q_i$'s over the integers. As an application we provide an annihilator of the torsion part of the 3rd and the 4th quotients of the Grothendieck gamma-filtration on the variety of Borel subgroups of the associated linear algebraic group.

Irreducible finite-dimensional representations of equivariant map algebras

Suppose a finite group acts on a scheme X and a finite-dimensional Lie algebra g. The corresponding equivariant map algebra is the Lie algebra M of equivariant regular maps from X to g. We classify the irreducible finite-dimensional representations of these algebras. In particular, we show that all such representations are tensor products of evaluation representations and one-dimensional representations, and we establish conditions ensuring that they are all evaluation representations. For example, this is always the case if M is perfect. Our results can be applied to multiloop algebras, current algebras, the Onsager algebra, and the tetrahedron algebra. Doing so, we easily recover the known classifications of irreducible finite-dimensional representations of these algebras. Moreover, we obtain previously unknown classifications of irreducible finite-dimensional representations of other types of equivariant map algebras, such as the generalized Onsager algebra.

Lie tori of type B_2 and graded-simple Jordan structures covered by a triangle

We classify two classes of B_2-graded Lie algebras which have a second compatible grading by an abelian group A: (a) graded-simple Lie algebras for A torsion-free and (b) division-A-graded Lie algebras. Our results describe the centreless cores of a class of affine reflection Lie algebras, hence apply in particular to the centreless cores of extended affine Lie algebras, the so-called Lie tori, for which we recover results of Allison-Gao and Faulkner. Our classification (b) extends a recent result of Benkart-Yoshii. Both classifications are consequences of a new description of Jordan algebras covered by a triangle, which correspond to these Lie algebras via the Tits-Kantor-Koecher construction. The Jordan algebra classifications follow from our results on graded-triangulated Jordan triple systems. They generalize work of McCrimmon and the first author as well as the Osborn-McCrimmon-Capacity-2-Theorem in the ungraded case.
