On a quadratic form associated with a surface automorphism and its applications to Singularity Theory

We study the nilpotent part $N'$ of a pseudo-periodic automorphism $h$ of a real oriented surface with boundary $Σ$. We associate a quadratic form $Q$ defined on the first homology group (relative to the boundary) of the surface $Σ$. Using the twist formula and techniques from mapping class group theory, we prove that the form $\tilde{Q}$ obtained after killing ${\ker N}$ is positive definite if all the screw numbers associated with certain orbits of annuli are positive. We also prove that the restriction of $\tilde Q$ to the absolute homology group of $Σ$ is even whenever the quotient of the Nielsen-Thurston graph under the action of the automorphism is a tree. The case of monodromy automorphisms of Milnor fibers $Σ=F$ of germs of curves on normal surface singularities is discussed in detail, and the aforementioned results are specialized to such situation. Moreover, the form $\tilde{Q}$ is computable in terms of the dual resolution or semistable reduction graph, as illustrated with several examples. Numerical invariants associated with $\tilde{Q}$ are able to distinguish plane curve singularities with different topological types but same spectral pairs. Finally, we discuss a generic linear germ defined on a superisolated surface. In this case the plumbing graph is not a tree and the restriction of $\tilde Q$ to the absolute monodromy of $Σ=F$ is not even.

Rational homology disk smoothings of surface singularities; the exceptional cases

It is known (Stipsicz-Szabó-Wahl) that there are exactly three triply-infinite and seven singly-infinite families of weighted homogeneous normal surface singularities admitting a rational homology disk ($\mathbb{Q}$HD) smoothing, i.e., having a Milnor fibre with Milnor number zero. Some examples are found by an explicit "quotient construction", while others require the "Pinkham method". The fundamental group of the Milnor fibre has been known for all except the three exceptional families $\mathcal B_2^3(p), \mathcal C^3_2(p),$ and $\mathcal C^3_3(p)$. In this paper, we settle these cases. We present a new explicit construction for the $\mathcal B_2^3(p)$ family, showing the fundamental group is non-abelian (as occurred previously only for the $\mathcal A^4(p), \mathcal B^4(p)$ and $\mathcal C^4(p)$ cases). We show that the fundamental groups for $ \mathcal C^3_2(p)$ and $\mathcal C^3_3(p)$ are abelian, hence easily computed; using the Pinkham method here requires precise calculations for the fundamental group of the complement of a plane curve.

Orbifold groups, quasi-projectivity and covers

We discuss properties of complex algebraic orbifold groups, their characteristic varieties, and their abelian covers. In particular, we deal with the question of (quasi)-projectivity of orbifold groups. We also prove a structure theorem for the variety of characters of normal-crossing quasi-projective orbifold groups. Finally, we extend Sakuma's formula for the first Betti number of abelian covers of orbifold fundamental groups. Several examples are presented, including a compact orbifold group which is not projective and a Zariski pair of plane projective curves that can be told by considering an unbranched cover of the projective plane with an orbifold structure.
