Chiral-symmetry breaking and pion structure in the Covariant Spectator Theory

We introduce a covariant approach in Minkowski space for the description of quarks and mesons that exhibits both chiral-symmetry breaking and confinement. In a simple model for the interquark interaction the quark mass function is obtained and used in the calculation of the pion form factor. We study the effects of the mass function and of the different quark pole contributions on the pion form factor.

Covariant Spectator Theory of heavy-light and heavy mesons and the predictive power of covariant interaction kernels

The Covariant Spectator Theory (CST) is used to calculate the mass spectrum and vertex functions of heavy-light and heavy mesons in Minkowski space. The covariant kernel contains Lorentz scalar, pseudoscalar, and vector contributions. The numerical calculations are performed in momentum space, where special care is taken to treat the strong singularities present in the confining kernel. The observed meson spectrum is very well reproduced after fitting a small number of model parameters. Remarkably, a fit to a few pseudoscalar meson states only, which are insensitive to spin-orbit and tensor forces and do not allow to separate the spin-spin from the central interaction, leads to essentially the same model parameters as a more general fit. This demonstrates that the covariance of the chosen interaction kernel is responsible for the very accurate prediction of the spin-dependent quark-antiquark interactions.

Charge-conjugation symmetric complete impulse approximation for the pion electromagnetic form factor in the Covariant Spectator Theory

The pion form factor is calculated in the framework of the charge-conjugation invariant Covariant Spectator Theory. This formalism is established in Minkowski space and the calculation is set up in momentum space. In a previous calculation we included only the leading pole coming from the spectator quark (referred to as the relativistic impulse approximation). In this paper we also include the contributions from the poles of the quark which interacts with the photon and average over all poles in both the upper and lower half planes in order to preserve charge conjugation invariance (referred to as the $C$-symmetric complete impulse approximation). We find that for small pion mass these contributions are significant at all values of the four-momentum transfer $Q^2$ but, surprisingly, do not alter the shape obtained from the spectator poles alone.

Quark model with chiral-symmetry breaking and confinement in the Covariant Spectator Theory

We propose a model for the quark-antiquark interaction in Minkowski space using the Covariant Spectator Theory. We show that with an equal-weighted scalar-pseudoscalar structure for the confining part of our interaction kernel the axial-vector Ward-Takahashi identity is preserved and our model complies with the Adler-zero constraint for pi-pi-scattering imposed by chiral symmetry.

Quarkonia and heavy-light mesons in a covariant quark model

Preliminary calculations using the Covariant Spectator Theory (CST) employed a scalar linear confining interaction and an additional constant vector potential to compute the mesonic mass spectra. In this work we generalize the confining interaction to include more general structures, in particular a vector and also a pseudoscalar part, as suggested by a recent study. A one-gluon-exchange kernel is also implemented to describe the short-range part of the interaction. We solve the simplest CST approximation to the complete Bethe-Salpeter equation, the one-channel spectator equation, using a numerical technique that eliminates all singularities from the kernel. The parameters of the model are determined through a fit to the experimental pseudoscalar meson spectra, with a good agreement for both quarkonia and heavy-light states.

Chiral symmetry and pi-pi scattering in the Covariant Spectator Theory

The pi-pi scattering amplitude calculated with a model for the quark-antiquark interaction in the framework of the Covariant Spectator Theory (CST) is shown to satisfy the Adler zero constraint imposed by chiral symmetry. The CST formalism is established in Minkowski space and our calculations are performed in momentum space. We prove that the axial-vector Ward-Takahashi identity is satisfied by our model. Then we show that, similar to what happens within the Bethe-Salpeter formalism, application of the axial-vector Ward-Takahashi identity to the CST pi-pi scattering amplitude allows us to sum the intermediate quark-quark interactions to all orders. The Adler self-consistency zero for pi-pi scattering in the chiral limit emerges as the result for this sum.

Chiral-symmetry breaking and confinement in Minkowski space

We present a model for the quark-antiquark interaction formulated in Minkowski space using the Covariant Spectator Theory. The quark propagators are dressed with the same kernel that describes the interaction between different quarks. By applying the axial-vector Ward-Takahashi identity we show that our model satisfies the Adler-zero constraint imposed by chiral symmetry. For this model, our Minkowski-space results of the dressed quark mass function are compared to lattice QCD data obtained in Euclidean space. The mass function is then used in the calculation of the electromagnetic pion form factor in relativistic impulse approximation, and the results are presented and compared with the experimental data from JLab.

Confinement, quark mass functions, and spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in Minkowski space

We formulate the covariant equations for quark-antiquark bound states in Minkowski space in the framework of the Covariant Spectator Theory. The quark propagators are dressed with the same kernel that describes the interaction between different quarks. We show that these equations are charge-conjugation invariant, and that in the chiral limit of vanishing bare quark mass, a massless pseudoscalar bound state is produced in a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) mechanism, which is associated with the Goldstone boson of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking. In this introductory paper, we test the formalism by using a simplified kernel consisting of a momentum-space delta-function with a vector Lorentz structure, to which one adds a mixed scalar and vector confining interaction. The scalar part of the confining interaction is not chirally invariant by itself, but decouples from the equations in the chiral limit and therefore allows the NJL mechanism to work. With this model we calculate the quark mass function, and we compare our Minkowski-space results to lattice QCD data obtained in Euclidean space. In a companion paper, we apply this formalism to a calculation of the pion form factor.

Electromagnetic rho-meson form factors in point-form relativistic quantum mechanics

The relativistic point-form formalism that we proposed for the study of the electroweak structure of few-body bound states is applied to calculate the elastic form factors of spin-1 mesons, such as the rho meson, within constituent-quark models. We treat electron-meson scattering as a Poincare-invariant coupled-channel problem for a Bakamjian-Thomas mass operator and extract the meson current from the resulting invariant 1-photon-exchange amplitude. Wrong cluster properties inherent in the Bakamjian-Thomas framework are seen to cause spurious contributions in the current. These contributions, however, can be separated unambiguously from the physical ones and we end up with a meson current with all required properties. Numerical results for the rho-meson form factors are presented assuming a simple harmonic-oscillator bound-state wave function. The comparison with other approaches reveals a remarkable agreement of our results with those obtained within the covariant light-front scheme proposed by Carbonell et al. [Phys. Rep. 300, 215 (1998)].

Linear confinement in momentum space: singularity-free bound-state equations

Relativistic equations of Bethe-Salpeter type for hadron structure are most conveniently formulated in momentum space. The presence of confining interactions causes complications because the corresponding kernels are singular. This occurs not only in the relativistic case but also in the nonrelativistic Schrödinger equation where this problem can be studied more easily. For the linear confining interaction the singularity reduces to one of Cauchy principal value form. Although this singularity is integrable, it still makes accurate numerical solutions difficult. We show that this principal value singularity can be eliminated by means of a subtraction method. The resulting equation is much easier to solve and yields accurate and stable solutions. To test the method's numerical efficiency, we performed a three-parameter least-squares fit of a simple linear-plus-Coulomb potential to the bottomonium spectrum.

Pion electromagnetic form factor in the Covariant Spectator Theory

The pion electromagnetic form factor at spacelike momentum transfer is calculated in relativistic impulse approximation using the Covariant Spectator Theory. The same dressed quark mass function and the equation for the pion bound-state vertex function as discussed in the companion paper are used for the calculation, together with a dressed quark current that satisfies the Ward-Takahashi identity. The results obtained for the pion form factor are in agreement with experimental data, they exhibit the typical monopole behavior at high-momentum transfer, and they satisfy some remarkable scaling relations.

Quark mass functions and pion structure in Minkowski space

We present a study of the dressed quark mass function and the pion structure in Minkowski space using the Covariant Spectator Theory. The quark propagators are dressed with the same kernel that describes the interaction between different quarks. We use an interaction kernel in momentum space that is a relativistic generalization of the linear confining q-qbar potential and a constant potential shift that defines the energy scale. The confining interaction has a Lorentz scalar part that is not chirally invariant by itself but decouples from the equations in the chiral limit and therefore allows the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio mechanism to work. We adjust the parameters of our quark mass function calculated in Minkowski-space to agree with Lattice QCD data obtained in Euclidean space. Results of a calculation of the pion electromagnetic form factor in the relativistic impulse approximation using the same mass function are presented and compared with experimental data.

Singularity-free two-body equation with confining interactions in momentum space

We are developing a covariant model for all mesons that can be described as quark-antiquark bound states in the framework of the Covariant Spectator Theory (CST) in Minkowski space. The kernel of the bound-state equation contains a relativistic generalization of a linear confining potential which is singular in momentum space and makes its numerical solution more difficult. The same type of singularity is present in the momentum-space Schrödinger equation, which is obtained in the nonrelativistic limit. We present an alternative, singularity-free form of the momentum-space Schrödinger equation which is much easier to solve numerically and which yields accurate and stable results. The same method will be applied to the numerical solution of the CST bound-state equations.

Scalar-particle self-energy amplitudes and confinement in Minkowski space

We analyze the analytic structure of the Covariant Spectator Theory (CST) contribution to the self-energy amplitude for a scalar particle in a ϕ^2 χ-theory. To this end we derive dispersion relations in 1+1 and in 3+1 dimensional Minkowski space. The divergent loop integrals in 3+1 dimensions are regularized using dimensional regularization. We find that the CST dispersion relations exhibit, in addition to the usual right-hand branch cut, also a left-hand cut. The origin of this "spectator" left-hand cut can be understood in the context of scattering for a scalar ϕ^2 χ^2-type theory. If the interaction kernel contains a linear confining component, its contribution to the self-energy vanishes exactly.

Electromagnetic Properties of Few-Body Systems Within a Point-Form Approach

We use a Poincare-invariant coupled-channel approach based on point-form relativistic quantum mechanics to investigate the electromagnetic properties of two-body bound systems with spin 0 and spin 1. Elastic scattering of an electron by the bound state is treated as a two-channel problem for a Bakamjian-Thomas-type mass operator. In this way retardation effects in the photon-exchange interaction are fully taken into account. The electromagnetic bound-state current is extracted from the one-photon-exchange optical potential. Wrong cluster properties, inherent in the Bakamjian-Thomas framework for more than 2 particles, are seen to cause spurious (unphysical) contributions in the current, which are associated with a dependence on the sum of the electron momenta. The Lorentz structure of our current resembles the one obtained from an explicitly covariant light-front approach, where spurious contributions also show up and are associated with a four-vector describing the orientation of the light front. For spin-0 systems, like a charged pion, the spurious contributions can be eliminated by choosing the total invariant mass of the electron-bound-state system large enough. In this case equivalence with the usual front-form expression for the form factor, resulting from a spectator current in the q^+=0 reference frame, is established. For spin-1 systems, like a charged rho meson or the deuteron, some spurious contributions cannot be completely eliminated by solely choosing an infinitely large invariant mass. Nevertheless, there is an unambiguous way how to separate them from the physical contributions such that one is left with a physical bound-state current with the required properties.

Quantization on Space-Time Hyperboloids

We quantize a relativistic massive complex spin-0 field and a relativistic massive spin-1/2 field on a space-time hyperboloid. We call this procedure point-form canonical quantization. Lorentz invariance of the hyperboloid implies that the 4 generators for translations become dynamic and interaction dependent, whereas the 6 generators for Lorentz transformations remain kinematic and interaction free. We expand the fields in terms of usual plane waves and prove the equivalence to equal-time quantization by representing the Poincare generators in a momentum basis. We formulate a generalized scattering theory for interacting fields by considering evolution of the system generated by the interaction dependent four-momentum operator. Finally we expand our generalized scattering operator in powers of the interaction and show its equivalence to the Dyson expansion of usual time-ordered perturbation theory.

A relativistic coupled-channel formalism for electromagnetic form factors of 2-body bound states

We discuss a Poincaré invariant coupled-channel formalism which is based on the point-form of relativistic quantum mechanics. Electromagnetic scattering of an electron by a 2-body bound state is treated as a 2-channel problem for a Bakamjian-Thomas-type mass operator. In this way retardation effects in the photon-exchange interaction are fully taken into account. The electromagnetic current of the 2-body bound state is then extracted from the one-photon-exchange optical potential. As an application we calculate electromagnetic pion and deuteron form factors. Wrong cluster properties, inherent in the Bakamjian-Thomas framework, are seen to cause spurious (unphysical) contributions in the current. These are separated and eliminated in an unambiguous way such that one is left with a current that has all the desired properties.

Point-Form Hamiltonian Dynamics and Applications

This short review summarizes recent developments and results in connection with point-form dynamics of relativistic quantum systems. We discuss a Poincare invariant multichannel formalism which describes particle production and annihilation via vertex interactions that are derived from field theoretical interaction densities. We sketch how this rather general formalism can be used to derive electromagnetic form factors of confined quark-antiquark systems. As a further application it is explained how the chiral constituent quark model leads to hadronic states that can be considered as bare hadrons dressed by meson loops. Within this approach hadron resonances acquire a finite (non-perturbative) decay width. We will also discuss the point-form dynamics of quantum fields. After recalling basic facts of the free-field case we will address some quantum field theoretical problems for which canonical quantization on a space-time hyperboloid could be advantageous.

Electromagnetic meson form factor from a relativistic coupled-channel approach

Point-form relativistic quantum mechanics is used to derive an expression for the electromagnetic form factor of a pseudoscalar meson for space-like momentum transfers. The elastic scattering of an electron by a confined quark-antiquark pair is treated as a relativistic two-channel problem for the $q\bar{q}e$ and $q\bar{q}eγ$ states. With the approximation that the total velocity of the $q\bar{q}e$ system is conserved at (electromagnetic) interaction vertices this simplifies to an eigenvalue problem for a Bakamjian-Thomas type mass operator. After elimination of the $q\bar{q}eγ$ channel the electromagnetic meson current and form factor can be directly read off from the one-photon-exchange optical potential. By choosing the invariant mass of the electron-meson system large enough, cluster separability violations become negligible. An equivalence with the usual front-form expression, resulting from a spectator current in the $q^+=0$ reference frame, is established. The generalization of this multichannel approach to electroweak form factors for an arbitrary bound few-body system is quite obvious. By an appropriate extension of the Hilbert space this approach is also able to accommodate exchange-current effects.
