Specifying nonlocality of a pure bipartite state and analytical relations between measures for bipartite nonlocality and entanglement

For a multipartite quantum state, the maximal violation of all Bell inequalities constitutes a measure of its nonlocality [Loubenets, J. Math. Phys. 53, 022201 (2012)]. In the present article, for the maximal violation of Bell inequalities by a pure bipartite state, possibly infinite-dimensional, we derive a new upper bound expressed in terms of the Schmidt coefficients of this state. This new upper bound allows us also to specify general analytical relations between the maximal violation of Bell inequalities by a bipartite quantum state, pure or mixed, and such entanglement measures for this state as "negativity" and "concurrence". To our knowledge, no any general analytical relations between measures for bipartite nonlocality and entanglement have been reported in the literature though, for a general bipartite state, specifically such relations are important for the entanglement certification and quantification scenarios. As an example, we apply our new results to finding upper bounds on nonlocality of bipartite coherent states intensively discussed last years in the literature in view of their experimental implementations.

New general lower and upper bounds under minimum-error quantum state discrimination

For the optimal success probability under minimum-error discrimination between $r\geq2$ arbitrary quantum states prepared with any a priori probabilities, we find new general analytical lower and upper bounds and specify the relations between these new general bounds and the general bounds known in the literature. We also present the example where the new general analytical bounds, lower and upper, on the optimal success probability are tighter than most of the general analytical bounds known in the literature. The new upper bound on the optimal success probability explicitly generalizes to $r>2$ the form of the Helstrom bound. For $r=2$, each of our new bounds, lower and upper, reduces to the Helstrom bound.

Specifying the unitary evolution of a qudit for a general nonstationary Hamiltonian via the generalized Gell-Mann representation

Optimal realizations of quantum technology tasks lead to the necessity of a detailed analytical study of the behavior of a $d$-level quantum system (qudit) under a time-dependent Hamiltonian. In the present article, we introduce a new general formalism describing the unitary evolution of a qudit $(d\geq2)$ in terms of the Bloch-like vector space and specify how in a general case this formalism is related to finding time-dependent parameters in the exponential representation of the evolution operator under an arbitrary time-dependent Hamiltonian. Applying this new general formalism to a qubit case $(d=2)$, we specify the unitary evolution of a qubit via the evolution of a unit vector in $\mathbb{R}^{4}$ and this allows us to derive the precise analytical expression of the qubit unitary evolution operator for a wide class of nonstationary Hamiltonians. This new analytical expression includes the qubit solutions known in the literature only as particular cases.

Context-invariant and local quasi hidden variable (qHV) modelling versus contextual and nonlocal HV modelling

For all the joint von Neumann measurements on a D-dimensional quantum system, we present the specific example of a context-invariant quasi hidden variable (qHV) model, proved in [Loubenets, J. Math. Phys. 56, 032201 (2015)] to exist for each Hilbert space. In this model, a quantum observable X is represented by a variety of random variables satisfying the functional condition required in quantum foundations but, in contrast to a contextual model, each of these random variables equivalently models X under all joint von Neumann measurements, regardless of their contexts. This, in particular, implies the specific local qHV (LqHV) model for an N-qudit state and allows us to derive the new exact upper bound on the maximal violation of 2x...x2-setting Bell-type inequalities of any type (either on correlation functions or on joint probabilities) under N-partite joint von Neumann measurements on an N-qudit state. For d=2, this new upper bound coincides with the maximal violation by an N-qubit state of the Mermin-Klyshko inequality. Based on our results, we discuss the conceptual and mathematical advantages of context-invariant and local qHV modelling.

Context-invariant quasi hidden variable (qHV) modelling of all joint von Neumann measurements for an arbitrary Hilbert space

We prove the existence for each Hilbert space of the two new quasi hidden variable (qHV) models, statistically noncontextual and context-invariant, reproducing all the von Neumann joint probabilities via nonnegative values of real-valued measures and all the quantum product expectations -- via the qHV (classical-like) average of the product of the corresponding random variables. In a context-invariant model, a quantum observable X can be represented by a variety of random variables satisfying the functional condition required in quantum foundations but each of these random variables equivalently models X under all joint von Neumann measurements, regardless of their contexts. The proved existence of this model negates the general opinion that, in terms of random variables, the Hilbert space description of all the joint von Neumann measurements for dimH>2 can be reproduced only contextually. The existence of a statistically noncontextual qHV model, in particular, implies that every N-partite quantum state admits a local quasi hidden variable (LqHV) model introduced in [Loubenets, J. Math. Phys. 53, 022201 (2012)]. The new results of the present paper point also to the generality of the quasi-classical probability model proposed in [Loubenets, J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 45, 185306 (2012)].

All joint von Neumann measurements on a quantum state admit a quasi-classical probability model

We prove that the Hilbert space description of all joint von Neumann measurements on a quantum state can be reproduced in terms of a single measure space (Ω, F, μ) with a normalized real-valued measure μ, that is, in terms of a new general probability model, the quasi-classical probability model, developed in [Loubenets: J. Math. Phys. 53 (2012), 022201; J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 45 (2012), 185306]. In a quasi-classical probability model for all von Neumann measurements, a random variable models the corresponding quantum observable in all joint measurements and depends only on this quantum observable. This mathematical result sheds a new light on some important issues of quantum randomness discussed in the literature since the seminal article (1935) of Einstein, Podolsky and Rosen.

Local quasi hidden variable modelling and violations of Bell-type inequalities by a multipartite quantum state

We introduce for a general correlation scenario a new simulation model, a local quasi hidden variable (LqHV) model, where locality and the measure-theoretic structure inherent to an LHV model are preserved but positivity of a simulation measure is dropped. We specify a necessary and sufficient condition for LqHV modelling and, based on this, prove that every quantum correlation scenario admits an LqHV simulation. Via the LqHV approach, we construct analogs of Bell-type inequalities for an N-partite quantum state and find a new analytical upper bound on the maximal violation by an N-partite quantum state of S_{1}x...xS_{N}-setting Bell-type inequalities - either on correlation functions or on joint probabilities and for outcomes of an arbitrary spectral type, discrete or continuous. This general analytical upper bound is expressed in terms of the new state dilation characteristics introduced in the present paper and not only traces quantum states admitting an S_{1}x...xS_{N}-setting LHV description but also leads to the new exact numerical upper estimates on the maximal Bell violations for concrete N-partite quantum states used in quantum information processing and for an arbitrary N-partite quantum state. We, in particular, prove that violation by an N-partite quantum state of an arbitrary Bell-type inequality (either on correlation functions or on joint probabilities) for S settings per site cannot exceed (2S-1)^{N-1} even in case of an infinite dimensional quantum state and infinitely many outcomes.

Nonsignaling as the consistency condition for local quasi classical probability modelling of a general multipartite correlation scenario

We specify for a general correlation scenario a particular type of a local quasi hidden variable (LqHV) model [J. Math. Phys. 53 (2012), 022201] -- a deterministic LqHV model, where all joint probability distributions of a correlation scenario are simulated via a single measure space with a normalized bounded real-valued measure not necessarily positive and random variables, each depending only on a setting of the corresponding measurement at the corresponding site. We prove that an arbitrary multipartite correlation scenario admits a deterministic LqHV model if and only if all its joint probability distributions satisfy the consistency condition constituting the general nonsignaling condition formulated in [J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 41 (2008), 445303]. This mathematical result specifies a new probability model that has the measure-theoretic structure resembling the structure of the classical probability model but incorporates the latter only as a particular case. The local version of this quasi classical probability model covers the probabilistic description of every nonsignaling correlation scenario, in particular, each correlation scenario on an multipartite quantum state.

Upper bounds on violation of Bell-type inequalities by a multipartite quantum state

We present the new exact upper bounds on the maximal Bell violation for the generalized N-qubit GHZ state, the N-qudit GHZ state and, in general, for an arbitrary N-partite quantum state, possibly infinite-dimensional. Our results indicate that, for an N-partite quantum state of any Hilbert space dimension, violation of any Bell-type inequality (either on correlation functions or on joint probabilities) with S settings and any number of outcomes at each site cannot exceed (2S-1)^{N-1}.

Local hidden variable modelling, classicality, quantum separability, and the original Bell inequality

We introduce a general condition sufficient for the validity of the original Bell inequality (1964) in a local hidden variable (LHV) frame. This condition can be checked experimentally and incorporates only as a particular case the assumption on perfect correlations or anticorrelations usually argued for this inequality in the literature. Specifying this general condition for a quantum bipartite case, we introduce the whole class of bipartite quantum states, separable and nonseparable, that (i) admit an LHV description under any bipartite measurements with two settings per site; (ii) do not necessarily exhibit perfect correlations and may even have a negative correlation function if the same quantum observable is measured at both sites but (iii) satisfy the "perfect correlation" version of the original Bell inequality for any three bounded quantum observables A, A'=B, B' at sites "A" and "B", respectively. Analysing the validity of this general LHV condition under classical and quantum correlation experiments with the same physical context, we stress that, unlike the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) inequality, the original Bell inequality distinguishes between classicality and quantum separability.

On the probabilistic description of a multipartite correlation scenario with arbitrary numbers of settings and outcomes per site

We consistently formalize the probabilistic description of multipartite joint measurements performed on systems of any nature. This allows us: (1) to specify in probabilistic terms the difference between nonsignaling, the Einstein- Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) locality and Bell's locality; (2) to introduce the notion of an LHV model for an S_{1}x...xS_{N}-setting N-partite correlation experiment, with outcomes of any spectral type, discrete or continuous, and to prove both general and specific "quantum" statements on an LHV simulation in an arbitrary multipartite case; (3) to classify LHV models for a multipartite quantum state, in particular, to show that any N-partite quantum state, pure or mixed, admits an Sx1x...x1 -setting LHV description; (4) to evaluate a threshold visibility for a noisy bipartite quantum state to admit an S_{1}xS_ {2}-setting LHV description under any generalized quantum measurements of two parties. In a sequel to this paper, we shall introduce a single general representation incorporating in a unique manner all Bell-type inequalities for either joint probabilities or correlation functions that have been introduced or will be introduced in the literature.

Quantum states satisfying classical probability constraints

For linear combinations of quantum product averages in an arbitrary bipartite state, we derive new quantum Bell-form and CHSH-form inequalities with the right-hand sides expressed in terms of a bipartite state. This allows us to specify in a general setting bipartite state properties sufficient for the validity of a classical CHSH-form inequality and the perfect correlation form of the original Bell inequality for any bounded quantum observables. We also introduce a new general condition on a bipartite state and quantum observables sufficient for the validity of the original Bell inequality, in its perfect correlation or anticorrelation forms. Under this general sufficient condition, a bipartite quantum state does not necessarily exhibit perfect correlations or anticorrelations.

Quantum stochastic approach to the description of quantum measurements

In the present paper we consider the problem of description of an arbitrary generalized quantum measurement with outcomes in a measurable space. Analyzing the unitary invariants of a measuring process, we present the most general form of a possible integral representation of an instrument, which differs from the representations of an instrument available in the mathematical and physical literature. We introduce the notion of a quantum stochastic representation of an instrument, whose elements are wholly determined by the unitary invariants of a measuring process. We show that the description of a generalized direct quantum measurement can be considered in the frame of a new general approach, which we call the quantum stochastic approach (QSA), based on the notion of a family of quantum stochastic evolution operators, satisfying the orthonormality relation and describing the conditional evolution of a quantum system under a measurement. The QSA allows to give: a) the complete statistical description of any generalized direct quantum measurement (a POV measure and a family of posterior states); b) the complete description in a Hilbert space of the stochastic behaviour of a quantum system under a measurement in the sense of specification of the probabilistic transition law governing the change from the initial state of a quantum system to a final one under a single measurement; c) to formalize the consideration of all possible types of quantum measurements. For measurements continuous in time the QSA allows, in particular, to define in the most general case (without assuming any Markov property) the notion of posterior pure state trajectories (quantum trajectories) and to give their probabilistic treatment.
