Sums of singular series and primes in short intervals in algebraic number fields

Gross and Smith have put forward generalizations of Hardy - Littlewood twin prime conjectures for algebraic number fields. We estimate the behavior of sums of a singular series that arises in these conjectures, up to lower order terms. More exactly, we find asymptotic formulas for smoothed sums of the singular series minus one. Based upon Gross and Smith's conjectures, we use our result to suggest that for large enough 'short intervals' in an algebraic number field K, the variance of counts of prime elements in a random short interval deviates from a Cramer model prediction by a universal factor, independent of K. The conjecture over number fields generalizes a classical conjecture of Goldston and Montgomery over the integers. Numerical data is provided supporting the conjecture.

Moments of quadratic twists of elliptic curve L-functions over function fields

We calculate the first and second moments of L-functions in the family of quadratic twists of a fixed elliptic curve E over F_q[x], asymptotically in the limit as the degree of the twists tends to infinity. We also compute moments involving derivatives of L-functions over quadratic twists, enabling us to deduce lower bounds on the correlations between the analytic ranks of the twists of two distinct curves.

Square-full polynomials in short intervals and in arithmetic progressions

We study the variance of sums of the indicator function of square-full polynomials in both arithmetic progressions and short intervals. Our work is in the context of the ring $F_{q}[T]$ of polynomials over a finite field $F_{q}$ of $q$ elements, in the limit $q\rightarrow\infty$. We use a recent equidistribution result due to N. Katz to express these variances in terms of triple matrix integrals over the unitary group, and evaluate them.

Sums of divisor functions in $F_{q}[t]$ and matrix integrals

We study the mean square of sums of the $k$th divisor function $d_k(n)$ over short intervals and arithmetic progressions for the rational function field over a finite field of $q$ elements. In the limit as $q\rightarrow\infty$ we establish a relationship with a matrix integral over the unitary group. Evaluating this integral enables us to compute the mean square of the sums of $d_k(n)$ in terms of a lattice point count. This lattice point count can in turn be calculated in terms of certain polynomials, which we analyse. Our results suggest general conjectures for the corresponding classical problems over the integers, which agree with the few cases where the answer is known.

Low-lying zeros of quadratic Dirichlet L-functions, hyper-elliptic curves and Random Matrix Theory

The statistics of low-lying zeros of quadratic Dirichlet L-functions were conjectured by Katz and Sarnak to be given by the scaling limit of eigenvalues from the unitary symplectic ensemble. The n-level densities were found to be in agreement with this in a certain neighborhood of the origin in the Fourier domain by Rubinstein in his Ph.D. thesis in 1998. An attempt to extend the neighborhood was made in the Ph.D. thesis of Peng Gao (2005), who under GRH gave the density as a complicated combinatorial factor, but it remained open whether it coincides with the Random Matrix Theory factor. For n at most 7 this was recently confirmed by Levinson and Miller. We resolve this problem for all n, not by directly doing the combinatorics, but by passing to a function field analogue, of L-functions associated to hyper-elliptic curves of given genus g over a field of q elements. We show that the answer in this case coincides with Gao's combinatorial factor up to a controlled error. We then take the limit of large finite field size q to infinity and use the Katz-Sarnak equidistribution theorem, which identifies the monodromy of the Frobenius conjugacy classes for the hyperelliptic ensemble with the group USp(2g). Further taking the limit of large genus g to infinity allows us to identify Gao's combinatorial factor with the RMT answer.

Statistics for products of traces of high powers of the frobenius class of hyperelliptic curves

We study the averages of products of traces of high powers of the Frobenius class of hyperelliptic curves of genus g over a fixed finite field. We show that for increasing genus g, the limiting expectation of these products equals to the expectation when the curve varies over the unitary symplectic group USp(2g). We also consider the scaling limit of linear statistics for eigenphases of the Frobenius class of hyperelliptic curves, and show that their first few moments are Gaussian.
